Physical and Mental Health Are Closely Linked

When we face challenges with our physical health, like illness or injury, it can also impact our mental well-being. For people who experience a spinal cord injury (SCI), resulting in paraplegia or quadriplegia, the effects go beyond physical limitations. Both the injury and its treatment can influence how you think and feel.

After an SCI, you may experience changes in mobility, independence, employment, finances, and daily life, as well as shifts in how you see yourself and connect with others. It’s natural to feel uncertain about the future or worry about sharing these feelings with others. Remember, these are common responses, and there is support available. With the right information, resources, and treatment, it’s possible to manage these feelings and find a path forward.

You’re not aloneβ€”support is out there. πŸ’™

The SMART Trial, funded by a $15 million NSW Government grant in partnership with Spinal Cure, is exploring innovative therapies to support those with SCI. We’re looking for volunteers to join this exciting study!

Understanding Complications of Spinal Cord Injury (SCI)

Living with SCI presents unique challenges. Common complications include:

- Loss of Bladder and Bowel Control
- Breathing Issues
- Chronic Pain
- Pressure Sores
- Blood Pressure Control Issues
- Muscle Tone Changes

SCI can also take a toll on mental health. The trauma of SCI increases the risk of depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

For those affected by SCI, understanding and managing these complications with a support network and healthcare team is essential.

If you or a loved one has experienced a spinal cord injury (SCI), understanding treatment options is essential. Initial care often includes stabilizing the spine, and in some cases, surgery to prevent further damage. Depending on the injury’s severity, treatment may involve:

- Breathing support: Mechanical ventilation or oxygen therapy.
- Urinary care: A catheter to aid in urine drainage.
- Skin care: Position changes every 2–4 hours to prevent pressure sores.
- Blood clot prevention: Medications to reduce the risk of clots.
- Emotional support: A dedicated team of social workers, psychologists, or chaplains.

After initial recovery, many patients spend months in specialized rehabilitation, learning to adapt and regain independence.

The SMART Trial, funded by a $15 million NSW Government grant in partnership with Spinal Cure, is exploring innovative therapies to support those with SCI. We’re looking for volunteers to join this exciting study!

🚨 What Causes a Spinal Cord Injury? 🚨

Spinal Cord Injuries (SCIs) can happen suddenly due to:

Traffic accidents
Sports injuries
Diving into shallow water
Violence
Falls

SCIs can also result from health conditions like:
Arthritis
Cancer
Infections
Inflammation

When the spinal cord is injured, swelling can stop the nerves from working properly.

If you experience fatigue, chronic pain, anxiety, or other related symptoms, join the SMART Trial at Royal North Shore Hospital to explore a non-invasive self-regulation therapy.

What are the symptoms of a spinal cord injury (SCI)?

After an accident, signs of a spinal cord injury may include:

- Tingling, loss of movement, or sensation below the injury site
- Difficulty breathing

🌟 What is a Spinal Cord Injury? 🌟

A spinal cord injury (SCI) occurs when the spinal cord is damaged, affecting movement, sensation, and even essential bodily functions like breathing, digestion, and sexual function. Your spinal cord is a crucial part of your central nervous system, connecting your brain and body. When injured, this connection is disrupted, leading to a range of challenges.

πŸ”Ή Types of SCI:

Quadriplegia (Tetraplegia): Paralysis of the arms, hands, trunk, and legs.
Paraplegia: Paralysis of the lower body, including the legs and part of the trunk.

πŸ”Ή Severity:

Complete: No movement or feeling below the injury.
Incomplete: Partial movement or feeling in some areas.
