Anxiety can have a profound impact on our bodies, and here's why:

When anxiety strikes, it triggers physiological responses that can disrupt blood flow, leading to those unsettling chills and shivers. You might find yourself feeling shaky and like you're losing control.

These physical manifestations of anxiety can often be distressing, including symptoms like trembling, blushing, sweating, stuttering, nausea, and even digestive discomfort. It's a heightened self-awareness, often verging on hypervigilance, solely focused on these specific physical symptoms.

Ironically, the fear of others noticing these symptoms can intensify the anxiety, even if they are barely noticeable to anyone else.

Remember, you're not alone in this experience, and understanding it is the first step towards managing it.

Help is available now at The Anxiety Clinic.

Embrace imperfection and stand up to worry!

It's time to stop listening to the worry thoughts that tell us mistakes will be a catastrophe and that we won't cope with the consequences.

The truth is, there's no such thing as perfect, so we're fighting a losing battle.

By experimenting with doing things imperfectly you can discover that the outcome wasn't nearly as bad as the worry thoughts made us believe.

Try small and silly actions like asking for directions to the train station when you’re at the train station, or embrace fear of being judged by intentionally stammering or wearing blush.

These experiments help build resilience and teach us to cope better than worry led us to believe.

So let's face worry head on and embrace imperfection!

Sometimes, when anxiety strikes, it's helpful to shift our focus away from our worries and bring our attention to the present moment. And what better way to do that than by engaging our five senses?

Here are five simple ways to practise purposeful observation and mindfulness:

Sight - Take a moment to look around you. What do you see? Observe the colours, shapes, and details of your surroundings. Let your eyes wander and take in the beauty of the present moment.

Sound - Now, tune in to the sounds around you. What can you hear? Listen to the gentle whispers of nature, the rhythm of your breath, or the distant sounds of the city. Let the auditory sensations ground you in the here and now.

Touch - Shift your attention to the sense of touch. What can you feel? Focus on the sensations against your skin, whether it's the texture of an object, the warmth of sunlight, or the gentle breeze caressing your face. Embrace the tactile experiences that connect you to the present.

Taste - Take a moment to savour the sense of taste. Can you identify any flavors lingering in your mouth? Perhaps you've just had a meal or a refreshing drink. Pay attention to the tastes that are present, letting them remind you of the simple pleasures in life.

Smell - Finally, bring your awareness to the sense of smell. What scents are present in your environment? Inhale deeply and notice any fragrances, whether it's the aroma of fresh flowers, a cup of coffee, or the crisp scent of the outdoors. Let the sense of smell ground you in the present moment.

Practising this mindful engagement of the five senses can be further enhanced through daily mindful walking. Take a stroll with the intention of checking in on whichever senses are relevant to you in the present moment. Slow down your breathing through purposeful action, acknowledge when thoughts arise, allow them to pass, and re-engage with your surroundings.

A healthy body = a healthy mind!

Exercise has been proven time and time again to have a positive impact on our mental wellness.

From reducing stress and anxiety to boosting mood and self-esteem, the benefits are endless.

Whether it's a quick run, a yoga session, or a full-blown workout, getting active has been shown to increase the production of endorphins, the body's natural feel-good hormone.

These endorphins help to alleviate symptoms of depression, anxiety and improve overall mental wellbeing.

If you're struggling with your mental health, adding exercise to your routine could make a world of difference. Even small amounts of physical activity can have significant benefits.

So get moving and start reaping the rewards of a healthy body and mind!
