Misbehavior is really a way of saying “I need help” when the words will not come. We wouldn’t answer “I need help” with “you’re in big trouble.” We’d say, “I can help. Here I am.” Answer the distress call. This is where true change begins.

🔥 This is a fantastic visual of co-regulation in action!

When a child is distressed and dysregulated - when emotions are high and they can’t find their calm, they need us to be safe and emotionally available adults to help them co-regulate their nervous system.

😭😡😤 When children experience co-regulation during periods of stress - when they are struggling with those “Big Emotions,” they begin to understand and internalize these strategies that we are sharing with them, which sets the foundation for self-soothing, self-regulation and coping skills.
