Final episode of our Core Explained Series 💥
The final layer!! The External Oblique- the twist powerhouse.
The external obliques are key for trunk rotation, side flexion and stabilising through dynamic movement. But they are often a muscle which are over trained or trained with bicycle crunches… why do we choose not to give the exercise out? Often this movement can overwork the hip flexors and strain the neck… so next time you want to train those obliques try these instead!

GC Marathon Recap… “Really enjoyed the first 30km — I came out flying and held a solid pace. Safe to say I wrote some cheques my body couldn’t quite cash 🫣 Had high expectations for myself, and hit the wall hard. It became a battle between my body and mind to get to that finish line. I’m stoked to have shaved 44 minutes off my marathon PB. Proud of this one.” - Seb

Part 3 of our Core Explained Series 🍎
Meet your Internal Obliques – the side-body stabilisers.
These sit just under your external obliques and play a key role in:

- Rotating your trunk towards the same side
- Stabilising your core and pelvis during movement
- Assisting with breath and pressure control
- Working with your deep core to support spinal movement.

We love training them in lengthened, loaded, and controlled ways. In this clip, we’re showing:
1️⃣ A modified side plank to activate and stabilise- easily progressed to a full side plank
Or
2️⃣ A progression: arm-to-knee crunch to build dynamic control and oblique strength

Don’t underestimate the power of slow, deliberate side-body work.

🍬 Treats This Week 🍬

Two common injuries we’ve seen this week in the clinic:

👉 Hip FAI - Pain or pinching at the front of the hip when squatting, running, or sitting? It could be Femoroacetabular Impingement. Caused by extra bone at the hip joint, FAI can lead to stiffness and discomfort with deep movements.

👉 Wry Neck - Woken up with your head stuck to one side and sharp neck pain? Classic wry neck. It’s usually due to a sudden joint or muscle spasm, and cold weather can make it worse. The good news? With the right hands-on treatment and movement, it often settles quickly.
