🚑 MOB — BEEN TO ED LATELY?
We hope you’re keepin’ well, but if you’ve had to visit the Emergency Department and wondered why some people get seen quicker than others… here’s the yarn. 🙌🏾
Our EDs are flat-out busy places, and to keep everyone safe, a triage nurse checks you first and puts you into a category based on how serious your condition is.
Here’s how the categories work:
🔥 Category 1 – life‑threatening (seen straight away)
⚡ Category 2 – very urgent
⏳ Category 3 – urgent
🟡 Category 4 – semi‑urgent
🟢 Category 5 – non‑urgent
So if you’re waiting longer than someone who walked in after you, it’s not because you’ve been forgotten — it’s because someone else may be in a more serious way. Our staff are doing their best to see everyone as quickly and safely as possible. ❤️‍🩹
The good news?
👉🏾 If your condition is serious, you’ll be seen immediately.
Not sure if it’s an emergency?
📞 Call 13 HEALTH (13 43 25 84) for advice.
🚑 In an emergency, call 000 and ask for an ambulance.
Look after yourselves and each other, mob. 💛🖤❤️

🌾 Mob, let’s yarn about smart shopping!
Shop Wise. Eat Well. Save More. 🛒🍉💰

Eating healthy doesn’t need to cost a fortune — our old people have always known how to make good food go far. Here are a few deadly tips to help you keep the fridge full *and* save your money:

📝 Plan before you shop
A quick weekly meal plan + a shopping list = less waste, fewer impulse buys, and more coin in your pocket.

🌾 Stick to budget-friendly staples
Lentils, beans, oats, brown rice, eggs, frozen veggies — cheap, filling, and good for the whole family.

🌽 Choose frozen or in-season veggies
Frozen fruit & veg are just as healthy (sometimes even fresher!) and usually heaps cheaper too.

🏪 Check out low-cost local food stores
Places like GateWay Care Caloundra and The Everyday Foundation Nambour offer affordable wholefoods + pantry items.

🍳 Cook BIG for the week*
Make a big pot of something hearty and portion it out. Future you is gonna be grateful!

💡 Healthy doesn’t have to be fancy
Simple meals with whole ingredients go a long way. Your body — and your budget — will feel the difference.

🔥 MEET BROHDIE — OUR HEART-DRIVEN HLO 🔥

He's a Bundjalung man with South Sea Islander connections and an Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Hospital Liaison Officer.

From Logan to Wynnum, raised in the heart of community and culture, Brohdie has always walked with mob and now he walks beside our patients and families right here in hospital.

“I see my role as bridging the gap between our mob and the clinical teams so our people feel heard, supported, and safe.

🌱 PURPOSE ROOTED IN COMMUNITY

Growing up, Brohdie watched his mum take their family to Aboriginal Medical Services — a place where cultural care was the norm. Now he’s come full circle: supporting mob in hospital, advocating for better outcomes, and showing what culturally strong care looks like.

🎓 A PROUD JOURNEY (and still going!)

Behind the scenes, Brohdie has been:
📘 7 years working as an HLO
🏋🏽‍♀️ Completed a Cert III/IV in Fitness in 2021 (yep, during COVID!)
🎓 Bachelor of Medical Science (Nutrition) in 2024
📚 Now in his Master of Dietetics (Sports Nutrition), graduating 2027!

Soon you'll see him donning the Student Dietitian uniform across the health service.

🤎 WHAT HE LOVES

🍽 Cooking for his loved ones
🍷 A cheeky vino
🎶 60s/70s soul & funk + kitchen dance breaks
🤣 Known across the service as: “THE LOUDEST LAUGH”
☕️ Dirty chai on soy

✊🏾 FOR THE COMMUNITY, ALWAYS

“I hope mob feel my role with trust, respect and the knowing that real, genuine support is here when things get tough.”

Our HLO team walk with lived experience — of community, of hardship, of not always being heard.
And that’s why they show up so strongly for our patients.

You’re not alone.
You’re seen.
And we walk this path with you.

🔥 Mob, let’s talk sleep and sneaky nightcaps 🔥
A couple of cheeky bevvies before bed might feel like they help you crash out… but really, they’re just mugging your good-quality sleep. 😒
Yeah, the sedative hit from a drink can knock you out quick — tempting, I know, Newbie — but that grog kicks your sleep cycles out of whack. Especially your precious REM sleep (the good stuff your brain needs).
And then what?
You’re waking up all night with the sweats, weird dreams, and running to the loo because alcohol makes you p*e more. By morning you’re tired, cranky, sluggish… and over it. 😴
Regular poor sleep + drinking can:
👉 mess with your heart and blood pressure
👉 slow your metabolism (yep… weight gain)
👉 weaken your immune system
👉 ramp up depression + anxiety
👉 make snoring, sleep apnoea or restless legs way worse
So Ace — for deadly sleep and better health — cutting down or quitting the grog is the real MVP move.
If you’re still having a drink, try giving your body a break and avoid alcohol for 3–4 hours before bed. Makes a world of difference.
Sleep high five! ✋
Take care of yourselves, Mob. You’re worth it. 💛🖤❤️
