What an immense privilege to introduce you to Size Inclusive Health Australia’s vice president Ellen Masson. They are a passionate and dedicated leader in the size inclusive healthcare space. Ellen welcome!

Get to know Ellen: Ellen Masson (they/them) is an accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP), personal trainer, and strength and conditioning coach with over eight years of experience in the fitness industry. Ellen is deeply passionate about providing person-centred, size-inclusive healthcare and is a dedicated advocate for changes within the medical and fitness industries to better support fat individuals in accessing non-stigmatizing care. Ellen owns Your Movement Space, a small private studio located in Kirribilli, Sydney, that offers size-inclusive, HAES-aligned services. Their approach is rooted in social justice principles, trauma-informed care, and deep respect for the lived experiences of those they work with. Ellen’s mission is to provide a space for clients to unlearn harmful societal messages about movement and to help folk rebuild a positive relationship with it.

In addition to their clinical work, Ellen serves as an educator, mentoring other Exercise Physiologists in the size-inclusive and eating disorder spaces. They share their expertise through Instagram content, mentoring, educational presentations and as a co-host of the podcast Into The Red Zone.

🎉Thrilled to introduce this offering to the world! A heartfelt thank you goes out to all the fat educators and activists who have bravely led the charge in this field.

Their unwavering courage to share knowledge in the face of adversity has make me the practitioner I am today. Without their trailblasing efforts, this presentation wouldn’t have been possible. 🎉

🌟 There is a reason that fat folk also need to reefed during eating disorder recovery, and it’s the fact that they too are often malnourished or deprived of the micro and macro nutritions they need to thrive optimally.

Malnourishment doesn’t discriminate. If you have inadequate dietary intake you are at risk, regardless of your body size or shape.

Thank you so much to and for all their incredible work and resource collecting in this area.

Please go read Christy’s Wired article titled ‘Covid-19 doesn’t discriminate by body weight.’ You can find a link to this in her description box on her Instagram page.

Please also read Ragen Chastain’s blog (Dances with Fat) called ‘Study - body size not a Covid-19 risk factor.’ This can be found via a simple Google search.

This is the citation for the first large-scale study that examined weight as a risk factor for Covid-19, taking into consideration all the variables discussed in the post:

Ioannou GN, Locke E, Green P, et al. Risk Factors for Hospitalization, Mechanical Ventilation, or Death Among 10 131 US Veterans With SARS-CoV-2 Infection. JAMA Netw Open. 2020;3(9):e2022310. doi:10.1001/jamanetworkopen.2020.22310.

I don’t care if this word was purely a medical word once upon a time, it’s not now. We do our folk in larger bodies such a deserves by using this stigmatising language when there are alternatives that the fat activists and liberationists have put forward.

If we all really cared about fat folks health (like we supposedly claim to do) why would we continue to do things the community has stated is doing active harm?

It’s a small change in langue, it’s not that hard and it’s not that complicated. You don’t need to fully understand a marginalised groups struggles to be able to listening to them.

It shouldn’t be the oppressed role to advocate of themselves ever, let alone environments that are unsafe.

It’s our job to know this oppression and trauma exists and advocate for them.

This is a quote from and it holds true every single New Year.

Just a gentle reminder that I understand if shrinking your body is the only way you can feel safe in this world. This is not your issue as an individual, this is a system issue. The world is failing you and continuing to fail you, over and over again.

We need a revolution. We need to end systematic fat phobia and weight stigma. We need to stop putting this on the individual to fix though often dangerous weight loss measures. We need a revolution. We need to act!
