🙋🏼Asking for help isn’t giving up, it’s refusing to give up.

It takes courage to admit that we need assistance in a particular area. It shows that we are willing to be vulnerable and open to receiving help in order to improve or accomplish something. Seeking help can often lead to growth, learning, and development, all of which are hallmarks of bravery. It shows that we are willing to put in the effort and hard work to become a better version of ourselves rather than trying to do everything alone.

Reach out to Clarity Therapy to schedule a session and take the first step towards healing and well-being.

✨Despite the usual depictions of the festive season, the holidays can be a very stressful time of year. This end of year might mean complex social interactions with family or relatives who you might not want to see. There may be expectations, or at least perceived expectations, for the ‘perfect celebration’, complete with the perfect gift and perhaps the most important meal of the year.

Here are 7️⃣ key tips to getting through, on the Day.

Furthermore, the holiday season is generally promoted as a time of connection with loved ones, including family and friends. For many people though, this time creates feelings of sadness. They may be away from the loved ones, either by choice or by situation. They may feel anxious about the social commitments that come with the festive season. They may just have feelings of loneliness in the midst of celebrating.

Understand the expectations and needs of your loved ones. It can help you know where to set spending limits. Having an open conversation is a way of working towards this. Counselling can help you set goals, work with boundaries, and talk about the stress that can come with holiday spending.

🧠October is here! And it’s also Mental Health Awareness Month!

💭But what does this mean?
Mental Health Awareness Month is an opportunity to have conversations with your friends, family and community about mental health and wellbeing.

💬Here are 3 ways to get involved:

1️⃣My Community

Here are some simple suggestions for supporting your community’s wellbeing:

•Cook meals for your friends when they’re experiencing a difficult time
•Check in on a neighbour or family member who isn’t doing so well
•Invite a friend for a walk, cup of coffee or something they enjoy doing
•Find out more about what it’s like to live with mental illness through people who share their experiences
•Listen to your loved one’s insights into their own mental health challenges
•Volunteer for a local service or activities that improve your community’s wellbeing
•Practice kindness and empathy

Please note: For some people, having a ‘mental health’ conversation may be off-putting. The RU OK website has excellent information on how to start off and have a mental health conversation.

2️⃣My Wellbeing

Everyone’s mental health and wellbeing is important. You can help look after your wellbeing by:

•Getting enough sleep
•Eating regularly and healthily
•Exercising
•Reducing alcohol consumption
•Spending quality time with loved ones or people whose company you enjoy
•Learning ways to manage stress
•Actively managing your use of electronic devices and consumption of social media
•Finding time for things you enjoy, such as outdoor and creative activities or learning a new skill

💙Modern life is full of emotional challenges. The pressure to succeed, the need to "keep up," the fear of missing out, the desire for good relationships, and work satisfaction can all evoke volatile combinations of emotions.

💙However, what we learn in our society is not how to work with our emotions but how to block and avoid them. We do it quite well: Between alcohol use, prescription drug use and screen time, there are a multitude of ways to avoid our feelings.

💙When we do acknowledge them, we swat them away with mantras learned since childhood ("Mind over matter,” "get a grip", and "suck it up" are familiar ones.) To curb one's emotions is bad news for mental and physical health. It's like pressing on the gas and brakes of your car at the same time, creating an internal pressure cooker.

💙Most of us tend to avoid painful or conflicting emotions in our lives because that's what we were taught. But to heal the mind, we need to experience the emotions that go with our stories. When we are taught about the intuitive nature of emotions and learn to identify and work with the core emotions beneath our anxiety, we feel and function better.

❔So, have you healed? Or just trying not to think about it?

⛰Why does everyone experience the same things differently?

🏔The same thing can happen to two people, and they may react completely differently. One person spills coffee on themselves and laughs and cleans it up. Another person also spills coffee on themselves, they sulk and cuss and let it ruin their entire day.

🗻So what makes one person have a totally different experience than the other, yet both went through the same thing?

🌋Well, some of the things that could make up someone’s experiences are

•Past experiences
•Dreams and Goals
•Motivation
•Positive or Negative mindset
•Whether they like challenges or do they see problems
•How they were raised
•Their genetics
•Emotional state
•Mental Health
•Physical Fitness
•Age and what generation they grew up in
•Social conditioning
•Religious beliefs
and many more factors

⛰There are many reasons why many people can have many different experiences with the same thing.
When experiencing this, keep in mind all these factors and deeply understand what is what, be aware of your mindset, and be open-minded.

📝“The first draft of anything is sh*t”
Ernest Hemingway said that, and he was right.

🖊The first “draft” of anything is purely conceptual. It’s about sending what’s in your head through to your hands and onto the page. You shouldn’t expect brilliance.

🖌Yes, it is frustrating not having everything figured out on the first go, and we are prone to quit if we do not immediately succeed. But going back to the drawing board is what makes us a little better time after time.

🖋Things can not be perfect, and we make mistakes all the time. All we can do is learn from these mistakes and keep moving forward.

✏️What is something you can go over and do better today?

Got a feeling that someone you know or care about isn’t behaving as they normally would? Perhaps they seem out of sorts? More agitated or withdrawn? Or they’re just not themselves. Trust that gut instinct and act on it.

By starting a conversation and commenting on the changes you’ve noticed, you could help that family member, friend or workmate open up.

At Clarity Therapy, we encourage you to reach out to colleagues and loved ones regularly and start a conversation.

Asking isn’t always easy, but it could change a life.

💭Did you know that we have anywhere from 40,000 – to 70,000 thoughts per day?

💭We think about a lot of random stuff! Some thoughts are helpful, and some are not.

💭Many people who struggle with depression and anxiety have patterns of thinking that contribute to how we feel and view ourselves.

💭If you struggle with ongoing negative self-talk, remember, a thought is a thought – NOT a truth!

⚠️Next time you catch yourself thinking, “I’m a terrible person” or “I can’t do anything right”, – remind yourself “I am having the thought that I can’t do anything right”. By adding “I’m having the thought that” before it, we remind it’s just a thought – one of many!
