Congratulations to Dr Ewan Cai, who received the F.G. Christensen Memorial Prize. 🎉 This award is given to the candidate with the highest marks in the Primary Dental Sciences (PDS) Examination.

Ewan also earned the Subject Prize for the highest marks in Pathology 👏🏅

✨ From rural practice to hospital dentistry — read Ewan's story:
Ewan graduated from the University of Sydney with a Doctor of Dental Medicine in 2022, before embarking on his journey of clinical dentistry in a rural private practice in Young, NSW. In those early post-graduate years, Ewan honed his skills in general dentistry, with a particular interest in oral surgery. It is in these formative years that Ewan developed a desire to pursue excellence, which prompted him to undertake the Primary Dental Sciences Examination.

For Ewan, the PDS Examination represented a hurdle between early clinical practice and future opportunities in specialist dental training, but also an opportunity to consolidate important foundational knowledge critical to understanding clinical practice. Ewan states the exam has helped him “break down clinical issues to its first principles, to come up with effective solutions”. The knowledge gained from studying for these exams has proven to be invaluable in his clinical practice.

However, juggling full-time clinical work and studying is no easy feat. Ewan initially found this process difficult and jarring, especially being two years out from graduating dental school and having to “re-learn how to learn”. Through the support of his principal dentist and family, Ewan was able to find dedicated time to put towards studying for the exam, which he eventually found to be quite a cathartic and enjoyable process. He utilised advice from his peers and mentors, including previous candidates, to help him prepare for the exam. In particular, he found the lectures and past examination papers from the Preparation Course very useful in guiding his study.

Ewan is currently working as a Dental Officer at Nepean Hospital and Hawkesbury Hospital, as well as a Clinical Educator for the University of Sydney at Westmead Hospital. He enjoys the challenges of working in a public hospital as well as helping develop the next generation of dentists.

📢 MRACDS(GDP) Program Updates – Effective from 2026
We’re refining the MRACDS(GDP) Program to better align with contemporary assessment practices and support the needs of today’s general dental practitioners. These updates will apply to candidates enrolling from 2026 onwards.

🔍 Key changes include:
• Core module assessments will transition from short answer questions to multiple choice questions
• Case reports will each cover three elective subjects (instead of one per report)
• Viva Voce will focus on candidate-submitted case reports (no unseen cases)
• CPD requirement revised to 20 hours per year (formerly 120 hours total)

These enhancements aim to improve flexibility, clinical relevance, and the overall candidate experience—while maintaining the high standards the College is known for.

Dentistry can be demanding — both mentally and physically — so finding time to recharge is essential.

For some of our Fellows and Members, that means stepping away from the chair and embracing passions that refuel their energy, creativity, and focus.

🚴‍♀️ Dr Erin Mahoney cycling around Lake Hayes in Central Otago
🏌️‍♂️ Dr John Dale enjoying a round of golf at Royal Sydney Golf Club
🤝 Dr Charmaine Hall attending networking events and socialising with colleagues
🏀 Dr Emilija Jensen travelling the world & shooting hoops (her recent visit was to Antarctica!)

These moments outside of work aren’t just hobbies — they’re part of what keeps us inspired and performing at our best for our patients.

💬 What’s your way to recharge outside of dentistry?
