Could exercise be the key to preventing dementia? 🤔 Let me explain!

One of the hallmark features of Alzheimer's Disease is a gradual loss of neurons (nerve cells) in the brain, and a loss of synapses (connections) between the neurons. Eventually this can lead to shrinking of the brain, and all the symptoms we see with dementia.

The good news: When we exert ourselves 🏃‍♀️🏋️‍♂️ there is a release of a hormone in the brain called brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). This hormone stimulates the birth of new neurons, and increases the number of connections – literally the opposite process to Alzheimer's! 😲 If that’s not enough good news, exercise has also been shown to reduce rates of depression, heart disease and diabetes- all of which are strong risk factors for Alzheimer's. 💪🧠

Unfortunately, less than 20% of people over 65 engage in the minimum recommended level of exercise. Unbeknownst to many, this is the time when we should be moving our bodies even more- to stave of dementia! 🤯
