In the early weeks, many parents worry their baby is feeding too often. The truth is that frequent feeding is not only normal, it is expected.

Newborn tummies are tiny and digest milk quickly, so shorter, more regular feeds help support growth, hydration, and comfort. This pattern also helps establish your milk supply by giving your body the cue to make more milk over time.

Cluster feeding, especially in the evening, is a common newborn behaviour and not a sign of low supply. Understanding what is normal can make the early days feel more manageable and less overwhelming.

If you are ever unsure about your baby’s feeding pattern, you are always welcome to reach out for support.

A feeding assessment is never just about watching a baby latch. It’s about understanding the full picture.

I look at positioning and alignment first. Is your baby supported? Are you comfortable? Then I observe latch depth, lip position, jaw movement, and swallowing patterns. I assess how effectively milk is transferring, not just how it looks from the outside.

I also pay close attention to your experience. Is there pain? Tension? Anxiety? Feeding should feel sustainable, not something you endure.

We consider your baby’s weight trends, nappy output, behaviour between feeds, and any medical or birth factors that might influence feeding.

Most importantly, I explain what I’m seeing and why it matters. You leave understanding what’s happening and what to do next.

Many parents are unsure what actually happens during a lactation consult.

The truth is that it is warm, collaborative, and centred on your goals. During a session, we look at feeding positions, latch, your baby’s behaviour, and any concerns you may have. We slow everything down so you can ask questions without pressure.

We work together to understand your baby’s cues and find strategies that feel realistic and gentle for your family.

After the consult, you receive clear notes and a plan tailored to your situation. Support does not end once the session finishes. You are welcome to check in or book a follow-up if things change.

Skin-to-skin is one of the simplest and most powerful ways to support your baby.

It helps regulate their temperature, heart rate, and breathing, and can even support feeding by activating newborn reflexes. Many parents think skin-to-skin is only for the first hours after birth, but it is helpful at any stage in the early weeks. It can calm fussiness, improve bonding, support milk supply, and make feeds feel easier.

There is no right or wrong amount. Even a few minutes can make a difference.

Whether feeding has been smooth or challenging, skin-to-skin is a gentle tool you can come back to anytime. If you would like help using skin-to-skin during feeds or settling, support is always available.

Experience does not replace support.

Even parents who have fed multiple babies can feel unsure, overwhelmed, or unheard. What makes the difference is being met with care that listens, explains, and adapts to you and your baby.

Jessica’s story is a powerful reminder that the right support can completely change a feeding journey, not just once, but again and again.

If you’re navigating breastfeeding challenges or simply want guidance that feels calm, personalised, and evidence-based, applications for our Beta Program are now open.

Support should never feel rushed or generic. It should feel like this.

When returning to work, many parents worry about how much milk their baby will need while they are away.

The truth is that babies do not always take large volumes during the day. They often make up for connection and feeding when you return home. A helpful guideline is twenty five to thirty millilitres per hour you are apart, but every baby is different. Some take more.

Some take less. Some prefer more evening feeds instead. Your milk supply will adjust to your new routine slowly and gently. Understanding what is typical can help you feel more relaxed and confident during the transition.

If you would like help estimating volumes for your baby or planning ahead for childcare, support is always available.

Working with Lactology is designed to feel calm, supportive, and clear from the very beginning. Here’s how it works.

First, you choose the type of support you need, whether it’s prenatal guidance, help in the early days, or a deeper look at feeding challenges. Once you book, we send a short intake form so we can understand your goals and tailor our time together.

During your consult, we move at your pace. We talk through what’s happening, explore what your baby is telling us through their behaviour, and create a plan that feels realistic and gentle for your family.

Afterward, you receive follow-up notes and ongoing support options if you’d like us by your side as things change.

If you’re ready to feel more confident, supported, and informed, you’re always welcome to reach out.

The first week with a newborn is a big adjustment for everyone. If things feel a little chaotic, you’re not alone. Here’s what’s completely normal in those early days:
🤎 Cluster feeding in the evening.
🤎 Frequent waking.
🤎 Short naps.
🤎 Lots of snuggles.
🤎 Plenty of trial and error.

Newborns communicate through behaviour and their patterns shift as they settle into life outside the womb. When you know what to expect, the early weeks feel a little more manageable and a lot less stressful.

If you’d like support with feeding or understanding your baby’s cues, you’re always welcome to reach out.

Finding a comfortable breastfeeding position can make the early days feel calmer and more supported for both you and your baby. There’s no single “right” way to feed, only what feels good for your body and helps your baby stay close, secure, and well-attached.

From cradle and cross-cradle to laid-back, football, side-lying, and upright feeding, each position has its own benefits. Some offer more control for newborns, some help reduce ni**le discomfort, and others support rest and recovery after birth.

Exploring different options can help you understand what works best for you, especially as your baby grows and their feeding patterns change.

If you ever feel unsure about positioning or latch, you are not alone. Support is always available and small adjustments can make a big difference. If you’d like personalised guidance, you’re welcome to reach out anytime.

A deep, comfortable latch can make feeding feel easier for both you and your baby.

It is not about getting it perfect. It is about recognising the signs that your baby has enough breast tissue in their mouth to drink effectively. Look for a wide-open mouth, chin close to the breast, lips flanged outward, and more of the lower ar**la showing than the top. You may hear soft swallowing once they settle into a rhythm.

If you feel pinching or sharp pain, it is a sign to gently adjust positioning or try again. With time and support, deep latch cues become easier to spot. If latch has been uncomfortable or confusing, you are always welcome to reach out for guidance that meets you where you are.
