Meet Lucy - our dedicated Breast Care Nurse. Lucy says supporting patients and families through one of the most vulnerable times in their lives is a privilege she doesn't take lightly.

"My role combines clinical care with emotional support - helping patients understand their diagnosis, navigate treatment options, and feel truly seen and cared for every step of the way. I love my role because it allows me to connect deeply with people, offer comfort in moments of uncertainty and make a meaningful difference in their journey’."

'Check your breasts' was the resounding message at today's staff education session presented by Breast Surgeon Dr Susan Hawes.

It's Breast Cancer Awareness Month and we are raising awareness and funds for the cancer that takes nine lives a day in Australia.

Early detection is key, with 58 new cases diagnosed every day. The National Breast Cancer Foundation is working towards its vision of 'zero deaths from breast cancer' by funding research to understand how breast cancer originates, grows and spreads.

Our Orthopaedic Upper Limb Surgeon, Dr Andrew McBride was a standout at the Arthrex ANZ's Orthopaedic Technology & Innovation Forum (OTIF) in Sydney, showcasing a recorded shoulder surgery and leading a fireside chat with his patient, BMX Freestyle Champion Natalya Diehm, and New York ortho Dr Brad Parsons on treating elite athletes.

OTIF brought together almost 200 surgeons from across Australia and New Zealand for a two-day program focused on the latest advancements in shoulder surgery.

Dr McBride’s re-live surgery is now available on Orthopedia.com as a resource for healthcare professionals, supporting learning and knowledge-sharing across the orthopaedic community.

Breast health is more than screening, it is knowing your density.

Specialist Breast Surgeon Dr Maree Kekeff from Gold Coast Breast Centre says mammograming fatty breasts is like x-raying water - you can see everything, but mammograming dense breasts is like x-raying concrete.

“This creates a diagnostic dilemma,” says Dr Kekeff.

“Knowing your density will help with planning for future screening.”

For World Dense Breast Day, we are sharing the five facts to help you identify and manage dense breasts:

👩Breasts are made of fat and glands that make milk, held together by fibrous tissue. The more glands and fibrous tissue compared to fatty tissue that a woman has, the “denser” her breast tissue.

👩Many women have dense breasts. This is normal and common. In fact, nearly half of women over age 40 have dense breasts.

👩When radiologists look at mammograms, they can see how dense the breasts are.

👩Dense tissue appears white on a mammogram, and so does cancer. This makes it harder for radiologists to see cancer in dense breasts. Because cancer can be missed, it is often found when larger and at a later stage in women with dense breasts.

👩Dense breasts are also a risk factor for breast cancer. A woman’s risk for breast cancer increases with the level of density in her breasts.

Our wonderful Cancer Care Nurse Navigator Samantha Ormerod organised a Go Lime For Lymphoma morning tea and raffle, raising $692 to help fund vital support from Specialist Lymphoma Care Nurses.

Before joining Gold Coast Private, Sam worked for Lymphoma Australia and experienced first-hand the positive difference this support makes for sufferers.

"During my time as a Specialist Lymphoma Care Nurse, I had the privilege of walking alongside so many patients and families through some of their toughest moments. That experience shaped my way I care today. Now at Gold Coast Private, I carry those lessons with me - helping people feel supported, informed and never alone. This Lymphoma Awareness Month, I’m fundraising to help make sure no one must go through it alone-every dollar makes a difference," says Sam.

If you'd like to help Sam's fundraising efforts and support people suffering with lymphoma, you can donate at golime.lymphoma.org.au
