✨Our birth story ✨
On Wednesday, March 19th, I welcomed my daughter Gia into the world.
She had been eager to join us, teasing me with false alarms before finally deciding the time was right.
Having been through this before, I had hoped for a home birth, but my previous experience with my first son, led to the hospital rejecting the option. I chose to let go of my resistance and embraced whatever would come.
Thankfully, I was connected to an incredible midwife through the hospital’s caseload program, who shared my values around pregnancy and how I wanted to birth.
That day began like any other day, I visited an aunty after school drop off, I went to my 38 week appointment and we joked that if she decided to come today, that she needs to come after 8pm, because I didn’t want to be stuck in traffic.
The midwife laughed because she said it was a trend that most of her caseload would go into labour on her appointment days, but I wasnt so sure because of the false starters I experienced.
Little did I know, the signs of early labor began around 3 PM, but I wasn’t convinced yet.
After picking up the kids, I felt a wave of contractions that felt more like pelvic thunder, so I decided to take a shower to relax.
Just before dinner, I noticed that the contractions were increasing ever so slightly and I couldn’t eat all my food.
I knew then, that this could be it and we went for a walk with the kids to help things along.
Back home, I suddenly felt the urge to clean, vacuuming and doing the laundry until real contractions kicked in.
Lucas started timing them, and we knew it was time to call my brother-in-law and sister-in-law. I let the midwife know, so she could prepare for the water birth.
Throughout this time, my breath was my pain medicine and I had it in my control.
Allowing the waves to circulate through my body, my deep breathing eased the intensity.
We left for hospital at 8:30pm & when we arrived at the birthing suite, I remember getting in the water and looking up at the clock and it being 9:08 and became laser focused on her exit.
With each wave, I adapted my breath to what my body needed. As Gia crowned, the intensity ramped up. I pushed, and to my surprise, she emerged still encased in her amniotic sac—a little water balloon helmet on her head! As her shoulders emerged, the sac burst & I guided her out of the water to my chest, and I met my daughter’s gaze, her eyes wide open. We shared a moment of relief, and she gave me a grin.
I looked at Lucas and we both had tears in our eyes and amazed at what we all experienced.
It was 9:58 PM—my fastest birth yet, and one filled with presence for both Lucas and me.
Gia, our last gift.
Another divine angel, made perfect, completing our little family 🙏✨
