It is relentless being a first time mum but even more so in your 40’s.

For a start, age is creeping up on you by the time you reach 35.

This makes for a much tireder mum before the lack of sleep from your baby or toddler.

Your nervous system is struggling to cope with stress on top of the sleep deficit and age.

You don’t know it, but this is due less progesterone which helps us cope with stress.

My signature program 'Happy Mummy Program' was designed to help first time mums in their 40’s regain control of their health.

What happens when you see a herbalist? 🌿

Initially, an introductory call helps assess where you are at and whether I can help you, and also to see if we are a good fit to work together.

If you would like to go ahead, there are some forms to complete that cover medical history, social history to include demographics, questionnaires and consent forms.

At the initial consult which lasts up to 1 hour, we dive into your health condition - more questions are asked and I listen to your story - the more I know your story, the better I can help.

Next, I send a treatment plan that summarises the next few weeks and months ahead, and always includes dietary and lifestyle advice, as well as herbal treatment.

Herbal treatment comes in many forms - liquid extracts, herbal tea, herbal tablets and topical herbs.

There follows a few follow up consults, it really depends on how you are going, but we discuss your progress and tweak the herbal formula and treatment if needed.

If you choose to do a program, blood tests are included, and so is a nutrition health plan which has meal plans, shopping lists, discussion forums to keep you on track, and lots more!

Programs are usually more successful than going along with consults because they hold you more accountable and the investment includes blood tests.

As a natural therapist, I like to walk the walk, and talk the talk.

My diet is clean, but I do find it hard to stick to my 2.4 Litres per day some days.

I mostly get enough sleep but having had a child in my 40's has certainly left me feeling like I am in a permanent sleep deficit, although I'm making some progress now he's a bit older!

I've built in exercise this year - only taken me 30-odd years but it's really never too late to do any of this!

Next, I'll incorporate a small breathing exercise or meditation into my day. Even a walk in nature or the sunlight will suffice.

All five need to be done as they are all inter-connected.

For more, you can read about the five pillars on my blog, link in bio. or copy paste: https://bluemountainsherbalist.com.au/five-pillars-of-health/

If you have hot flushes that you were managing with herbs or other things that have stopped working, try taking vitamin E and omega oils.

The important bit to note is that the vitamin E needs to contain all 8 sub- forms of vitamin E, which is the alpha, beta, delta and gamma tocopherols, and tocotrienols. It might be that you have to take 2 supplements if you can't find one that has all of them.

I've been taking Annatto E by for the beta, delta and gamma, because I've been also taking C-Max by which has the alpha form.

Omega Ease are great.

A woman's body takes approximately 12 years to transition from pre- to post menopause. The hormones will fluctuate so much over the years so you have to keep changing what you do to ease the symptoms.

Incidentally, it takes a teenager 12 years from start to finish to have her cycles and reproductive system established - but they are so often put onto the pill to "regulate" things but in actual fact that completely pauses the development of her whole reproductive system - and we wonder why there's such fertility problems when they hit 30 and want to fall pregnant! but that's a story for another day!

If you could change your health by clicking your fingers,
what would you change?

I've created a group for all those first time mums in their 40's, if that's you or someone you know...

I understand first hand how hard it is having a baby later in life.
But it's not just about getting over the birth of your baby, dealing with a newborn, and them becoming a toddler.

Being in your 40's means you're also on the cusp of perimenopause, which brings its own challenges to an already fatigued body and mind, and one who hasn't realised it is the start of perimenopause.

The combination of these major life events has incredible effects on a woman's physical health and mental wellbeing. The demands are a lot to deal with when there's a baby and/or young child who in themselves are susceptible to emotional meltdowns.

This group is a supportive place to share and discuss - tips, knowledge, experiences, vent your frustrations, seek advice and recommendations, and connect with other first time mums in their 40's who are going through the same, so you're not alone, and more importantly so that you can be the parent you want to be for your children and families.

This time 10 years ago, I graduated as a herbalist!

It has been such a privilege to work with so many people and be a part of their health journeys, all across the world, from North America, UK, Australia and beyond.

Every time a client's health improves using herbs or food as medicine, it is such an awesome feeling, to know they've overcome their health struggles and reached their goals using natural medicine.

Incidentally, it's Natural Medicine Week, organised by my wonderful association, The Australian Traditional Medicine Society.

They have a shedload of free online events that will no doubt be incredibly informative, and you can access them here, anywhere - if you can't make the time, it will be recorded to access later on:

A couple of months ago, I posted my personal goal to be fit at 50.

This is after a rather sedentary life, which is considered as bad as smoking for cardiovascular health and chronic disease!

So far, I'm on track - I've worked my way up to two 50-minute swims a week, after having started 2 months ago, getting completely out of breath after just 15 minutes!

If you're in your 40's, it's not too late to make changes, I am living proof of this!

Remember: What you do now is going to make a difference to your quality of life in the next 10 years!

Exercise should be like breathing - something we do every day as a matter of course.

Check out my blog about the five pillars of health, one of which is exercise!
