Why do toddlers not slow down even when they are unwell.

It’s like they have this hidden button that they press when they are unwell that exerts this strange amount of energy and they LOVE to spead the LOVE.

I truly believe that we are born with this will to survive and do exactly what we want in life at no cost even when we are unwell and it isn’t until someone tells us otherwise that we begin to question ourselves.

So I decided even with a nice flu to solider on. This isn’t to mean to say not to rest (not at all) but its to say – keep doing what you love, find something you would love to do to make you feel better even with a crazy toddler.

Hide in the shower or bathroom and really think

💭 What would I love to do? And how can I do it? 💕

Pushing yourself even when it’s rough is when it means the most.

EJ and I have both been battling a very similar cold this week. Today she was level 10 difficult and I had work to do.

Most days it would just break me and I’d just want to chill and get away. Today I decided to just get it done. Because I put myself first, because my dreams and my goals are bigger.

Start putting yourself first so that you can start to feel less overwhelmed by the mundane

When was the last time you stopped and smelt the 🌺 or just felt free and innocent.

As a mum 👩 you feel responsible for creating so many activities and opportunities for your kids that you end up feeling sad and alone and guilt any time you work towards your goals.

We get swept up in trying to entertain our kids at every second cause they “need” constant stimulation (not true) that we forget about ourselves.

What if I told you that you by putting yourself first you create more opportunities for yourself and your family and honestly have just so much more fun doing so. 🎉

Don’t get caught up in what everyone around you is telling you to do. Start putting yourself first🏆

And smile, laugh and enjoy the little moments with your family.

🐶What do you want to achieve in life?
🐈 How is that going to benefit you and your family?

🐪 ps I’m not talking about self care days (yes nice but they aren’t going to get you long standing results)

Emilia’s never been amazing at swim school. Most of her journey has been an element of reservation and fear with plenty of tears.

Yesterday, she began lessons on her own without a parent. We initially hesitated but then decided let’s push and see.

Instead of just going about the usual routine,I planted the seed with her 3 days beforehand. I told her what she was in for to reduce her FEARS and gave her every bit of INFORMATION that I could.

And guess what!!! She surprised us all and enjoyed her lesson.

We are only afraid of the unknown, once we have all the INFORMATION we are no longer fearful and can tackle our challenges.

This holds true for us all as we go into new stages of our lives. Whether it’s becoming a mother, a child needing to tackle something new or an adult facing our next challenge or goals.

Next time you are afraid - fill in the gaps.

I saw a controversial post today on Mum’s filling from an empty cup and how we can still do so.

I also SEE a lot and hear a lot of burnt out mums talking about needing some sort of SELF CARE.

Whether that’s a night off from the kids, a spa day, massage, nail treatment etc and whilst I totally see value in that and definitely crave that also (wouldn’t be human or a mum if I didn’t) what happened to self care involve working through your own mental challenges and generational trauma.

When did we lose sight of what SELF CARE really is especially as a mum. When did we forget as my mentor mentions that we can have it all.

When was the last time you felt truly inspired from within or had worked through some generational trauma or even just your own trauma so that it didn’t affect your relationship with your kids.

When was the last time you sat down and thought about what you would love to have and do for yourself that increased your self worth.

Doing the work on yourself and figuring out what you would love to do is so far greater than any self care treatment and it lasts a life time. And I promise you can do it even whilst being a mum.

Challenge

As a parent, how do you challenge your child every day to be the best version on themselves? How do you inspire them?

As parents I believe we are our children’s first source of mentorship to guide them on a path of what they want to do in life. As mentors we need to be harsh at times and challenge them whilst also being there to support them when they fall.

A lot of people fall into the category of being too exhausted, tap out and follow a discipline reward straight. Why?

I believe it’s due to their own challenges that they are facing mentally that they are struggling to deal with or work through and are trying to handle everything on their own. The trauma of how they were raised pushes through or just the anxiety of every day challenges building to overwhelm.

The way above it and to be the mentor you’d love to be for your children is to work through your own mental challenges, get a coach, don’t fear the unknown and push through those barriers to become the parent you’d love to be but not only that the person you’d love to be.

A client once told me that they could be themselves whilst they had small kids to raise. The moment she put herself first her children began to shine more than they ever had before.

I was at Emilia’s gym class this morning and another mum commented on how well she climbed for her age.

She’s been attending since she was 7 months. It was her son’s second class and he just wasn’t into it at all. He was older than Emilia and she asked me whether she should continue or wait till he showed signs he would be ready.

Here’s the thing, what if he never shows signs? Do we stop pushing our kids or even ourselves due to not showing signs of being ready. If that was the case we’d do nothing. I am definitely a testament of that. The times I stop learning and growing and challenging myself I stop and when I do the hard things and push, new opportunities arise.

There are no signs of readiness, in ourselves or in our kids. Now I’m not saying push for something you hate or not interested in. But I’m saying push to try.

Challenge yourself and your kids to do hard things. You will never know unless you try. And finally don’t compare your journey to anyone else’s. It’s your journey to take.

I drove past my old high school today and saw the girls filing out as it was right on school finish time.

My mind quickly went down memory lane of all the great moments I had on that campus. I truly enjoyed most of high school.

But it was funny, today I drove past and for the first time I didn’t feel sad or even really nostalgic.

I felt this sense of excitement. Excitement for all the opportunities I get to now offer and experience with my kids.

As a mum I feel like my most important job is to help my daughter open up as many doors that she wants to and challenging her every day to be a better person and to step up and to do the things she loves no matter what.

But I can only do so by truly reading her and understanding her values and what she wants in life. Yes she’s only 2 but it starts from birth.

I was at the shopping centre the other day buying Emilia her 2nd babycino for the day.

Another mum with her 4 month old looked at me and smiled. We started chatting and she had just gotten out of the trenches of the newborn stage.

She comments and mentions to me about how hard and lonely those first four months were for her. And she’s right, its such an unknown, so different to anything that you ever knew before. A complete change in identity and almost a grieving process of who you once were.

But you don’t get a chance to grieve right as you have this tiny baby that needs all your attention.

The thing is, if you don’t adapt and work through that grief it will consistently consume you. Becoming a mum takes on a new set of challenges and changes you into the next version of you. Its not a grieving process but it’s an evolution process and it’s about figuring out the new version of you.

There is a light at the end of the tunnel and it’s about working through that grief, working on who you would love to be and working towards that. The beauty of becoming a mum is that it gives you a break or pause point from your previous life and gives you a chance to reassess what you want to do next.

And remember you are never alone, reach out there are so many of us that have been where you are today.

Are your kids always getting sick?

What I’m seeing in the my community is Winter arrives and our babies and toddlers start to get UnWELL. After a few days of pain relief and bubs not getting better we then head to the drs and are either told one of a few things.

Wait it out, HERE’s a steroid or HERE’s an antibiotic.

As parents all we want is to see our HEALTHY bubbly kid so we go out and take whatever the drs have given us.

However what if I told you there was a better way. Or at least a way to improve our kids health.

Obviously NOT to go against medical advice but more a way to improve our kids health so that they aren’t going from Dr to Dr.

A tool kit that every parent can have in their pantry or fridge that they can use daily throughout the year and also acutely for when our babies start to get run down.

Some of my tools in my tool kit. And these are high quality items not your generic chemist warehouse products

🌞 Vitamin C preferably liposol
🌞 Bee Propolis Throat spray (for us parents when you notice the little ones getting sick
🌞 Cod liver oil
🌞 Manuka honey
🌞 All natural chest rub
🌞 Bone Broth or chicken soup
🌞 Oranges If in season
🌞 homeopath kit
🌞 collagen peptides for extra tasteless protein

Having products at home ready for you when your little ones starts to get sick is honestly gold and it means you can get on top of things quickly and prevent them from escalating. I always have these in my home and I’ve noticed a drastic reduction in the length of illness especially for our Emilia.

Teething for our little ones is hard work. Hard work for us parents but also for our little ones.

You feel for them as they go through the pain of growing those teeth and having them erupt and I know like all parents we want to take that pain away.

There are many ways to do so outside of using constant paracetamol. has a set of stories on why to minimise panadol and she explains it way better than I ever could. For teething we offer cold wash clothes for bubs to chew on, teething toys, frozen breastmilk and if established on solids one of my favourites was frozen berries in one of these mesh holders or frozen carrot and celery sticks.

If you need a bit more to take the edge off some of my favourite products are the Braur Teething Liquid (not the gel) and the Weleda teething powder. We used a combination of both when EJ was teething and never needed to use panadol.

Both will be available on our website shortly as well as a more indepth ebook on our favourite swaps.

Does your little one love a ‘special drink’ or a smoothie?

Here’s a recipe to get all the good nutrients into their little bodies.

1 cube of frozen spinach
¼ cup of ice
½ a cup of fresh or frozen banana
½ a cup of milk of your choice (preference is cows if tolerated)
3 scoops collagen peptides
1 tablespoon chia seeds (optional)

What is your favourite smoothie in your family?

Ps. We have collagen peptides online if you are looking for a recommendation

What’s some simple swaps you can make in your home to start to aid in improving your health and wellbeing?

These are some of my non-negotiables at home that can easily be swapped.

Vegetable oils are highly toxic and inflammatory, if it was up to me I would have them removed from all homes. The simplest and cheapest swap would be swapping with EVOO or butter.

Supermarket breads have so many ingredients in them. The white flour, preservatives and flavours to keep them fluffy and fresh. Swap them out and find a local sourdough baker.

Tap or bottled water for filtered water. This is something we need to delve into deeper at one stage, but our water is full of chlorine, fluoride, toxins and chemicals not to mention the plastic particles. Try to filter your water.

Table salt for sea salt flakes. Table salt is highly refined and has added ingredients to it sometimes including anti caking agents. For optimal electrolytes absorption we need good quality salt in our systems. Making the switch has become much easier with the options now at our local supermarkets.

Do you think you could make these simple swaps?

Stay tuned as I have more swaps to share that will help you on this journey.
If there's anything you want to know the best swap for, let me know in the comments and I will be sure to share.

Wipes are important too and not all are created equally.
Most also do not disclose their ingredient lists which I don’t agree with.

Again when looking at wipes, I look at the ones that have the most natural ingredients and avoid those with unrecognisable ingredients.

Let’s face it, we use these daily on our babies most sensitive areas so they need to be the best.

I found Waterwipes are most commonly used, however look at these ingredients.

Waterwipes Ingredients: water (Aqua) (99.9%), citrus grandis (grapefruit) seed extract, benzalkonium chloride

I simply do not love these wipes. The Grapefruit seed extract is not derived from a natural source. It is derived from multiple solvents to create the extract, one being benzalkonium chloride which has been proven to cause health issues.

My favourite alternative are the water wipes or Tooshies which we will soon have available on our website.

Lets swap this for that!

Did you feel overwhelmed with cloth nappies but wanted to use the best option on your little one's skin?

I felt the same when EJ was born, so I researched the best disposable nappies and I'm here to share!

Huggies may be the most convenient on the shelf nappies but they have the following ingredients in them;
wood pulp, sodium polyacrylate, polypropylene, polyethylene, adhesives, polyester, polyurethane elastics, polyolefin elastic, colour changing wetness indicator, colorants, and printing inks.

There are so many red flags in this ingredient list but there's also the ingredients that they are not sharing too.
For example what ingredients make the colour changing wetness indicator?
What ingredients make up the colourants and the printing inks?
So many hidden nasties as well.
Not to mention that due to the high absorbency rates these nappies have, babies and toddlers do not feel wet or recognise when they have soiled themselves which can cause issues later on when toilet training.

Instead of using huggies the best accessible and disposable nappies are Tooshies and here's why;
Tooshies are free from fragrances, phthalates, parabens, chlorine, latex, formaldehyde, toxic inks and alcohol.
They have not caused excess rashes on my daughter's skin and allow her sensitive areas to breathe as freely as they can.
Stay tuned as Tooshies will be available online at akesonatural.com soon!

Something simple but often forgotten is protein sources and filling up on enough of it to keep us full and to help our little ones grow throughout the day. As much as I love getting veggies into Emilia, I have a huge emphasis on protein, whether it’s eggs for breakfast or snacking on jerky throughout the day. Protein keeps us all fuller for longer. What’s your favourite protein source.
