“What do Aboriginal people in the Northern Territory value during the operation journey?”
An article exploring this important question has just been published in the Medical Journal of Australia, appearing in a NAIDOC Week special issue. The author list includes ANZCA President Dave Story and ANZCA fellow Dr Edith Waugh, who received an ANZCA Health Equity Grant in 2022 that helped facilitate this research. The article explores what a culturally safe perioperative journey looks like for Aboriginal people in the Northern Territory, highlighting the key priorities of respect for family involvement, cultural practices, and connection to Country, as well as culturally competent communication. NAIDOC Week celebrations have kicked off! This is a week to recognise and celebrate the history, culture and achievements of First Nations peoples. This year's theme is "The Next Generation: Strength, Vision and Legacy." As NAIDOC Week marks its 50th year, this is a time to look back and reflect on the past, but also to look ahead to the future, as the theme captures. The college encourages all fellows, trainees, and SIMGs to check out the official NAIDOC site to find out how you can get involved – whether that be through local, community-based events and activities, or by learning more about First Nations cultures and histories. https://www.naidoc.org.au/

We’re excited to announce that ANZCA and Geoffrey Kaye Museum will be opening our doors to the public on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 July 2025 as part of Open House Melbourne.

This event will appeal to both Victorian architecture lovers and contemporary architecture enthusiasts. The site encompasses two buildings that, architecturally, are very distinct: Ulimaroa, a historic 19th-century mansion, and ANZCA House, a newer addition to the site.

Visitors can participate in first-come, first-served guided tours on both days. The tours will be run by ANZCA staff, including museum curator Veronica Dominiak and honorary curator Dr Christine Ball.

On Sunday, visitors can also join Dr Norman Day, architect, educator and writer, for a panel discussion with Dr Kirsten Day, registered architect, senior lecturer and educator from the University of Melbourne.

The program includes both open access and pre-booked components. Where bookings are required, a $7 booking fee applies.

Our Story

ANZCA is one of Australasia's largest specialist medical colleges, and responsible for the training, examination and specialist accreditation of anaesthetists and pain medicine specialists and for the standards of clinical practice in Australia and New Zealand. The College also plays a significant role in the advancement of anaesthesia in south-east Asia and South Pacific island countries. ANZCA, which includes the Faculty of Pain Medicine, was formed in February 1992 after 40 years operating as a Faculty of Anaesthetists within the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. Its function is to cultivate and maintain the highest principles and standards in the training, practice and ethics of anaesthesia, perioperative medicine and pain medicine. To assist the ANZCA Council in achieving its objectives, the College engages professional and administrative staff located at ANZCA House, in the New Zealand national office, and in state and territory regional offices. The Faculty of Pain Medicine assists the ANZCA Council to achieve these objectives in the area of pain medicine.
