Hippotherapy is a clinical intervention that harnesses the movement of a horse to achieve functional outcomes in children with neurological conditions such as cerebral palsy.
Led by trained physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and speech pathologists, hippotherapy engages the sensory, neuromotor, and cognitive systems through the horse’s rhythmic, three-dimensional movement. This can improve postural control, trunk strength, balance, coordination, and mobility.
The warmth and repetitive motion of the horse can also help reduce muscle tone and increase range of motion, benefits that are especially valuable in managing spasticity and movement challenges in cerebral palsy.
On top of the clinical benefits, kids often see equine-assisted therapy as fun and exciting, which helps them stay motivated and engaged during sessions.
