Parents often ask if there’s something simple they can do each day to support their child’s brain development.

The good news is that every developing brain thrives on specific types of movement that reinforce early developmental pathways and help maintain integration over time.

The most effective daily movements are those that mirror natural developmental patterns the brain expects throughout childhood.

Below are five movement categories that research and clinical experience consistently show to be foundational for brain balance, regulation, and ongoing reflex integration. Read more 👇

Books don’t reach multiple editions, global translations, and bestseller lists by accident. As Dr. Melillo explains, Disconnected Kids resonates because families read it and think, “This is my child. This is us.” Not just because it names the challenges but because it explains why they’re happening and what can be done.

The core of the book and the work we do is about understanding the brain, identifying imbalances, and giving people practical, science-based ways to create real change.

That philosophy is what the Melillo Method Australia and our centres are built on. Knowledge that empowers families, not just labels problems.

When something finally makes sense, it opens the door to action.

Strong, organised movement lays the foundation for learning and independence. Climbing equipment supports the development of strength, balance, motor planning, and coordination through purposeful, whole-body movement.

By encouraging spatial awareness and controlled challenge, climbing activities help build core stability and confidence.

These foundational skills are essential for more complex motor tasks and everyday functional movement. Used therapeutically, climbing allows the brain and body to work together in a way that supports coordination, regulation, and growth.

Climbing equipment is one of the ways we help children build the physical and neurological foundations for more complex skills.

When a child struggles with focus, coordination, emotional regulation, or sitting still, it’s natural for parents and teachers to look first at behavior. But in many cases, what we’re seeing on the outside is rooted much deeper in the nervous system, particularly in how the brain processes movement and balance.

One system that often gets overlooked in these conversations is the vestibular system. It plays a foundational role in how a child feels in their body and how their brain organises information.

As Dr. Melillo explains, different parts of the brain play different roles in how we interpret the world.

The left hemisphere is heavily involved in internal narratives and interpretation, it fills in gaps and creates meaning.

The right prefrontal cortex plays a critical role in reality testing, constantly checking, “Is this real or not?”

When left-brain networks become overly dominant and suppress that right-brain reality-checking system, the brain can lose its ability to accurately distinguish internal experience from external reality. That loss of reality testing is what defines psychosis from a neurological standpoint.

Understanding this helps explain why these conditions are rooted in brain network imbalance, not character, willpower, or personal failure.

At Brain Hub Kids the Melillo Method Australia, we focus on understanding how brain systems develop, interact, and get back in balance.

Eye movements can tell us a great deal about how the balance system is functioning. Video Nystagmography (VNG) tracks eye movements to assess the vestibular system, which plays a key role in balance and coordination.

By evaluating both central and peripheral vestibular pathways, VNG helps us identify issues that may affect spatial awareness, coordination, and stability.

This testing provides essential information for understanding how the balance system is working and allows us to guide care with greater precision.

VNG is one of the tools we use to support a comprehensive, brain-based approach to vestibular care.

Spinning activates the vestibular system, the brain’s balance and regulation centre.
When kids spin slowly and safely, it helps improve body awareness, focus, and emotional control.

That’s why movement like spinning, rocking, and rolling can feel so calming for some kids. It’s not random behaviour it’s the nervous system looking for balance.

Try it at home:
Spin for ten seconds one way, pause, then 10 seconds the other way.
You may notice calmer behaviour almost straight away.

Understanding the Melillo Method: The Melillo Method is a treatment model for children with neurological and developmental difficulties that's rooted in functional neurology.

Brain function is deeply connected to body systems, which is why the Melillo Method utilizes sensory-motor activities and cognitive stimulation to create more balanced neurological function, increasing the brain's ability to process and integrate information.

Brain Hub Kids is a licensed Melillo Method centre in Australia and we personalise our approach to fit the needs of every child we work with.

Parents often ask a very reasonable question when learning about primitive reflexes:

Are retained primitive reflexes the cause of ADHD, autism, or sensory processing disorder or are they something that exists alongside these diagnoses? And does reflex integration actually help?

The short answer is nuanced, and that nuance matters.

Primitive reflexes are not a diagnosis.
They are a developmental marker, one piece of a much larger neurological picture.

Understanding how they relate to neurodevelopmental conditions can help families make more informed, grounded decisions about support. Read more 👇

When people hear the word depression, they’re often told it’s a chemical imbalance. But as Dr. Melillo explains, that description misses what’s really happening in the brain.

From a neurological perspective, depression reflects an imbalance between brain networks.

The right prefrontal cortex is more involved in emotions like sadness, guilt, shame, and self-criticism.

The left frontal regions are more involved in motivation, joy, confidence, and positive emotional drive.

When activity is too strong on the right and underactive on the left, the emotional system becomes weighted toward sadness and hopelessness and that pattern can become reinforced over time.

Understanding this matters, because it points toward what actually needs to change.

At Brain Hub Kids a Licensed Melillo Method Centre, we always look at brain development, timing, and functional balance not just symptoms.
