SOCIAL SKILLS TRAINING PROGRAM FOR CHILDREN (5–12)
Intervention Pathway & Progress Monitoring at Viangelic

At Viangelic, children’s progress in the Social Skills Training Program for Children (5–12) is guided through a clear intervention pathway and ongoing professional monitoring. Development is intentional, measurable, and tailored to each child’s individual needs.

Before entering the program, each child completes an individual intake assessment to understand their current social, emotional, and communication skills. From this, personalised goals are developed in collaboration with families and aligned with developmental and NDIS goals where applicable.

The program follows a stage-based intervention pathway, supporting children as they move from foundational social skills to more complex interaction, cooperation, and relationship-building skills. Teaching strategies, task demands, and levels of support are adapted flexibly to suit each child’s learning pace.

Progress is continuously observed and monitored by therapists and trained facilitators during every session. Intervention strategies are adjusted in response to each child’s progress, strengths, and emerging needs.

Families receive ongoing feedback and practical strategies to support skill generalisation at home, school, and in the community.

At Viangelic, progress is viewed as a developmental journey rather than a checklist. Through structured intervention, professional monitoring, and individualised support, the program empowers children to build lasting social skills with confidence and purpose.

WHAT HAPPENS INSIDE A SOCIAL SKILLS TRAINING SESSION?

At Viangelic, each session in the Social Skills Training Program for Children (5–12) is built on a structured therapeutic framework, while remaining flexible and individualised to meet each child’s unique needs.

Children may be working on the same skill, but the level of support, expectations, and goals are tailored to their developmental profile.

A typical session includes:

1️⃣ Emotional Check-In & Readiness Support
Therapists observe each child’s emotional state and readiness to participate, adjusting support accordingly.
Example:
– A child who feels anxious may start with a calm activity beside the therapist.
– A child familiar with the group may be encouraged to initiate greetings with peers.

2️⃣ Direct Teaching of a Target Social Skill
Each session focuses on one clearly defined social skill, selected based on real-life challenges observed in the child or group.
Example:
– For children who do not yet greet others, the focus may be eye contact and saying “hello.”
– For children who already greet, the goal may be using greetings appropriately in different contexts.

3️⃣ Modelling, Role-Play & Individualised Prompting
Children observe demonstrations, practise through role-play, and receive support matched to their ability level.
Example:
– A child needing more support may receive step-by-step prompts or physical modelling.
– A more independent child may practise with minimal verbal cues.

4️⃣ Group Activities to Apply Skills in Real Interaction
Structured group games allow children to apply newly learned skills in authentic social situations.
Example:
– A child struggling with turn-taking may use visual cues or gestures.
– A child who tends to withdraw may be given a simple, supportive role within the group.

5️⃣ Emotional Regulation Strategies
Children learn age-appropriate strategies to recognise and manage their emotions during interaction.
Example:
– A child who becomes overwhelmed may practise asking for a break or using breathing techniques.
– A child who reacts impulsively may practise using words instead of actions.

6️⃣ Positive Feedback & Individualised Reinforcement
Therapists provide specific, meaningful feedback so children understand what they did well.
Example:
“You waited for your turn and stayed engaged — that’s an important social skill.”

Through this approach, children are not expected to fit into a single model. Instead, social skills are taught, practised, and reinforced at each child’s own developmental pace, within a safe, supportive, and professionally guided environment.

WHO IS THE SOCIAL SKILLS TRAINING PROGRAM FOR?

Every child develops social skills at their own pace. Some children benefit from additional guidance and a supportive environment to learn how to communicate, participate in group activities, and build meaningful peer connections.

The Social Skills Training Program for Children (5–12) is designed for children aged 5–12 who experience challenges in everyday social situations, such as:

💜 Difficulty initiating or maintaining interactions with peers
💜 Challenges with turn-taking, sharing, or following game rules
💜 Feeling overwhelmed or anxious in group settings
💜 Difficulty understanding emotions and social responses

The program is suitable for children with ASD, ADHD, developmental delay, intellectual disability, or social communication and interaction difficulties.

At Viangelic, the program does not focus on labels or diagnoses. Instead, it is centred on each child’s individual developmental needs, supporting them to gradually learn, practise, and apply social skills in a safe, structured, and professionally supported environment.

HOW IS SOCIAL SKILLS TRAINING DIFFERENT FROM "TEAM PLAY"?

A common misconception is that children's social skills will develop naturally simply by participating in group play. However, for children with special needs, social skills do not develop naturally without structured guidance and appropriate professional support.

Social Skills Training is a systematic intervention method in which social skills are:
- Clearly defined according to specific goals
- Directly taught using language and forms appropriate to the child's abilities
- Illustrated through modeling, role-playing, and guided practice
- Repeated and reinforced to help children remember and apply effectively.

At Viangelic, within the framework of the Social Skills Training Program for Children (5–12), each social skill is not just introduced, but is implemented systematically through clear explanations, diverse practice, and close links to real-life situations at school and at home.

This approach helps transform social skills from knowledge learned during the intervention into sustainable practical abilities, supporting children to better integrate into daily life.

WHY SOCIAL SKILLS ARE A FOUNDATION FOR CHILD DEVELOPMENT

Social Skills Training Program for Children (5–12)

Social skills play a vital role in a child’s overall development. Beyond the ability to “play with others,” they form the foundation for effective communication, emotional regulation, teamwork, and long-term participation in school and community life.

Many children with additional needs experience challenges in:
- Understanding and responding to social cues
- Expressing needs and emotions appropriately
- Regulating emotions during group interactions

Without appropriate support, these challenges may lead to:
- Social withdrawal and avoidance
- Emotional outbursts or over-dependence on adults
- Difficulties participating in classroom and community settings

At Viangelic, the Social Skills Training Program for Children (5–12) is designed as an early, structured, and evidence-based intervention to support children in developing essential social skills within a safe and professionally supported environment.

Through the program, children are supported to:
- Strengthen social communication and interaction skills
- Improve emotional regulation and behavioural awareness
- Build confidence and positive peer relationships
- Develop readiness for school and broader community participation

At Viangelic, we believe that when social skills are nurtured with the right guidance and support, children are empowered to connect, learn, and thrive over the long term.

THE ROLE OF THE PROVIDER DIRECTLY AFFECTS THE OUTCOME OF THE NDIS PLAN

In the NDIS system, the provider is not just a service provider. In fact, how the provider works can directly impact how participants are perceived and how funding is maintained through review periods.

Providers also play a crucial role in guiding intervention goals, ensuring that therapeutic activities are closely aligned with plan objectives and demonstrate progress. This directly affects the outcome of the plan review and the likelihood of funding renewal.

At Viangelic, intervention programs focus not only on therapeutic expertise but are also built upon a deep understanding of the NDIS evaluation framework. The goal is to help participants use their budget effectively, meet their needs, and sustainably maintain support, rather than focusing solely on short-term budget targets.

Choosing the right provider isn't just about choosing a treatment center; it's about choosing a long-term partner on your NDIS journey.

NOT ALL “POPULAR” THERAPY IS RECOMMENDED BY NDIS

NDIS does not review funding based on the spread of the therapy or positive perceived experiences. The focus of the evaluation is on whether the intervention produces clear, measurable functional changes that are directly related to participant participation.

Below are four real-world examples illustrating the difference between descriptions that don't meet NDIS criteria and descriptions that fit the logic of the review process.

Example 1: Speech Therapy
❌ “Participant with speech delay, following a speech support method that has received positive reviews from many parents.”

→ Not achieved because:
- Only states the diagnosis
- Does not describe the impact on daily life
- Does not link to functional goals

✅ “Participants experience severe limitations in expressive communication, unable to express basic needs (eating, pain, danger), leading to explosive behavior and reduced social interaction. Speech therapy aims to improve functional communication to increase safety and participation.”

→ Appropriate because:
- Clearly states the functional impact
- Linked to safety & social participation

Example 2: Sensory-based intervention
❌ “Therapies help participants relax, feel more comfortable, and reduce stress.”

→ Easily rejected because:
- Not a functional goal according to the NDIS framework
- More wellbeing-oriented than capacity-building

✅ “Occupational therapy focuses on adjusting sensory processing to reduce avoidant behavior, improve the ability to sit still for 15–20 minutes and participate in group activities in a learning environment.”

→ Considered because:
- Directly linked to education participation
- Has clear progress indicators

Example 3: Motor Intervention
❌ “Participant has weak muscles and is undergoing physiotherapy to improve strength.”

→ Insufficient evidence because:
- “Becoming stronger” is not a functional outcome
- Does not demonstrate an impact on daily activities

✅ “Physiotherapy focuses on improving balance and endurance to reduce the risk of falls, support safe movement indoors and participation in community activities.”

→ Suitable because:
- Related to mobility & safety
- Directly impacts independence

Example 4: Behavioral Therapy
❌ “Therapy helps participants become more obedient and compliant.”

→ Not met because:
- Subjective
- Not within the functional language of NDIS

✅ “Behaviour support focuses on reducing behaviors that endanger oneself and others, increasing the ability to follow basic instructions in daily life and the community environment.”

→ Meets the criteria because:
- Emphasizes risk reduction
- Related to daily living & community participation
- NDIS does not ask whether the therapy is “popular” or “well-regarded.”

NDIS assesses whether the intervention is reasonably necessary to improve the participant's living function and participation.

Therefore, choosing the right therapy alone is not enough. The ability to express ideas using functional language and evidence-based reasoning is what ultimately determines funding.

HOW DOES THE LANGUAGE IN NDIS REPORTS AFFECT FUNDING?

NDIS funding is not based on medical diagnoses, but rather on the impact on daily living functions. Therefore, functional language is a key element in the report.

Descriptions like "delayed speech" or "muscle weakness" only reflect the condition, but don't show the difficulties participants face in communication, safety, daily activities, and community participation. Conversely, when the report clearly shows functional limitations and their actual impact on life, the need for support will be perceived as essential.

At Viangelic, NDIS reports always focus on accurately describing living functions and the consequences of lack of support, ensuring participants' needs are clearly and realistically reflected.

🔍 5 THINGS YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT NDIS

NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) is a funding mechanism designed to support people with disabilities in achieving greater independence, social participation, and quality of life. However, during implementation, many core aspects of NDIS are often not fully explained to participants.

1️⃣ NDIS is goal-based funding, not based on subjective needs.

All support under an NDIS plan must be directly linked to approved short-term and long-term goals. If goals are not clearly defined, measurable, and clinically/socially sound, funding is easily restricted or rejected.

2️⃣ The “Reasonable & Necessary” criteria are the foundation for support approval.

NDIS only approves support that simultaneously meets the following criteria:

- It is directly related to the disability.
- It has evidence of improved functional capacity.
- It provides long-term value and does not replace the responsibilities of the health, education, or family systems.

3️⃣ NDIS plans can be adjusted throughout their lifespan and are not fixed.

Participants have the right to request a Plan Review or Change of Circumstances when:

- Support needs change.
- The level of functional decline or improvement is significant.
- Current support is no longer appropriate or effective.

4️⃣ Choice & Control allows for the selection and change of providers.

NDIS participants have full discretion to choose a provider that best suits their individual professional and cultural needs. Changing providers is a legal right and does not negatively impact the approved plan.

5️⃣ Implementing the plan requires effective support coordination.

- An NDIS plan is only valuable when it has:
- A suitable implementation strategy
- Multidisciplinary coordination (Allied Health, Behavior Support, Community Access, etc.)
- Continuous monitoring, evaluation, and adjustment
