Quick visit to our sister clinic Hills Sports Medicine today to see the SSEP team and get my first DEXA scan and RMR test (resting metabolic rate/basal metabolic rate)👨🏻‍⚕️

The RMR test is the most accurate way to calculate the number of calories my body will burn at rest in a 24hour period just by carrying out normal bodily functions like my lungs breathing and my heart pumping blood. This accounts for approximately 60% of the calories burned each day for most people 🫁 🫀

This test was about 20minutes of laying still with my nose blocked breathing through a tube 🗣️

From here, by considering my physical activity levels and it can calculate how many calories my body will need each day, as well as a guide for if I wanted to safely reduce fat (decrease calories) or build muscle (increase calories) 💪🏼

The DEXA scan is the gold standard for assessing body composition (muscle mass, fat mass and the where my body stores fat) 🩻

This took about 5 minutes and all you do is lay still on your back ⚰️

Other measures of body composition like Inbody scans and skin fold calipers have been shown to have errors up to 1-2kg in fat and muscle mass, where DEXA scans can accurately detect changes as small as 200g 🔬

The plan now is simple, I’ll get another scan in the coming 3-6 months, with the goal of improving todays scan by

- Increasing muscle mass 📈
- Decreasing total fat mass 📉

“NEW YEAR, NEW ME”

I think the #1 single biggest reason people don’t stick to their New Years exercise goals is because they’re often based around looking a certain way or seeing a certain number on the scales, not lifestyle changes and building healthy habits 🧱

Then, if/when they reach the number on the scales they’re finished, jobs done, mission accomplished, and they can go back to their old lifestyle that originally got them overweight or unhappy 🙁

Working in gyms/clinics the last 8 years has meant my January’s always consist of multiple conversations around the goal to ‘lose weight, tone up and lose belly fat’

There is absolutely nothing wrong with that as a goal, but it’s often the ‘all or nothing’ approach that has major downfall 💯

When they come in motivated as anything to completely change their diet and workout 6 days/week. It’s often not even February when they realise that the chicken and broccoli diet is not sustainable (or enjoyable), motivation drops off and then they’re right back where they started📉

For any exercise-based New Year’s Resolutions, my advice is to undershoot, make your goals realistic, achievable and set yourself up for success ✅

The second slide shows a list of benefits of exercise that have nothing to do with how you look.

A friendly reminder that the benefits of exercise go far beyond how you look and what you weigh, and pretty much everything improves when you move your body regularly, exercise is for everyone!

If you’re looking to make some changes in the New Year and after some advice, shoot me a message and we can set some realistic, achievable goals to build some momentum for a big 2023! 🎉

Exercise isn’t a punishment, it’s a privilege ✊🏼
