Ever brushed off feeling emotional as being ‘just tired’, ‘hangry’, or ‘that time of the month’?

Hormones, hunger, pain, and fatigue can all amplify our emotions and make it harder to cope.

These are called biological vulnerabilities to emotion—and learning to spot them is the first step to managing them.

Opening up emotionally can feel uncomfortable, but it’s a skill you can build over time. Here are some simple ways to get started:

1. Start small – You don’t need to spill everything. Begin by sharing a little at a time.

2. Choose someone you trust – A supportive friend, family member, or therapist can make all the difference.

3. Pick the right moment – Try to talk when things are calm and you both have time to listen.

4. Use simple language – You don’t need to be poetic, just honest. Try phrases like “I’ve been feeling overwhelmed lately” or “I’m not sure how to explain it, but…”

5. Name the feeling – Even just saying “I’m sad,” “I’m frustrated,” or “I feel stuck” is a big step.

6. Practice – Like any skill, emotional expression gets easier the more you do it.

7. Be kind to yourself – It’s okay to feel awkward at first. You’re learning something powerful.

Talking about your feelings isn’t a sign of weakness, it’s a step toward healing and connection.

Your first session (often called an intake or initial session) is all about getting to know you. At SQPsych, we’ll help you feel comfortable as you share your story — and if you’re not sure where to start, we’ll gently guide you with questions. Together, we’ll explore what’s going on for you, your strengths, and what supports might help.

Are you thinking of starting therapy? If you’ve never seen a psychologist before, you may not know what to expect and could have mixed feelings about the process.

Psychologists are university-trained professionals in the field of mental health and help people by providing talk therapy. We will build a collaborative relationship with you to help identify and work on difficulties with your mental health. At SQPsych, we are aware that it can be overwhelming starting therapy, and we’ll strive to make you feel comfortable and connected. While we have knowledge and skills in the field of mental health, you are the expert in your own life and we will build a team relationship with you.

We welcome new clients and encourage you to reach out if you are interested in booking in with us or have any questions.

Not sure if therapy is right for you? You're not alone—and that’s exactly why we offer a free 15-minute intro call 💬

This isn’t a therapy session, and there’s no pressure to commit. It’s just a chance to:
✔️ Ask questions in a low-pressure setting
✔️ Get a feel for how the therapist communicates
✔️ See if it’s the right fit—before diving in
✔️ Understand what your first few sessions might look like

Starting therapy doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Sometimes, the first step is just a conversation.

Grounding is a technique that helps you stay present during moments of stress, anxiety, or emotional overwhelm.

By shifting focus to the “here and now,” it can reduce distress and bring a sense of calm and control.

It’s especially helpful for those experiencing panic, dissociation, or flashbacks, and is a useful tool for managing intense emotions.

How do you ground yourself?
