Some children need explicit teaching to remember new words. Explain meanings of words in everyday language. Capture the word and talk about how it is used using toys and items around you. e.g. teach the word slide by saying something like 'the ring slides down the pole. Slide means to move. What else can slide'

Children who have difficulty quickly and accurately thinking of words use lots of pauses in their talking. They use non specific words like 'stuff', 'that', 'doing it'. They describe items rather than using the exact word. They use lots of filler words such as uhmmm. They can be frustrated when you do not understand the message that they are trying to convey.
