Every recommendation in this guide supports the exact building blocks babies need for rolling — and the best part? These items can be repurposed in so many ways as your baby grows.

💫 The key skills babies need for rolling:

Tummy → Back Rolling

Think…
• Weight shift side-to-side with elbows under shoulders
• Tracking toys and turning the head to follow movement
• Reaching forward for toys
• Building head strength to lift and maintain extension
• Keeping the shoulders tucked and stable

These skills help babies push through the floor, shift their centre of mass, and use momentum in a safe and functional way.

Back → Tummy Rolling

Think…
• Reaching across the body to initiate rotation
• Tracking toys up to a 45° angle to encourage head and trunk movement
• Using core muscles to begin the turn
• Leg kicking to create momentum
• Hands to midline to activate the deep core and prepare the roll

All of my recommended tools support these exact foundations — visual engagement, reaching, weight shift, head control, midline awareness, and core activation.

✨ I’ve seen the trend… so it’s time to add my pieces in.
These are the things I’d tell you as a paediatric physio if I wasn’t scared of hurting your feelings — lovingly, honestly, and with your baby’s development in mind. 💛

Before you read on, a little note from me:
This isn’t about shame.
This isn’t about guilt.
This is about empowerment.

My goal is always to help you feel informed, confident, and supported in understanding your baby’s body and development. Everything I share comes from my physio perspective — years of watching babies learn, move, grow, and absolutely thrive when the right information reaches the right parents. ✨

Take what resonates, save what you need, and know that you’re doing an incredible job. 🤍

If you have questions about your bub’s milestones, head shape, rolling, crawling, tone, or tension — my DMs are always open.

These are the carrying positions to follow if you want your reflux bub to finally experience some relief. 👇✨

As a paediatric physiotherapist, I help babies with tension, discomfort, and reflux every single day. When a baby is uncomfortable in their body, they show you through wriggling, arching, fussing, and resisting movement. The right positions can make a HUGE difference in helping their little system feel regulated, supported, and soothed.

If your bub is dealing with reflux, here are the positions that truly help:

1️⃣ Tummy carry… with a twist
The classic tummy-down carry is amazing for trunk strength and tummy time prep.
BUT — for a refluxy bub, lying directly on their tummy can increase abdominal pressure.
✅ Try turning them gently onto their side instead.
This stretches their trunk, opens their body, and gives a more inclined, relieving position.

2️⃣ Upright carry with legs tucked… sometimes too squishy
I LOVE this position for helping babies come into midline and melt their tension.
But after a feed, it can compress their tummy.
✅ Instead, hold them upright and slightly stretched over their left side (your right shoulder).
This supports digestion and eases reflux while still keeping them calm and contained.

3️⃣ Avoid tummy time immediately after feeding
Going face-down on the floor too soon puts direct pressure across the tummy.
✅ Wait at least 30 minutes before tummy time to reduce discomfort and reflux irritation.

⏰ Timing really is everything — keeping baby upright for 30 minutes after a feed helps their system digest more efficiently and can significantly reduce reflux episodes.

Mamas, you deserve to feel confident and supported — and your bub deserves comfort. If you want them to feel happier and more relaxed in their little body, these positions are your go-to.

✨ Save this so you can remember exactly what to do after every feed.

So I said to avoid containers… Now it is time to give you ideas on simple setups that allow your baby to move with purpose. ✨

It’s not about never using containers — it’s about balance. Short bursts are okay, but your baby needs plenty of free floor play to move, strengthen, and explore naturally.

✨ Here are some of my favourite (mostly) container-free alternatives that still keep your baby safe, supported, and learning through movement. Remember to always supervise your baby.

🧺 Laundry baskets – great for supported sitting, reaching, and balance practice.
📦 Nappy boxes – perfect for kneeling and early pulling-to-stand play. You can also create a mini makeshift sitter by cutting leg holes into the box for baby to practice short bursts of supported sitting.
🪑 Ottomans or low chairs – ideal for standing, cruising, and developing balance.
🤱 Babywearing – helps with head control, symmetry, and connection (and that “M” position supports healthy hips!).
🎀 Baby gyms – encourage purposeful movements like kicking, reaching, and rolling.
🧸 Playpens – a safe space for movement and exploration when you need your hands free.
🪶 The Upseat – if your baby needs to sit up, this provides better postural support than most other seats.

Remember: variety is key. Containers in moderation won’t harm your baby — but mixing in floor time, freedom, and purposeful play helps them develop strength, coordination, and confidence.

My goal is to help your baby move with ease, balance, and purpose.

✨ If you’re after the real truth about baby gear… let’s talk about the items I often recommend families avoid.

I know it’s not always easy to hear (and I don’t share this to cause guilt — I promise it’s for good reason!). But some of the most common “must-have” baby products don’t actually help your baby’s development… in fact, they can sometimes make things harder.

Here’s why 👇
🚫 Baby walkers – safety risks + no benefit for hip symmetry or walking strength.
🚫 Bumbo seats – restrict movement + put hips and trunk in poor alignment.
🚫 Jumpers/Exersaucers – don’t strengthen legs, encourage tiptoe standing + stress hips.
🚫 Baby swings – limit movement + can contribute to flat spots on the head.

✔️ While short bursts (10–15 mins) are fine if you already own them, skipping these saves money and gives your baby more chances to explore purposeful movement on the floor.

The best tool? 👉 A safe space on the floor and your interaction ✨
