By far the most captivating and rewarding element of birth for me is witnessing women’s return to trust — in themselves, their bodies, and their maternal instincts. This is Anna’s powerful story of 4.6kg home-birth ✨
~~~
After an induction and instrumental birth (vacuum + episiotomy) with my first baby (Izzy, 4.3kg), I deeply wanted a different experience — a spontaneous and undisturbed birth. To support this vision, at 28 weeks I engaged Sarah (to be our doula) and switched our model of care from HMGP to BMGP (hospital to home).
At 40+3, mild tightenings started — I didn’t think much of them. But by 1:30am at 40+5, I was timing waves I could no longer ignore. My amazing husband Sam set up the birth space, Izzy went to Grandma’s, and things slowly but surely ramped up.
By morning, Sarah and our midwives had arrived. I labored all around the house — pool, shower, bed, back to the floor — but time blurred. I had multiple crisis-of-confidence moments, sure I couldn’t do it. But with gentle reassurance and spinning babies techniques, we kept on.
Eventually, I felt the unmistakable urge to push — and after some wild surges, a slow trickle of waters, and that unforgettable ring of fire, Leon was born into his dad’s hands at 1:23pm. All 4.6kg of him. At home. In my power. With a seamless placenta delivery and only second-degree tear.
We think his slightly tilted head (and superman hand by his face!) made it longer and tougher than expected, but my body was trusted, given time to do its work.
Bringing his chest to mine, I said “I did it” at least twenty times 🤍 and that triumphant feeling rippled through my body.
It was truly a transformative experience and having Sarah, Jodean and Elleke helped me stay grounded to achieve the birth I always hoped for.
From womb to world, still held in community.
These babies - born in March - form the next season. Once curled up in their mothers’ bellies during prenatal yoga, now gathering earthside in the collective womb of YogiMamas.
I’ve witnessed how their mamas carried them, birthed them, and now hold them — with strength, softness, and presence.
Our nervous systems raise our babies.
Our intentions frame interactions that create a blueprint for relationship. Our beliefs land only as deeply as we’re connected to our own bodies.
Yoga, the union of breath, body, and awareness, is where healing begins — for us and for them 💛
I’ve always found yoga to be a platform for conscious connection, and never is connection more vital than in the raw, transformative season of early motherhood.
This beautiful group of women first joined me for prenatal (birth prep) yoga, setting the stage for not just their bodies but their hearts and minds ahead of the journey of birth. I had the deep honour of supporting five of them through that sacred rite of passage — witnessing their strength, their power, and surrender.
Now, in the tender season that follows birth, they return — babes in arms — to reconnect and build friendships on a foundation of prenatal connection.
These incredible mamas all birthed within weeks of each other, and over the past weeks, we’ve gathered to move gently, breathe deeply, and support with intention.
Each mums & bubs class begins with heartfelt conversation around a soulful parenting theme — from identity shifts to nervous system regulation and self-compassion. Then we settle into an hour of deeply restorative yoga, followed by nourishing morning tea and open, honest chats.
These are not just classes. This is a village. A space to feel seen, supported, and safe. A reminder that motherhood was never meant to be done alone.
Forever in awe of the magic that happens when women gather — especially in this tender season 💛
Noah (27/02/25) 4kg born at exactly 42 weeks | natural birth in hospital after missing homebirth cut-off by hours.
I searched for all signs that he was coming. Lightning crotch, crampy poos, light contractions — poor Sarah (our doula) was way too informed of my bowel habits!
I was anticipating to go post-dates, but I wasn’t expecting all the pressure that came at 41 wks, given I was in the Belmont low-risk home-birth program.
At 41+2, I lost part of my plug but no contractions. My waters started leaking at 41+5, and I felt the timeline closing in on me. I found it hard to relax on a deadline. I agreed to have a membrane sweep at 41+6 to give myself the best chance of preserving our home-birth.
At 4am on 42 wks, I was finally in active labour, but we had missed the homebirth cut-off by four hours!
Labouring at home, I breathed through surges with my partner, Thy and Sarah by my side. I accepted the change in birth setting and we transitioned to hospital to use the shower and bath, declining CTG and IV.
After an hour of bearing down and feeling my body push without any external changes, I decided to have a vaginal exam to get more information so we could respond wisely. I was told I was only 3cm, swollen and posterior. I felt defeated.
Our Midiwife Mel and Sarah encouraged me to do Spinning Babies to help him turn. Miraculously after, with rest and gas, I had progressed to 8cm in the hour.
I did deep squats on the side of the bed to bring him lower, and finally, dropping to all fours, Noah was born. He was passed through my legs and onto my chest - slippery, warm and perfect. I felt fatigued and elated.
Back on the bed, pushing what I thought was placenta came a huge splatter of blood. It looked like a horror movie and the room filled with hospital staff. Sarah kept my focus on Noah. I felt fine but accepted synto injection to clear the room. It turned out not to be a major haemorrhage - just a dramatic one!
Labour was 9 hours. I have never had to reach so far inside myself to access the depth of strength and power required to bring our baby earth-side. Thankful for the team I had around me; partner, midwife and doula.
Blessed to support this gorgeous family in birth twice. After a long and challenging labour with her first, Zoe’s home-birth was healing, joyful, and exactly what she had envisioned.
Summer (8/2/25) born at 40+6 on a bright, beautiful summers day.
I woke at 2:50am needing to p*e and noticed my bloody show, followed by mild cramping. By 4am, light contractions had begun, but I was able to drift back to sleep. I woke again around 7:30am and spent a peaceful morning in bed while my husband, Mitch and 15 month old, Violet, started their day. We followed our usual weekend ritual - smoothies and a walk to the park.
As the contractions grew stronger by 10am, we headed home, and I focused on staying calm and grounded.
Around 11:15am, I took a shower and found peace in the solitude, breathing through strong surges while kneeling on a yoga mat. By noon, I was no longer getting breaks and asked Mitch to call Sarah, our doula who had also supported our first birth.
Sarah arrived at 1:15pm. I was still in disbelief that I could be so close, but she guided me through each wave with hip squeezes and birth tools. I tried changing positions, eventually getting up to lean over the bathroom vanity as the pressure built.
By 1:35pm, our Belmont midwives arrived and one quietly said, “you’re going to meet your baby soon,” which gave me a much needed surge of strength.
Within minutes, my body began to push involuntarily. Standing in the bathroom, I birthed Summer into the loving presence of Mitch, Violet and our trusted birth team. She arrived at 1:45pm, and I stood there in awe and gratitude—shocked, elated, and proud.
Despite the intensity of such a fast labour, I didn’t need any stitches, and my recovery was gentle and smooth. I’m endlessly grateful—to Mitch who held a loving space for me; to Sarah and our midwives, who empowered me every step of the way, and Violet, who witnessed her sister’s birth with such grace and calm.
It was the perfect final morning as a family of three—and the most beautiful beginning for Summer’s life.
Did you love ’s birth story in the last post?
Here’s a fascinating look at how brilliantly her body worked during labour (Slide 1):
During active labour at home, Aimee’s contractions were strong and rhythmic, but spaced consistently far apart. Knowing she was carrying a smaller baby, it’s likely her body was allowing bub extra recovery time between surges - brilliant, right?!
This unique pattern stayed consistent; powerful waves followed by generous pauses. Aimee chose to head to hospital based on how she felt internally - not following a textbook contraction pattern.
Reminder: Don’t rely on contraction timer apps to tell you when to transfer—they’re algorithms, not midwives. They don’t understand the beautiful variation in physiological birth.
Slides 2 & 3 – Forward Leaning Inversion:
Practiced daily in the third trimester, this Spinning Babies technique helps create more space in the uterus by gently lengthening and untwisting ligaments. It supports baby’s optimal position and helps prepare the passageway for birth.
Early in the third trimester, I guide my doula clients through Spinning Babies and OMP techniques to promote balance and alignment. That way, we could trust Aimee’s contraction pattern wasn’t reflective of baby’s position—it was just nature doing its thing.
Who doesn’t love a positive VBAC (vaginal birth after caesarean) story! Amy doesn’t give herself enough credit in this review.
Amy contacted me prior to conceiving and even then had already done so much work on unpacking her first emergency CS birth and testing breastfeeding journey (previous post on this). Amy was informed, prepared and knew exactly how it was going to go…
She applied for the MGP early (midwifery group practise) at Maitland Public Hospital so she could receive continuity of care in pregnancy. Amy didn’t go into appointments asking for permission, she delivered instructions - minimal intervention; no growth scans, no induction, no CTG (continuous monitoring) or epidural. Labour started spontaneously at 41+4 and she birthed a 4.1kg baby in no time at all!
Amy was an absolute BOSS in her pregnancy and labour and her partner, Tom was right by her side every step of the way backing her decision and trusting her intuition.
This family is nothing short of inspirational. They say you birth how you live, but I believe you also live and parent how you birth - follow their latest adventure over on Insta: a 150acre regenerative farm protecting biodiversity in the Australian Hunter bushland with their daughters
