Here are 3 foods to improve your brain function:

Eggs
Rich in choline, which helps produce acetylcholine, essential for memory and learning.

Fatty fish (like salmon)
High in DHA, an omega-3 fat that supports brain cell structure and communication.

Pumpkin seeds
Packed with magnesium and zinc, key for nervous system regulation and protecting the brain.

These small, consistent choices can have a real impact on focus, mood, and cognitive function over time.

If you’re looking to support brain health through nutrition, it starts with the right strategy.

Dr. Carlo Rinaudo joins Dr. Robert Melillo + Xen to unpack what’s really driving focus, emotional regulation, and development in kids.

Most parents are told to manage behaviour.
But behaviour is an output and you can’t change it until you understand what’s happening in the brain and address that first.

In this conversation, they cover:
• Brain imbalance (beyond “left vs right”)
• Why movement + the vestibular system is foundational
• How screens + modern life are shaping development
• Neurological immaturity vs misdiagnosis
• Simple daily strategies to support your child

If your child refuses the exercises, melts down, or shuts down… you’re not alone.

And you’re not doing it wrong.

This is one of the most common things parents experience, especially with kids who are ADHD, autistic, or sensory-sensitive.

When a child resists, it’s usually not behaviour.

It’s their nervous system saying, “This is too much.”

Reflex work targets very early brain development, so if a child becomes overwhelmed, the brain simply can’t integrate.

That’s why one rule matters most:

Regulation comes before integration.

What often works better is doing less, not more.

Shorter sessions.
Doing it together.
Showing instead of telling.
Stopping before frustration.

When the nervous system feels safe, progress usually speeds up.

This is the approach we use at the Melillo Method Australia Centre to support autism, ADHD, communication delays, and child development.

That 3–5pm crash?
Low energy, irritability, poor focus… it’s something I see all the time.

And most of the time, it comes back to blood sugar earlier in the day.

When meals are high in refined carbs and low in protein or fibre, blood sugar rises quickly… then drops just as fast a few hours later.

That drop can lead to:
• Fatigue
• Cravings
• Brain fog
• Poor concentration

The fix isn’t more caffeine.
It’s building meals that keep your energy stable from the start of the day.

If this sounds familiar, it’s something we can work through together.

😤 When your child can’t calm down, it’s a brain–body connection that’s struggling to regulate emotion.

The vagus nerve is the body’s built-in calming switch.
It connects the brain to the heart, lungs, and gut and when it’s underactive, emotions can spill over fast.

Simple activities like humming, singing a low “mmmm,” or gargling water create gentle vibrations that help activate this nerve and calm the nervous system quickly.

These tools are especially helpful during transitions or before bedtime, when emotions tend to run high.

There are multiple things that can mimic ADHD in kids and many parents don’t realise it.

If your child struggles to focus, regulate, or sit still, this might give you a different perspective.

If you’ve ever wondered, “is this ADHD or something else?”, you’re not alone. Many parents notice their child struggling with focus, impulsivity, emotional outbursts, or constant movement and ADHD is often the first label suggested. But here’s what’s important: ADHD-like behaviours don.....

One of the most confronting assumptions we make is equating speech with intelligence.

As Dr. Melillo shares, many non-speaking children may have far more understanding than they’re able to express. In some cases, when alternative communication methods are supported, their thoughts, ideas, and awareness can be far more advanced than people expect.

The challenge isn’t always what they know, it’s their ability to access and express it.

From a neurological perspective, this often comes back to disconnection between brain networks involved in language, motor control, and body awareness. When those systems aren’t working together, communication becomes difficult even if comprehension is there.

That’s why at Brain Hub Kids, the Melillo Method Australia Centre, the focus is on improving how the brain and body connect, helping children access communication in whatever way is possible for them.

Neuronutrition looks at how nutrition directly impacts brain function.

We focus on:
• Blood sugar stability
• Nutrient deficiencies
• Gut health
• Inflammation

Because all of these influence neurotransmitters, brain energy, and how the gut and nervous system communicate.

When the brain has the right fuel and environment, therapy, learning, and recovery become much easier.

If you’re looking to support brain function from the inside out, this is where it starts.

Many children who struggle, including non-speaking autistic children, are often misunderstood.

It’s not always a lack of intelligence.

It can be a lack of communication between brain networks.

When the right and left sides of the brain aren’t working together efficiently, a child may understand far more than they can express.

This is why some children are labelled “low functioning,” yet show awareness, emotion, and understanding that doesn’t match the label.

When the brain is supported properly and new ways of communicating are introduced, something powerful can happen.

Children begin to express thoughts, emotions, and ideas that were always there.

The issue was never intelligence.

It was access.

When we shift from asking “what’s wrong?” to “how is the brain wired?” everything changes.

Your gut and brain are constantly communicating.
This is what we call the gut–brain axis.

Your gut microbiome helps produce neurotransmitters like serotonin and GABA, and sends signals to the brain through the vagus nerve and immune system.

So when the gut is inflamed, imbalanced, or not functioning well, it can show up as:
• Low mood
• Poor focus
• Changes in behaviour

That’s why when we look at brain health, we also need to look at gut health.

If you’re looking to support both, it starts with understanding what’s happening internally.

“Why does my child wake up at night?” We hear this every week.

The answer is often deeper than sleep routines and understanding it can completely change how you approach it.

Here’s what the gut, blood sugar, and brain have to do with it.

Read the full blog on our website. 👇

If you’ve been asking, “why does my child wake up at night?”, you’re not alone. Many children who struggle with focus, behavior, or emotional regulation during the day also struggle with sleep. But sleep issues are rarely just about routine. They’re often linked to the nervous system, gut ...

Between 12 and 18 months, children should begin showing joint attention, pointing to share interest, looking back and forth between you and an object, smiling as if to say, “Did you see that?”

As Dr. Melillo explains, this isn’t just social behaviour. It reflects how language, social, and brainstem networks are organising.

A common red flag during this stage is when a child pulls your hand to get something instead of pointing or making eye contact. That can signal a delay in social communication development.

Early changes in joint attention can shift a child’s developmental trajectory, which is why noticing it matters.

In the third edition of Disconnected Kids, Dr. Melillo explains why this milestone is so important, what may be happening neurologically when it’s missed, and how families can take practical steps early.

Awareness in the first 18 months can make a lasting difference.
