TRI4cure

TRI4cure Me and my sister's journey to raise awareness and funds for Rett Syndrome research in hope for ultimately finding a cure for this debilitating disorder.

Hi, my name is Kye. I am a triathlete in my 7th year of competing. My sister Pia was diagnosed of Rett Syndrome at the age of 2. She cannot walk, talk, eat nor do many other things that we able bodied people take for granted. She goes through a lot including epilectic seizures, broken bones from osteopenea, chest infections and pneumonia, to name a few and a simple cold can send her to hospital, a

t times for an extended period of time. But when she is well, she is the happiest smiley little girl full of personality and attitude;) And she always accompany me and support me at all of my races. The idea of racing with her came up to me a while ago, but in November 2014, we raced our first event together at the Noosa Tingirana Special Triathlon. During our journey, we have raised awareness for Rett Syndrome and over US$7,000 were donated by our generous supporters for the research in the name of our project "TRI4cure". We had another successful year in 2015, raising US$1,780 for Rett Syndrome Research Trust. Now that the triathlon season is over for the Team TRI4cure, we have more exciting plans ahead including our first 10km run together. We would like to keep going and keep fighting, in hope that one day there will be a cure found for this debilitating disorder! Thank you for your ongoing support and I hope you can follow Pia and I in our journey!

Merry Christmas from Team Pia.

I went through a lot of “firsts” without my Pia in the past 6 months; first night without her, first run without her, first birthday without her, and the list goes on… Every one of them was as hard as the other and I already know that it will never get less painful second time around and beyond.

Happy 21st Birthday to my Pia, my daughter, my world, my everything.
21 years ago today, I held you in my arms for the first time. In the short but long 21 years of your life, you taught me so much and gave me a reason. Today, I celebrate an amazing life you had, on what was meant to be your 21st birthday without you but with you in my heart. My life after you feels so empty and meaningless but together with your brother, we will have to go on, do life, until we can be together again.

I love you.
I miss you.

Thanks for those who enquired. The chair was picked up by a family who I’m sure will have a great use with it and keep running with a bit of Pia with them in their hearts💜

It’s been almost 5 month since I lost part of me. Kye and I are ok, as ok as we can be. Many of you called or messaged checking in on us and I am grateful for all the support we’ve received from family, friends and the community.

I am still running but still learning to run by myself which is quite different from running with Pia. I pushed her to the finish line but she pulled me more. She was the wind beneath my wings.
Running was the gift Pia gave me and I now would like to gift another Rett Angel with one of Pia’s running chairs. Is there any mum/dad/brother/sister/family/friends who runs and would like it? Or someone who’d like to take up running/walking Parkruns, fun runs etc? It is called Delta Run (link in comment) and of course it’s purple💜 Comes with race wheels and off-road wheels in a bag, in near new condition. If anyone is interested, I would like to offer the Rett Community first. Please comment or message me directly.

I will be pushing Pia for the last time on Saturday, 5 July at Gold Coast Marathon 5km fun run.
If anyone wants to join us, please nominate our group:

Team name: Team Pia
Team PiN: TeamPia (note, there is no space)

I’m hoping to run half marathon and Kye is in full next morning. This was our goal this year, to give her GCM Double. So we’ll be doing just that. Underprepared, but I know our Pia will push us over the finish line.

It was going to be her 18th GCM 5km.
It would be great if anyone can join in to celebrate Pia’s achievements in Gold Coast Marathon.
💜💜💜

One of Pia’s Rett sisters, Goldie shared a bit about Pia on her FB page. October is Rett Syndrome Awareness Month but we live Rett every day. Pia is fighting yet another battle at the hospital. She is a fighter. Sometimes I wonder if she’d ever tell me enough is enough.

As Pia is faced with another challenge at Gold Coast Hospital’s the emergency department, I’m looking back on our epic weekend at Gold Coast Marathon where we ticked off another box on our bucket list.

On Saturday, Pia and I ran our first half marathon and backed up with our usual 5km walk. Second half of 21km was tough. I had never run anything longer than 12km. People say it’s a flat course but when you are pushing the weight heavier than you, you feel every little incline. The support from the crowd, friends and strangers, was amazing! I got quite emotional hearing everyone cheer for us nearing the finishing chute.

I always think that running is like our journey, our life together. There is highs and lows, moments that almost break us down, but we keep going with support from the people around us, and the joy it brings to our lives!

Pia has come so far, she’s defied the odds and still keeps going. I run because I want her to hear all those cheers for her. “GO PIA!”
