“Can I get a cataract again after cataract surgery?”

This is a common question we hear from patients. The short answer is no, you can’t get another cataract because your natural lens is replaced with a clear artificial one during surgery.

However, sometimes a cloudy film can form behind the new lens. This is called posterior capsule opacification (PCO), or what some refer to as a “secondary cataract.” It’s not a true cataract, but it can cause blurry vision similar to one.

What you’re seeing in the photo is an example of PCO on an artificial lens.

The good news? It’s easily treated with a quick, painless laser procedure that restores clear vision.
