4 SCIENCE BASED reasons to read before bed (save and share!) šŸ™šŸ™šŸ™

1. Reading can decrease cognitive arousal; helping your brain unwind after a busy day. For those who are on the go, this is extremely beneficial - in order to go into restful deep sleep, you need to have a middle ground between the busy-ness of your thinking day, and the quietness of sleep.. biologically, reading is a helpful pathway, and does not stimulate the brain like social media, for example

2. Reading can give you an alternative activity to your social media scroll. Often this is intertwined with distraction from the day past or the one ahead (see below); however, as social media / TV is so engaging (especially social media), rewarding and activating for our dopamine reward pathway; this can keep you awake longer than you’d like - e.g. those watching TV in the last hour before bed are 52% more likely to take over an hour to fall asleep.

2. Reading can detract from mental rumination, aka the endless thought loop in your head. This often arises when we are left with ā€˜nothing’ to think about; and can contribute to anxiety, restlessness and seeking distraction, which is often via social media

3. Reading can reduce stress by 68%, as noted in a University of Sussex study, with the effects starting in 6 minutes. This finding is extremely valuable... because stress is an omnipresent, overwhelming experience for many of us - self included - and can leave you feeling wide awake when you are meant to be asleep.

Thank you to for co-creating this; helping our community thrive with sleep support! If you’re looking for a new mattress, check them out - from personal experience, 10/10!

So proud that last week, Sleep Awareness Week, I shared expert sleep advice with millions upon millions (really); featuring on Sky News Australia, Ticker TV AU, The Australian, The Daily Telegraph, Women’s Health, News Corp Australia’s Body and Soul, 2GB radio, Lifehacker Australia, Daily Mail News, Nine News and more.

In a single week. SINGLE WEEK.

For me, this is absolute gold - recognising the importance of consistency, repetition and omnipresence for maximum engagement, results and impact; this means that regardless of which platform - TV, radio, digital media, print media, social media - the nation was being educated around the importance of sleep (physically, mentally, emotionally); empowered with easy to action, achievable strategies, and reminded, on a daily basis, to take action... now!

With 73% of Aussies sleeping less than 8 hours, and 4 in 5 proactively seeking sleep solutions....

I am genuinely proud to be such a powerful part of the change, amplify awareness, accelerate action.

SLEEP BETTER - FEEL BETTER - LIVE BETTER.

I truly believe this, and I truly believe that when provided with expert advice, science based strategies and long term structure; we achieve this and so much more.

What a time to be alive! Best thing is..... my work here is JUST-GETTING-STARTED!

3 REASONS YOU CANT SLEEP - SAVE AND SHARE šŸ™ā€Ø
1. Alcohol
Alcohol suppresses REM sleep, the deep sleep stage in the last third of the night. As a result, after alcohol - even one glass counts - we often experience sleep interruptions after 3am, when REM sleep dominates. And yes, the more alcohol you have, and the closer it is to bedtime; the worse it is for your sleep!

Solutions: find alcohol free activities you enjoy (walking on a balmy evening - my FAVORITE), opt for low / alcohol free options when you are out, avoid situations you are tempted to drinkĀ

2. Excessive caffeineĀ
Many Aussies love an afternoon coffee - and if taken after 2pm ,this can severely compromise sleep. As caffeine suppresses adenosine, a sleep promoting hormone; and the halflife (length of effect) is 8-10 hours, it means if we indulge in our 3pm pick me up caffeine hit, it’s likely we will struggle to fall asleep that night, and even if we do, we will have lighter sleep.

Solutions: go by the golden rules - 1 coffee before 12pm, then after, opt for low / caffeine free options such as matcha (70mg compared to coffee’s 100mg), black tea (50mg), green tea (30mg), peppermint tea (0mg).

3. Bad mattress
Replacing an old mattress can improve sleep quality by 55% - as noted in a clinical study. Designed to support you, cushion your aches and align your spine, if your mattress is old, had lost it’s structure or wasn’t suitable for you in the first place; this can lead to tossing and turning all night, excessive night time wakings and morning fatigue. I recommend , who have a range of adjustable beds - something that can help 80% sleep better, and are the only beds integrated with in Australia, an infrared textile technology which can also improve sleep quality too.

Solutions: check to see if you sleep better in other rooms / on other mattresses / in hotels - this is a telltale sign yours isn’t right. Highly recommend checking out Seniors Plus; and am happy to share my friends and family code via DM.

Thrilled to team up with global giantĀ  - literally a dream come true! Years ago, when I recorded my audiobook for Bear, Lion, Wolf; I remember thinking - what if one day I collaborated with this global giant, directly?!

Such a phenomenal brand, huge presence - I mean... EVERYONE knows Audible!! Needless to say, when they approached me to support their World Sleep Day campaign; sharing the science behind sleep supportive sounds, I didn’t have to think too hard!

And, an absolute bonus here was that, alongside our media and social media activity, I delivered my hero sleep seminar - Sleep: Your Ultimate Superpower - to their team at HQ, meeting (some of) the brains behind their incredible success.

So grateful - truly!!!

SNEAKPEAK INTO MY KEYNOTE SLEEP YOUR ULTIMATE SUPERPOWER šŸ„‡ … It’s not JUST about having the right STRATEGY. For BEST results, I firmly believe we need three components: support, strategy, structure. This applies to sleep success, and success in general. I highlight this because:

- if you aren’t sleeping well, you probably don’t have all three components

- you may be blaming yourself for lack of success, without realising that you don’t have the necessary triad... and thinking there is something ā€˜wrong’ with you (there’s not)

- you aren’t aware of the importance of all three of these elements for best results, and are simply googling ā€˜help me sleep better’, then applying a bunch of random tips in no particular order with no particular understanding of which is most / least important, how long each takes to reach peak effectivity, best practices for each

- this theory applies for sleep and overall success - and if you think about other areas of your life where things are going well, without a doubt, you will see you have these three - it is the golden triangle!

I share this to raise awareness, remove self blame, help you understand the reasons you may or may not be seeing ā€˜sleep success’.

For those wishing to achieve sleep success, I have a heap of free resources online - videos, checklists, articles - outlining strategies, structure, and giving you expert support (that’s me!). Feel free to reach out with further questions, as I am so happy to help.

Happy birthday Lara! My numero uno wifey for lifey ā¤ļø

Thank you for always being the most caring, thoughtful, flexible and appreciative friend ever.

Thank you for your compassion, wisdom, support and genuineness.

Thank you for understanding, listening, adapting, openness and calmness.

Thank you for being a light in my life, always, consistently, like a stable rock attached to a bobbling balloon (🤣), you help me stay grounded, aligned, on track and aware of truth.

Thank you for all our adventures - Sydney, Byron, Bali, GC; all our 5 hour walks, Platterboards, hour long phone calls, spritz sessions, tottis bread sessions, north bondi fish sessions - all of the sessions.

Thank you for being my best partner in crime, up for fun times like flume and the island and dancing for hours just because.
I am forever grateful to have you in my life, and count my lucky stars you are who you qre, because you are beyond amazing.

It’s been a pleasure to see you evolve into bigger and brighter versions of yourself over the past 6 years, and know your growth mindset will continue to see you grow, develop and transform into even greater versions of you.

So excited for all the experiences ahead and know that I will always be by your side, cheering you on, through good and bad, as you are for me.

Happy birthday honey šŸŽšŸŽŠšŸŽˆšŸ„³āœˆļø
