Let’s talk about the myth that TMS uses magnets and doesn’t involve any electrical currents or signals.

❌ The myth: TMS does not involve any electrical currents because it only uses magnets.

✅ The truth: All methods of brain stimulation involve electrical currents in some way. TMS simply induces the electrical current within the brain’s neurons non-invasively via electromagnetism.

The TMS coil does not actually contain static magnets but in fact contains loops of copper wiring. When the TMS machine sends a brief electrical current through this copper wire, it produces a powerful, rapidly changing magnetic field. 🧲 This happens because, according to the laws of physics (Faraday’s Law of Induction), an electric current flowing through a conductor (like copper) generates a magnetic field around it.

When the TMS coil is placed against the patient’s head, the magnetic field passes through the head and induces targeted electrical currents in the neurons located beneath the coil. 🧠 The currents can change the excitability of the cells, and over repeated sessions can induce what is known as ‘neuroplasticity’, helping to treat symptoms of various mental health conditions.
