This week is Speech Pathology Week (25-31 August). It celebrates the diverse ways that people communicate and the important work of speech pathologists.
It also gives us an opportunity to recognise our own speech pathologists, Emma and Amanda, and the important ways they work with patients at Arcadia Pittwater.
Emma and Amanda describe their role as incredibly rewarding, especially when the intensive work that both patient and therapist put in pays off.
They say it’s easy to take for granted the value of being able to perform simple tasks such as communicating clearly or even swallowing food safely.
But for people with varying health needs, these simple tasks can be a great source of frustration, not just for them but also for their families and friends.
At Arcadia Pittwater, our speech pathologists work with a wide range of individuals, including people with Parkinson’s Disease and those with speaking disorders such as aphasia.
“It's always rewarding to see people being able to swallow food and drinks they enjoy safely. And seeing people have improved conversations with family members and friends is also incredibly satisfying,” they say.
This week, during Speech Pathology Week, we celebrate the fact that everyone communicates differently. Whether spoken, signed, digital, or written, communication bridges gaps, fosters meaning and understanding, and strengthens bonds and relationships.
In Australia, an estimated 1.2 million Australians have communication support needs.
Thank you, Emma and Amanda, for your dedication and your important work at Arcadia Pittwater. We celebrate you and all speech pathologists today and every day.
