What is a carer?
Many people picture a carer as someone in a professional role, but the truth is much broader than that.
A carer is anyone who supports another person through care, compassion, or presence. You might be a carer if you:
• Check in on a friend who is struggling
• Support a parent, partner, or child
• Help someone attend appointments
• Listen when someone needs to talk
• Step in during a difficult moment
• Help someone feel safe, understood, or less alone
For some people, caring is a long-term responsibility. For others, it may happen during a moment, a crisis, or a short period of someone’s life. Carers can be family members, friends, partners, neighbours, or community members.
Many people don’t realise it, but most of us become carers at some point in our lives. Care is not always formal. Sometimes it simply means showing up when someone needs you.
At SafeWatch, we believe care works best when people are supported by a connected community, a village that helps share the responsibility of looking out for one another.
