We’re often asked: “When should I start acupuncture if I’m trying to conceive?”

Here’s what we’d tell you in clinic

If you’re preparing for IVF or embryo transfer, ideally start acupuncture 4–6 weeks beforehand. Research suggests the number of treatments you have before transfer matters.

A few sessions are helpful, but 9–12 sessions spread over several weeks may support better outcomes especially if you’re working with PCOS, endo, or poor implantation in previous cycles.

That said if you’ve only just discovered acupuncture or are mid-cycle, it’s not too late. We can still tailor treatment to where you’re at.

If you’re trying to conceive naturally, it’s also ideal to begin early in your cycle. This allows us to support your body’s natural rhythm helping regulate ovulation, build your uterine lining, and reduce PMS or cycle-related stress.

Many patients say they feel calmer, sleep better, and have more regular periods after even a few treatments. And that matters too.

🌿 You don’t have to do this alone. We’re here to offer grounded, thoughtful care at every step.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in Pregnancy – Gentle, Drug-Free Relief

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) can cause tingling, numbness, or pain in the hands and wrists - especially in the third trimester when fluid retention is highest.

It happens when swelling compresses the median nerve in the wrist, and for some women, it can make everyday tasks and sleep difficult.

Many of our pregnant patients choose acupuncture as a non-invasive, medication-free way to help relieve discomfort and support nerve function.

Research suggests acupuncture can:
🌿 Increase local blood flow
🌿 Reduce inflammation
🌿 Relax surrounding muscles to ease nerve pressure
🌿 Modulate pain signals through the nervous system

At The Acupuncture Pregnancy Clinic, we tailor each session to your pregnancy stage and symptoms, and we can also suggest ergonomic tips, stretches, and naturopathic strategies to help you feel more comfortable.

📍 Available in Alexandria, Sydney CBD, Westmead, Central Coast, East Melbourne & Mornington

A time to reflect, remember, and raise awareness

October is recognised globally as Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month — a time to honour the babies who left too soon, and to acknowledge the families whose lives have been forever changed by their loss.

Each year in Australia, around 3,000 families experience stillbirth or newborn loss. When early miscarriage and pregnancy loss are included, that number grows much higher. Behind every statistic is a family carrying love, grief, and memories that remain part of their story.

At The Acupuncture Pregnancy Clinic, we recognise how important it is to talk openly about pregnancy and infant loss. Awareness creates understanding. Conversation brings connection. And compassion helps to remind every family that they are not alone.

Why Awareness Matters
Pregnancy and infant loss touches many families, yet it often remains unspoken. By raising awareness, we help to normalise these conversations and provide a safe, supportive space for those navigating grief. It also reminds healthcare professionals and the wider community how vital empathy and continuity of care are in these moments.

Whether you’ve experienced loss personally or wish to show support for someone who has, we invite you to take part.
🕯️ Light a candle.
💗 Share a moment of reflection.
🌍 Join the wave of light that reminds every family: you are seen, your love matters, and you are not alone.

Can You Improve Egg Quality Naturally?
Yes — and it starts with focused preconception care.

Your eggs don’t regenerate, but their health can be supported.
✨ Better egg quality means:
• Higher chance of fertilisation
• Stronger embryo development
• Lower miscarriage risk
• Better IVF outcomes
→ And it all starts 3–6 months before conception.

Hormonal imbalances such as PCOS, endometriosis, or thyroid conditions can affect egg development.
📌 Optimising nutrition, lifestyle, and stress can help create a healthier ovarian environment.

In Chinese Medicine, we focus on whole-person care improving ovulation, reducing inflammation, and supporting hormonal balance.

Check out Top 10 Preconception Tips for Egg Health in the post.

🥗 Nutrition & Egg Health – Why It Matters
A balanced diet helps regulate hormones, supports egg development, and enhances endometrial and ovarian health all vital for natural conception and IVF success.

🧬 Epigenetics – It Starts Before Conception
The health of your egg (and s***m) shapes your baby’s future.
The first 1000 days from preconception to toddlerhood influence lifelong health.
→ Nutrition and lifestyle choices now can positively affect gene expression and disease risk.

📌 Start making changes 3–6 months before trying to conceive.

At The Acupuncture Pregnancy Clinic, we offer carefully tailored herbal formulas to support patients preparing for conception whether naturally or alongside IVF.

Our “Prepare to Conceive” range are based on two well-established Chinese herbal formulas:
🟢 Si Wu Tang – used to nourish Blood, support follicle and endometrial development
🟣 Liu Wei Di Huang Wan – used to support Kidney Yin, ovarian reserve, and hormonal balance

🔍 What the research says:
📌 Si Wu Tang:
A 2021 preclinical study (Zhou et al., J Ethnopharmacol) found this formula may improve ovarian function, reduce oxidative stress, and enhance angiogenesis—key for follicular growth.

📌 Liu Wei Di Huang Wan:
A 2014 RCT (Lian et al.) found it improved embryo quality and increased clinical pregnancy rates in IVF patients with Kidney Yin deficiency.

📌 Meta-analysis (Ried, 2015):
Women receiving Chinese herbal medicine had 1.74x higher pregnancy rates than those receiving Western medicine alone (60% vs 33%).

📌 Kwon et al., 2020:
Across 43 RCTs, CHM was linked with improved live birth and clinical pregnancy rates, even when used during IVF stimulation phases.

We adjust formulas based on cycle phase, IVF timing, and TCM diagnosis and work closely with medical teams to ensure safe, collaborative care.

How IVF Acupuncture Supports Patients and Outcomes 🌱

IVF can feel overwhelming physically and emotionally. Many of our patients tell us they’re looking for extra support to improve their chances, reduce stress, and feel calmer through the process.

✨Research suggests acupuncture during IVF may:
▪ Improve blood flow to the ovaries and uterus, helping support follicle and lining development

▪ Regulate stress hormones and calm the nervous system

▪ Support embryo transfer by reducing cramping and creating a more receptive uterine environment

▪ Improve implantation and pregnancy rates when a course of treatments is used (more than 3 sessions, ideally 9–12 before transfer)

🔬 From a technical point of view, acupuncture works through:
▪ Promoting vasodilation → increasing circulation to reproductive organs

▪ Influencing neurotransmitters that regulate ovulation and menstrual cycles

▪Releasing natural endorphins that reduce stress and support relaxation

▪ Modulating the HPA axis to balance stress and reproductive hormones

💡 IVF acupuncture isn’t a “one-off” treatment it’s a therapy that works best with the right timing and dose across the IVF cycle.

💡 Trying to conceive? Knowing your body’s signs can help.

Your cervix changes throughout your cycle. As ovulation approaches, it becomes soft, high, open, and wet (acronym used is SHOW) – making it easier for s***m to travel and meet the egg.

Once s***m are through the cervix, they have quite the journey! They travel through the uterus and along the Fallopian tubes to wait for the egg.

Having s*x just before you ovulate gives them the best chance of being in the right place at the right time.

We see many patients in clinic who want support with:
🌿 Cycle tracking and fertility awareness
🌿 Hormonal balance and ovulation health
🌿 Preconception care for both partners
🌿 Integrative support alongside IVF

🌿 Women’s Health Week 2025 🌿
During Women’s Health Week, we’re focusing on care for anyone who needs gynaecological, reproductive, or hormonal support.

For too long, many people navigating hormonal and reproductive health have felt unheard. Whether it’s endo, PCOS, postpartum anxiety, or perimenopause, the message has often been: "It’s just a part of being person with a uterus or being a person who menstruate ". But we know better now.

The reality:
▪1 in 7 live with endometriosis, often waiting up to 8 years for diagnosis
▪PCOS affects 1 in 10, with long delays to care
▪Perimenopause starts in the 30s for many—but is still poorly understood
▪Postnatal mental health issues affect 1 in 5 new parents

✨ But there’s progress:
▪11 new endometriosis and pelvic pain clinics now open
▪Medicare is funding longer specialist consults
▪Research is expanding—from acupuncture and herbal medicine to medicinal cannabis
▪The Women’s Health Research & Translation Network is connecting leaders nationwide

Meanwhile, we’re drawing from one of the world’s oldest medical systems—Traditional Chinese Medicine, which began documenting gynaecological care over 3,000 years ago. Gynaecological texts described syndromes like painful periods, postpartum depletion, and infertility for thousands of years. Herbal formulas and acupuncture have long been used to support:

▪Menstrual health and hormonal balance
▪Fertility
▪Pregnancy and postnatal recovery
▪Perimenopausal transitions

🌈 All bodies with cycles – however they look, however they feel
💚All parents healing and finding their rhythm after birth
💛 Everyone navigating hormones, identity, or health changes
📚 The researchers and policy-makers working to make care better
💪 Those speaking up and asking questions
🏳️‍⚧️ All genders and identities—deserving of safe, respectful care

And we’re thinking of:

🧑‍⚕️ The midwives, GPs, acupuncturists and allied health professionals advocating for holistic care
🤰 Those navigating fertility, IVF, pregnancy, postpartum or hormonal transitions
🗣️ Anyone who’s ever said: “Something’s not right—and I deserve support.”

We see you.
We’re with you.
We’re proud to support you—then, now, and always.

Our Story

The Acupuncture Pregnancy clinics (incorporating the original Acupuncture IVF Support clinics) in Sydney and Melbourne and the Central Coast are the first of their kind in Australia. The first clinic was established in 2008 in response to evidence from clinical trial results which demonstrated some benefits of acupuncture for IVF patients. Since then we have seen more than 12,000 patients.

Professional integrity, best practice and offering appropriate clinical programs are a priority for us – in a field where patients can sometimes be very vulnerable. We see couples or single women who are trying to conceive, whether with IVF or naturally. Many of our patients, once they conceive, like to be looked after during their pregnancies and helped with labour preparation too.
