🌿 This is Birth. 🌿
Birth Trauma Awareness Week 2025
“This is Birth” is the theme this year, a powerful reminder that birth is profound. It is tender, raw, and transformative. It can be ecstatic, and it can carry deep wounds.
At She Births®, we believe it’s time to hold space for the whole truth of birth. Not to frighten or sensationalise, but to honour the real experiences of so many families.
Birth trauma can arise from many sources:
✨ Unexpected interventions or outcomes
✨ Feeling unheard, dismissed, or disrespected
✨ Fear, pain, loss of control
✨ Disconnection from body and baby
Trauma is not “weakness.” It is our body and heart’s honest response to what felt unsafe.
This week can bring a lot to the surface. Tenderness. Discomfort. Grief. Even the pressure to participate. The fear that silence means you haven’t healed, or that advocacy requires visibility.
Please know: It’s okay to be vocal. It’s okay to be quiet. It’s okay to be still.
Healing doesn’t have to be public. Your experience is valid, no matter how you choose to share it—or not.
We stand with every parent carrying these memories.
We see you. We honour you.
We also stand for change. For respectful, informed, compassionate care. For education that empowers families. For birth experiences that are as safe, gentle, and connected as possible, whatever the outcome.
This is birth: beautiful, complex, real. Let’s talk about it. Let’s support each other. Let’s heal.
💛 If you need support, know you’re not alone. Resources are available. We’re here to help you prepare, debrief, heal, and find your power again.

Motherhood is a transformative process of self-discovery. Could it be an initiation to self?
I was recently interviewed for a documentary that focuses on the profound transition of motherhood - emphasising a mother’s journey.
It was wonderful to share wisdom gathered over these last 20 years of being with so many women and a bit of my personal story too with inspiring psychoanalyst / filmmaker, Indigo Melrose.
She Births is a perfect fit for their narrative, especially as we help mothers reconnect with themselves both as women, and as mothers.
I am so looking forward to hearing from some of the other voices from and more. Stay tuned.
Did motherhood help you discover more of who you really are?

✨Affirmations aren’t just words - they can be a powerful tool to help us connect mind and body.
They help us remember that we are embodied power during birth. That we also have the ability to soften and let go.
At She Births® we recommend working with affirmations during rest but also when the going gets tough - and highly recommend that style of practice during pregnancy.
SAVE this post for later. We will some more later too.⬇️
Whether you're in deep rest or moving through a contraction, using affirmations creates a potent shift in mind and energy. 🌀💪
Say them when it feels hard. Say them when it feels easy.
Because how we speak to ourselves matters.
💬 What’s your favourite affirmation right now? Drop it below — we’d love to hear 💖👇

C-Section birth 😍 Where agency creates beauty, calm, connection and empowerment
After a partial placental abruption, this mum kept her baby growing for weeks - living in the hospital so she could be close to the OR if needed. Finally, she reached full term, and after several days of gently attempting to induce labour…she and her team collectively made the decision to have a gentle cesarean birth.
Dim lights, music playing, calm and quiet providers. It was beautiful and so very moving…especially when this beautiful baby took their first breath after so many weeks of hoping and praying and uncertainty.
Cesarean birth may not always be our first plan, but there is so much strength, beauty, and courage in these stories.

Today, on National Sorry Day, we pause to acknowledge the deep pain and injustice suffered by First Nations peoples - and the strength, wisdom, and resilience that continues to rise from it.
We recognise the privilege that we hold now and the responsibility we carry to listen, to learn, and to honour the sacred traditions - especially of Indigenous birthing. These practices carry knowledge that has sustained life on this land for tens of thousands of years. Thank you for this image and the pioneering birth work you do
We stand in solidarity and deep respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander mothers, families, and birth workers. May we walk together toward truth, healing, and justice.
At She Births® we are always learning and grateful for all indigenous teachings shared. Tune into our podcast archive and listen to conversation with - about starting to decolonise our minds.

Funny and true - 💪🏽 Partners do birth too.
When partners dive into the She Births® Course they are stoked!
It’s not just about learning techniques and knowing what to do and how to help - it’s about showing up with calm presence. From breathwork to massage, acupressure to active birth positions - partners are stepping up to be true anchors in birth and beyond.
We’ve seen it time and again: a calm, informed partner can completely change the birth experience. For the better.
✨ Whether it was holding you through contractions, reminding you of your breath, or being the steady hand postpartum…
We’d love to know - How did your partner show up for you during pregnancy, birth or after?
Tag them below or share your story 💬👇
Let’s celebrate supportive partners and inspire the next wave of conscious dads.

Let’s talk VERNIX! How much was your babe born with?
Some babies are born with a lot, and some with hardly any.
Vernix is that white, waxy substance covering a newborn’s skin. It acts as a protective barrier in utero and a lubricant during labor - but it also provides key benefits after birth.
This incredible coating contains immune-protecting oils, it helps regulate temperature, and even inoculates babies with healthy bacteria from the birth canal if born vaginally.
So, how long should you wait to bathe your baby? Research shows that waiting 24-48 hours for the vernix to absorb can be highly protective.
So, you can skip the baby wash and lotion on your newborn. If you do use anything, go for natural, fragrance-free products.
And here’s a tip for new parents: avoid using strongly scented soaps on yourself in those early days as well. Babies are comforted by your natural scent, which helps them bond before their eyesight further develops.

I’m a mother, childbirth educator, doula and have been a prenatal yoga teacher for over 20 years. I am the director of The Birthing Institute and creator of the She Births® program.
She Births® is a holistic, evidence-based birth course for pregnant couples that I developed within my local community of Bondi Beach, Sydney. Since its humble beginnings, She Births® has now grown into an internationally recognised, and scientifically verified, birth course that has been completed by thousands of expecting parents around the world.
When my son was born I have to say, like many women do, the experience of labour shocked me! Even after 12 weeks of birth education I felt like my partner and I were not prepared to navigate the intensity and complexity of birth, or, for the challenges that came along afterwards.
After many years of attending births, and influenced by my medically trained family, I became inspired to develop a comprehensive birth course that makes a real difference.
Although the statistics show that She Births® is the most successful program in the world for improving birth outcomes, it arose purely from a deep desire to improve the quality of people’s lives and support new families – and for me, the biggest success of She Births® is that we empower couples to create a beautiful birth experience, no matter what unfolds.
