So many messages from our last post about tantrums and meltdowns! If you’re struggling with this, know that you’re not alone. Reaching out to an OT or psychologist for support is the best thing you can do 🤍

Screen shot this cheat sheet to help differentiate between tantrum and meltdown next time your little one is upset.

Remember, a tantrum is goal directed. They want something, and often don't have the cognitive skills yet to see that it might be unreasonable (hello, ice cream for breakfast). The behaviour stops once their goal is achieved (ie. getting the ice cream)

A meltdown is due to sensory or emotional overload (like after a birthday party). The behaviour doesn’t stop, no matter what you do. Reduce demands and overwhelming sensory input, allow rest and regulation 🤍💛

We've been rather quiet about the recent NDIS changes. It's been a lot to process for allied health providers and NDIS participants alike. While these changes are extremely disappointing, it's been pleasing to see health professionals and NDIS participants band together across the nation.

This has been a gentle reminder that people are ALWAYS at the centre of what we do. No matter what’s happening around us, putting people first and ACTUALLY listening to their stories is what makes our work so special. An impairment-focused approach should never, ever replace a person centered approach. Period.

Executive function has become a bit of a buzzword... but! It's such important skill for every day life.

In a nutshell, executive functioning is a set of mental skills that help us manage our thoughts, actions, and emotions so that we can complete goal-directed activities. These skills act as the “control centre” of the brain, allowing us to plan, organise, remember information, and regulate our behaviour.

Executive function skills include:

🧠 Working Memory
The ability to hold and use information in your mind for short periods (e.g., remembering instructions or a shopping list).

🗣 Inhibitory Control (Self-Control)
The skill to pause and think before acting, resist distractions, and control impulses.

💥 Cognitive Flexibility
The ability to switch between tasks, adapt to new situations, and see things from different perspectives.

⏰ Planning and Organisation
Setting goals, making plans, and organising tasks or materials to achieve those goals.

😡🤩 Emotional Regulation
Managing emotions to respond appropriately to situations and challenges.

Why is Executive Functioning Important?
🧒 For Children: It helps with following instructions, managing emotions, staying focused, and building independence.
👩‍🦳 For Adults: It supports juggling responsibilities, making decisions, managing time, and coping with stress.

Okay, let them win sometimes... even most of the time. BUT not all of the time!

We have seen a huge spike in referrals for support with emotional regulation, specifically related to losing games.

If your little one is struggling with losing, give this a try:

* Play a structured game (naughts and crosses) where you intentionally take turns winning and losing.
* Make sure they know when it is their turn to win or lose.
* Talk about how they might feel when they win or lose- "you might feel disappointed, and that is okay".
* Role play replacement behaviours to expel frustrations- push their hands together, tense their legs, or take a deep breath
* Once they are comfortable with this, try again without planning who will win or lose.

Remember to encourage fair play and celebrate effort, not just victory 🤝

☑️ Encourages a proper pencil grip
☑️ Development of core strength
☑️ Encourages midline crossing

Next time your kiddo asks to draw, tape the paper onto a tiled wall, mirrored door or glass window. Avoid using indoor walls unless you're after a permanent artwork! 😅🎨

1️⃣ Monopoly – Perfect for building maths skills, money management, turn-taking, and strategic thinking. Kids practise counting, planning ahead, and learning about patience and resilience!

2️⃣ Cluedo – A fantastic game for developing problem-solving, logical reasoning, and memory. Children use clues, ask questions, and think critically to solve the mystery.

3️⃣ Scrabble – Ideal for expanding vocabulary, spelling, and word recognition. It also supports fine motor skills as kids handle letter tiles and encourages creative thinking.
