Hypnotic suggestibility in dissociative and related disorders: A meta-analysis ⬇️

Key Insights on Hypnotherapy and Dissociative Disorders Research

Recent findings reveal that patients with dissociative disorders (DDs),
trauma- and stressor-related disorders (TSDs), and functional neurological
disorder (FND) exhibit significantly higher levels of hypnotic
suggestibility compared to control groups.

* Dissociative Disorders show the most pronounced effect, indicating a stronger response to hypnosis.
* These findings enhance our understanding of the mechanisms and risk factors associated with these conditions, highlighting the therapeutic potential of hypnotherapy in treatment.

Explore how hypnotherapy can be beneficial for individuals dealing with trauma and dissociation!

Emerging neuroscience is continuing to validate what many clinicians see every day …. hypnotherapy works.

A recent research review by Menon & Bhagat highlights that hypnosis is not just a subjective experience, but a measurable, structured neurocognitive process. Using tools like fMRI and EEG, studies show distinct patterns of brain activity and connectivity during hypnosis, particularly in areas responsible for attention, emotional regulation, perception, and self-awareness.

What’s especially compelling is how these brain changes translate into real clinical outcomes. The research links hypnotic processes with effective results in pain management, anxiety reduction, and behaviour change — demonstrating that hypnotherapy operates through identifiable brain–body mechanisms, not just suggestion alone.

From a modern healthcare perspective, hypnotherapy can be understood as a method of guiding the brain’s top-down processes — helping reshape perception, regulate emotions, and support behavioural shifts. This positions it as a powerful complementary therapy alongside traditional psychological and medical treatments.

Overall, the evidence points to hypnotherapy as a scientifically grounded, mechanism-driven approach with growing relevance in neuroscience and clinical practice. As research continues to evolve, its role in supporting neuroplasticity and improving patient outcomes is becoming increasingly clear.

At the Australian Hypnotherapists Association, we see supervision as a cornerstone of ethical, effective practice.

Behind every skilled practitioner is a commitment to ongoing reflection, learning, and professional support. Supervision offers a dedicated space to explore challenges, celebrate progress, and ensure that every client interaction is approached with clarity, care, and integrity.

It’s not just about professional growth — it’s about responsibility.

Through supervision, hypnotherapists strengthen their clinical skills, stay aligned with best practice, and uphold the highest standards of client safety and wellbeing. The result? More grounded practitioners and more consistent, positive outcomes for those seeking support.

Because when practitioners are supported, clients are better supported too.

🌺 ANZAC Day 2026 🌺

Today, we pause to remember, reflect, and honour the courage, sacrifice, and enduring spirit of all who have served.

On this day, we acknowledge the bravery of our veterans—past and present—and the profound impact their service has had on the lives we live today. Their resilience, mateship, and commitment continue to inspire generations.

At the Australian Hypnotherapists Association, we also recognise the importance of supporting the mental health and wellbeing of those who have served. Healing, in all its forms, matters.

Lest we forget.

At the Australian Hypnotherapists Association, we believe supervision is not just beneficial…it’s essential!

Supervision strengthens professional practice. It provides a space for reflection, guidance, and ongoing learning, helping practitioners refine their skills, stay accountable, and continue growing with confidence.

But more importantly, supervision directly supports safer, more effective therapy. It ensures that client care remains thoughtful, ethical, and evidence-informed — enhancing outcomes and supporting the overall health and wellbeing of those we serve.

Stronger practitioners. Safer practice. Better client outcomes.

That’s the power of quality supervision.

Exciting news for hypnotherapy!

One of our AHA members, also a veteran himself, has created a powerful new collaboration with Valour Health, supporting veterans in the wider community.

After a successful meeting with their Practice Manager, hypnotherapy is now being featured as part of their integrated healthcare approach.

Filming has already taken place for their website and social media, including a new
“Ask the Hypnotherapist” segment to educate and engage the public.

This is a meaningful step forward in the acceptance and integration of hypnotherapy within mainstream healthcare.

The future is integrated, and hypnotherapy is definitely a part of it!

Congratulations Jerry Knight 👍🏻
Fabulous work!
