Weight lifting for bone health!

Here is an insight into a supervised strength training session, aimed at improving bone density for Osteopenia. Lisa here has been training at Holistic Physio for a year now, and has seen her deadlift increase from 8kg to 38kg!

It is a common misconception that women shouldn't be lifting weights... but this couldn't be further from the truth. It is in fact vital for maintaining our muscular strength & endurance, muscle mass and bone health. All of which are vital for maintaining our quality of life.

Strength training can also help prevent falls, improve metabolic and cardiovascular function, posture and confidence.

Meet The Team:
Patrick Hughes

Patrick has been working in private practice for close to a decade, specialising in exercise rehabilitation for musculoskeletal conditions, as well as chronic disease management for metabolic & bone thinning conditions. Patrick also has extra training from our Physiotherapy team, which gives him the edge over standard Exercise Physiology. This has given him sound knowledge in delivering education & advice for a majority of injuries, as well as prescribing evidence-based exercise rehabilitation throughout different stages and for various conditions.

Patrick’s treatment philosophy is individualised patient-specific progressive exercise-based therapy, in conjunction with improving the way people move in day-day life, in order to help patients reduce pain and/or return to the activities they enjoy most.

Patrick also heads up our Guardian Program, offering supervised rehabilitation group classes, together with his own Group Training strength classes, 1-on-1 Exercise Physiology sessions, and online coaching for weight loss.

4 POINT KNEELING LEG AND ARM EXTENSIONS (Gentle beginners exercise)

This exercise is a very gentle starting point for strengthening the glutes and shoulders, whilst challenging the cores ability to keep you stable.

This is a good start for someone with a lower back injury, avoiding full hip extension, so as to not put too much pressure on the spine.

THE BEST EXERCISE AND DIET REVEALED!

I often get asked "what's the best diet and exercise?"

Looking at all the diet and exercise wars taking place on the battlefield of social media, each side carefully cherry-picking their evidence to confirm their pre-existing beliefs, it's no wonder people are confused.

I can easily sit down and create compelling arguments for high intensity interval training or slow steady aerobic exercise. I can also create equally compelling arguments for low carb/high protein or normal carb/average protein diets.

There is an absolute metric tonne of published research on diet and exercise, some of it high quality and much of it complete rubbish (i.e., small number of subjects, poorly controlled, weak outcome measures, low statistical power, published in predatory open access online "journals").

But the truth is, it's not really all that complicated. We KNOW exercise is good for you. We KNOW eating less junk food is good for you. Mountains of epidemiological research supports this.

However, the real smoking gun is ADHERENCE (your ability to stick with it). If you go on a "diet" and you can't stick with it because it's too restrictive, then it's NOT a good diet for you.

If you start doing a certain type of exercise and you're miserable and can't stick with it, then it's not the right exercise for you.

Bottom line: find an exercise you love and a nutrient-dense diet you can stick with over the long-term and then you will not only "lose weight" (i.e. fat) but are more likely to keep it off for good!
