Even more reason to try conservative treatment (i.e. physiotherapy) before invasive means! (e.g. surgery)

Of course there are going to be exceptions to the rule but with more and more evidence to suggest the benefits of exercise over surgery it is going to worth the conversation to bring up with your health care professional.

Original post:

"Great to see a simple home exercise program was able to improve knee function to the point where people did not want to have surgery anymore.

This study further supports the current notion that we should advocate our clients and patients to attempt an exercise program first before embarking into surgery. Not always going to be the right move but with numbers like the above it is definitely worth bringing up.

What are barriers to you see people have in not triailing an exercise program before surgery
Husted, Rasmus Skov, Anders Troelsen, Henrik Husted, Birk Mygind Grønfeldt, Kristian Thorborg, Thomas Kallemose, Michael Skovdal Rathleff, and Thomas Bandholm. "Knee-extensor strength, symptoms, and need for surgery after two, four, or six exercise sessions/week using a home-based one-exercise program: a randomized dose–response trial of knee-extensor resistance exercise in patients eligible for knee replacement (the QUADX-1 trial)." Osteoarthritis and Cartilage (2022)."

Jokes aside.....

Did you know prehab and rehab from physiotherapists increase the likelihood of success after a total knee or hip replacement?

Thinking your chest pains may be heart attack symptoms? It is vital to rule out any cardiovascular event with your Doctor.

However, It may also just be Costochondritis. This is a condition that affects your ribs and sternum and mimics the symptoms of a heart attack.

As a physio with many years experience in kickboxing and mma, I've always felt that this was true. It makes sense as well, the muscles in our legs are the largest muscles, so it makes sense they would be more important when throwing a powerful punch. And now with this article, it's been proved!

Credit to g.physio for this great post!

Original post:
"We've all heard the phrase when learning to box/punch ''it all comes from the legs''. Well turns out it's actually true!!

Contrary to popular thought (at least mine) a stronger bench press did not equate to a stronger punch. López-Laval, Isaac et al 2020 showed this with professional boxers where their 1RM bench press was found NOT to correlate with their punch performance (max punch velocity).

If you look at the bench press speed however we find that rear arm punch (cross) velocity was correlated with bench press speed however the lead arm punch (jab) again saw no correlation with bench press velocity, at any intensity (%RM).

So with the bench it's about how fast you can lift the weight. What about the legs?

Dunn, EC et al 2022 (fresh!!) looked at highly trained amateur boxers and found positive correlations between isometric thigh pull and countermovement jump, and punch performance (punch impact force). Lower body strength had a strong and postive correlation with peak punch force production.

This study also looked at countermovement bench throw, isometric bench push where despite thoughts that having a stronger upper body will increase peak punch force, there were NOT correlated with peak punch force.

Great findings from the 2 studies that ultimately ruined my non-fighter biases that a bigger bench would result in a stronger punch. I guess those big biceps ARE just for show hey?

Credit to for educating me on this topic. He trains Alex Volkanovski so he may know a thing or two about combat sports. Give him a follow!!
