Did you know we offer Pre and Post natal physiotherapy care and Woman's Pelvic Health Physiotherapy at Waterfront Physiotherapy & Pilates?

If you noticed Lauren away from the clinic last week she was off completing further training in Pelvic health to advance her skills in assessing and treating pain and dysfunctions inside the pelvis!

This in combination with Lauren's musculoskeletal knowledge in management of joint and muscles disorders of the body allows us to care for you to throughout your whole pregnancy journey, onward into motherhood and throughout life!

Common things a womans and pelvic health therapist treat:
* Pelvic pain including sacroiliac joint pain, p***c symphysis pain, coccyx pain.
* Back pain - from head to tail! Including nerve/disc related pain.
* Rib Pain
* Abdominal separation (diastasis re**us abdominis)
* Incontinence , urgency or other urinary/bowel dysfunctions.
* Prolapse (unfortunately not pessary fitting quite yet!)
* Pelvic floor muscle weakness/tearing.
* C-section recovery and scar management.
* Tailored pre and post natal exercise.
* Other musculoskeletal conditions common before and after pregnancy e.g. carpal tunnel syndrome, foot pain, elbow/wrist/thumb/shoulder pain, hip and knee pain and much more!

Of course , many of the conditions are not just isolated to pregnancy. So we do as always cater to the entire population! Please reach out if you have any concerns or are unsure treatment is suitable for your particular condition. We are more than happy to advise or point you in the right direction!

Please note we are still not set up for Pessary fitting and management at the clinic but have great contacts who complete this sort of work if we think you would benefit from this as a treatment option.

Why did I train in this?
Interestingly, a lot of people over the past weeks when I mentioned my upcoming course, have asked why would anyone ever want to train in this (especially when i mentioned some of the training involved internal examination of the pelvic organs?!)

For me it was a series of things. I first developed an interest in sport and musculoskeletal injuries of the pelvic, back , and hip after i was badly injured from a cycling accidents when racing many years ago. I did every course I could, to gather more and more knowledge and skills. I was lucky enough to have a great sports doctor who had a special interest in this field caring for me who invited me to intern in with him and my interest in this complex field only grew!

I then developed an adjacent interest in Pregnancy care and Womans health as pain in these areas can become even more prevalent before and after pregnancy.

Never one to stop wanting to learn more, I found I had all this knowledge about the outside of the body, yet there was still the missing piece of the puzzle, which was what was on the inside of the pelvis! So this is where my Woman's health training has now headed!

Whilst I still love treating the body as a whole, i felt that this was a blank area that not all physiotherapists have knowledge about and it can play a huge part in many conditions and is probably something far less talked about by individuals, yet so meaningful if treated correctly!

Huge congratulations to one of our clients David on his recent ride in the Mudgee classic!

David used to ride with me back in the early days after my bike accidents, and I can remember saying to him that I may not be able to ride the way I used to when I raced in the past but I appreciate just being able to be back able to ride at all!

David shows this drive to a whole other level!

I love this message and so asked if I could share it for others to read as I feel it is a great message for stroke survivors but also I am sure the message will ring true for so many other people injured or just struggling to get back to things they once loved. This is my favourite bit of his message:

“My advice to anyone recovering from stroke? Think about what used to bring you joy before your stroke. Ask yourself if there’s a way you can still do it, even if it means doing it a bit differently. Talk to your doctors, make a plan, and take the steps you need to get back to what you love. That joy is worth fighting for.”

Thank you David for letting me spread your message!

From David, "Last week, I rode 37.5 kilometres in the Mudgee Classic on my recumbent trike, and to be honest, I’m still soaking it all in. This is the first cycling event I have entered since my stroke, and I was definitely a bit anxious at the start. But crossing that finish line and achieving the goals I had set for myself … it was overwhelming, emotional, and something I’ll never forget.

My partner Sonia was there cheering me on, and that made the moment even more special. It’s hard to put into words how much that support meant to me.

Since my stroke, riding my recumbent trike, after no longer being able to ride a normal bike has changed my life in every way; physically, emotionally, and socially. After the stroke, I was scared all the time. I was afraid I might have another one. But now, my blood pressure is down, I’m healthier, and most importantly, I’m not scared anymore.

Cycling has helped me get fitter and stronger and because of that, my walking has improved, walking out in the community without use of any aids such as a walking stick and AFO which I required previously and I feel more confident and get out into the community. I’ve met new people, reconnected with old ones, and my mental and emotional health have improved so much. I like my life now. I set goals, and I achieve them. That sense of purpose keeps me going and keeps me motivated in my therapy sessions.

Fundraising for the Stroke Foundation was also a big part of this journey. I was proud to raise over $600, knowing that it’s going to help others who’ve been impacted by stroke. Every dollar feels like a step forward for all of us.

My advice to anyone recovering from stroke? Think about what used to bring you joy before your stroke. Ask yourself if there’s a way you can still do it, even if it means doing it a bit differently. Talk to your doctors, make a plan, and take the steps you need to get back to what you love. That joy is worth fighting for.

For me, that’s riding. It challenges me, and it’s what helped me get better.
Next stop? The 50km Spring cycle event in Sydney and the The High Country Rail Trail doing 86 km in one day.
I would like to thank my great team that have helped me get to where I am today, you know who you are.

City2Surf was this past weekend, and the Sydney marathon is fast approaching! We thought this would be a good time to post about some run related topics that might interest you if are running in the upcoming Sydney marathon, enjoy participating in ParkRun on the weekend, or if you are wanting to start running.

No matter where you are in your run journey, injuries can occur.

Most running injuries occur:
- In the acceleration and deceleration phase of running.
- On uneven surfaces.
- In relation to your run technique.
- Due to training errors where training load is increased at a rate beyond the means of the body.

Increased training load includes:
- Run frequency (how often you are running).
- Increased distance, duration or speed.
- Changes in surfaces / terrain.

What will increase your risk of sustaining a run injury?
- Muscular fatigue.
- Repetitive load.
- Reduced muscle strength or endurance.
- Reduced muscle flexibility or joint mobility.
- Muscle imbalances.
- Low cadence (foot turnover).
- Poor shock absorption or heavy foot stroke due to technique, inappropriate footwear, or reduced lower limb or pelvic control.

Over the next few weeks, we aim to give you some strategies to help reduce your risk of injury, starting with some warm up and cool down ideas from our physio Alix.

Whilst your long steady pace days, a short walk to start might be suffice to get your joints and muscles warmed up, we still encourage some small mobility exercises to get your body ready for your run. If you are incorporating any speed intervals or sprints in your training, we recommend including some more exercises to prepare the body for the bigger and faster muscle requirements.

As Alix said in the video, your warm up and cool down is individual and depends on your body’s needs, alongside to the demands of the run (the type of run you are going on). If you are feeling any niggles in these drills or in your run, our physios are here to help problem solve, and aid in preventing future injury, especially with an upcoming race day.

Stay tuned for our future run topics. Let us know if you have any questions, and happy running!
