It’s been a while since my last post! I just noticed I had created these graphics but hadn’t shared them yet.

Echolalia is communication - scripts can convey meaning even if it’s not immediately apparent.

Always try to investigate what someone is trying to convey with the scripts they use. Look beyond the literal meaning of the words!

SLP’s can work as part of a team to help with the treatment of selective mutism. Working alongside medical professionals, psychologists and behavioural therapists, an SLP can use various strategies to increase the person’s confidence in speaking up by improving their receptive and expressive language and providing opportunities for the person to observe recordings of themselves talking in comfortable situations.

Children or adults who are non-speaking, minimally speaking or experience situational mutism can benefit from introducing an AAC device to facilitate communication with family, friends and school staff.

Always presume competence and remember that AAC actually increase language skills such as vocabulary and a variety communicative functions (statements, comments, questions, negation etc.).

Talk to your child’s therapist about introducing AAC.
