Pre-birth and induction acupuncture for big babies ----------- https://villagehealing.com.au/pre-birth-and-induction-acu...

Pre-birth and induction acupuncture for big babies ----------- https://villagehealing.com.au/pre-birth-and-induction-acupuncture-for-big-babies/ ----------- Has your obstetrician or midwife told you that your baby is tracking on the big side? Are they recommending early induction, for example at 40 weeks?

Are you wondering if acupuncture could help you?

This is a common situation in our clinic and we're here to help you.

We find that it's common for obstetricians or midwives to recommend that women seek out acupuncture for this exact situation.

Our standard practice for pre-birth acupuncture and induction acupuncture
Our standard practice for labour preparation is informed by research evidence, combined with our clinical experience:

Pre-birth acupuncture from around 37 weeks gestation, once per week
Induction acupuncture* from around 40 weeks onwards, tailored to respond to changes such as cervical dilatation, baby's engagement and baby's position

Our special practice for early medical induction
In cases where:

there's a recommendation for induction before 40+10
the woman would like to avoid induction if possible
there is support from the medical team for induction acupuncture
there is consent from the woman

then we can change this standard practice. We can bring forward the "induction points" to begin using them earlier than 40 weeks.

We can also begin the Pre-birth acupuncture earlier than 37 weeks, using modified protocols.

As with our standard practice, this means we will tailor the treatments to respond to changes, and integrate closely with medical practices such as membrane sweeps.

We often suggest treatments more than once per week, especially when closer to the medical induction date.

Other supports
We like to bring comprehensive support to allow your body and mind to open.

This may include:

teaching you how to do acupressure at home to continue your progress between acupuncture treatments
helping you feel supported to have productive dialogues with your medical providers so it feels like you have all the support in your corner and everyone's on your team with you
personalising your acupuncture treatments to also help with sleep, anxiety, muscular pain or other issues

Getting started

If you're ready to book in and get started, please head to our Bookings page. You can book online or fill in the form and we'll get back to you as soon as possible.
If you'd like to find out more, then please feel welcome to book a Free 15-minute Consultation using our Booking Request Form, to speak with one of our practitioners about your unique situation.

We look forward to supporting you towards your best birth.

* We use the term "induction acupuncture" because that's how it's widely known. Technically, acupuncture belongs in the same category as membrane sweeps, colostrum expressing and so on. Helpful and shown to have a helpful and meaningful effect - however, for a method to be called an "induction" method, it needs to bring on labour in most women who use it, within a certain window of time. Only some of the medical methods could be truly known as "induction" methods.

With acupuncture, we use "pre-birth" and "induction" to show that they are different protocols. Pre-birth protocols usually include only one or two acupoints that are "forbidden" earlier in pregnancy. The points are forbidden because of their potential to stimulate the uterus, relax the cervix and pelvis and so on. Whereas induction acupuncture usually includes a wide range of forbidden points or strategies.

Do you have a big baby and your obstetrician or midwife is recommending early medical induction? This is a common situation in our acupuncture clinic and we're here to help you. Induction acupuncture is often recommended by medical providers for women who'd like to avoid induction if possible, and w...

Anxiety and excessive sweating: how acupuncture can help ----------- https://villagehealing.com.au/anxiety-and-excessive-sweating-how-acupuncture-can-help/ ----------- Anxiety and excessive sweating: Western and Chinese views and how acupuncture can help
Excessive sweating, especially during moments of anxiety, can be a distressing and confusing symptom. You may find yourself sweating more than usual, even when you're not physically exerting yourself or in a hot environment. Let’s break down why this happens, how Chinese Medicine views it, and how acupuncture can offer relief.

Western medical perspective: Anxiety and excessive sweating
Excessive sweating, also known as hyperhidrosis, is a common anxiety symptom, especially when it happens outside of normal triggers like heat or physical exertion. Here's how it occurs:

Overactive sympathetic nervous system: Anxiety activates the sympathetic nervous system, which triggers the fight-or-flight response. This causes your body to release stress hormones like adrenaline, which can increase sweating. Even if you're not physically active or overheated, the emotional stress can still send your sweat glands into overdrive.
Temperature regulation issues: Anxiety can affect your body's ability to regulate its internal temperature. The sudden surge of stress hormones can disrupt the normal balance, causing excessive sweating even in cool environments.
Increased heart rate and blood pressure: The body's stress response also includes an increase in heart rate and blood pressure, which can overstimulate sweat glands and lead to sweating episodes, even when you’re not physically exerting yourself.

The Chinese Medicine perspective: Yin Deficiency or Qi Deficiency
In Chinese Medicine, excessive sweating is viewed through a different lens, focusing on the balance of Yin and Yang, Qi, and the body’s ability to maintain equilibrium. Here’s how Chinese Medicine might approach this issue:

Yin deficiency: When the body lacks Yin—the cooling, calming, nourishing aspect of our energy—it can lead to symptoms like excessive sweating, especially during the night (night sweats). Anxiety and emotional stress can deplete Yin, causing the body to overheat and sweat more than usual.
Qi deficiency: Chinese Medicine also associates excessive sweating with a Qi deficiency, especially in the Spleen and Lung systems. When the body lacks the necessary Qi to support healthy bodily functions, it can lead to issues with temperature regulation, causing sweating even when it’s not hot.
Excess heat: Anxiety and emotional stress can generate Heat in the body, which causes it to overheat and sweat excessively. The Heat generated can be felt as an internal, uncomfortable sensation that leads to increased sweating.

How Acupuncture Helps with Excessive Sweating
Acupuncture can be highly effective for managing excessive sweating caused by anxiety. Here’s how acupuncture helps:

✅ Regulates the nervous system: Acupuncture helps calm the sympathetic nervous system and brings balance to the body’s stress response. By reducing the fight-or-flight reaction, acupuncture can alleviate the excessive sweating that often accompanies anxiety.

✅ Nourishes Yin and balances Heat: Acupuncture can help replenish Yin and reduce internal Heat. By stimulating points that support the Kidneys and Lungs, acupuncture helps restore your body’s cooling mechanisms, preventing excessive sweating caused by Yin deficiency or excess Heat.

✅ Boosts Qi: Acupuncture is also great at tonifying Qi to address Qi deficiency, especially in the Spleen and Lung systems. By strengthening these energy systems, acupuncture helps restore your body’s ability to regulate temperature and reduce the likelihood of excessive sweating.

✅ Regulates sweat glands: Acupuncture can help regulate the function of sweat glands, ensuring that your body sweats only when it needs to, such as during physical exertion or heat, rather than due to anxiety or emotional stress.

If anxiety is causing excessive sweating or making you feel uncomfortable in your own skin, acupuncture can provide a safe, natural way to restore balance and ease these symptoms. At The Village Healing Centre, we address anxiety-related symptoms and help you find relief from the physical and emotional discomfort that often accompanies them.

If you’re in the Northern Beaches of Sydney and you'd like to take action with your anxiety-related symptoms, we’d love to help you.

Anxiety and numbness or tingling: how acupuncture can help ----------- https://villagehealing.com.au/anxiety-and-numbnes...

Anxiety and numbness or tingling: how acupuncture can help ----------- https://villagehealing.com.au/anxiety-and-numbness-or-tingling-how-acupuncture-can-help/ ----------- Anxiety and numbness or tingling: Western and Chinese views and how acupuncture can help
If you’ve ever experienced numbness or tingling in your hands, feet, or face during a period of anxiety, you’re not alone. These sensations can feel unsettling, but there’s a reason behind them. In this article, we’ll explore why anxiety causes numbness or tingling, how this shows up in the body, and how acupuncture can help restore balance and ease these uncomfortable symptoms.

The Western medical perspective: Anxiety and Numbness/Tingling
Numbness or tingling, also known as paresthesia, is often linked to anxiety, especially during moments of intense stress. Here’s why:

Hyperventilation: When we feel anxious, we tend to breathe more rapidly and shallowly, a response known as hyperventilation. This leads to a drop in carbon dioxide levels in the blood, which in turn can cause constriction of blood vessels and a reduction in oxygen flow to certain parts of the body. As a result, you may experience numbness or tingling, particularly in the extremities.
Sympathetic nervous system activation: Anxiety triggers the fight or flight response, which relates to the sympathetic nervous system. This response can cause various bodily changes, including changes in blood flow and muscle tension, which can lead to sensations of tingling or numbness.
Muscle tension: Chronic anxiety can lead to persistent muscle tension in areas like the neck, shoulders, or face. This tension can compress nerves, leading to tingling or a feeling of numbness, especially in the hands, feet, or face.

The Chinese Medicine perspective: Qi and Blood stagnation
In Chinese Medicine (TCM), numbness or tingling is often seen as a sign of Qi and Blood stagnation. When energy or blood flow is blocked or restricted in certain areas, it can lead to sensations of tingling or numbness. Here's how TCM views the condition:

Liver Qi stagnation: Anxiety is often linked to the Liver, particularly when Liver Qi becomes stagnant. This stagnation can affect the flow of Qi and Blood, especially to the extremities, causing numbness or tingling sensations.
Qi and Blood Deficiency: Another possibility a deficiency of Qi or Blood, which results in poor circulation and insufficient nourishment to the body's tissues. This can lead to feelings of numbness or tingling, particularly in the hands or feet.
Liver Wind: In more severe cases, Liver Wind may be considered a cause of numbness or tingling. This condition occurs when the Liver energy becomes excessive and leads to irregular movements of Qi and Blood, which may affect the nerves and cause abnormal sensations.

How acupuncture helps with anxiety-related numbness or tingling
Acupuncture is a highly effective treatment for relieving numbness and tingling caused by anxiety. Here’s how acupuncture can help restore balance and ease these sensations:

✅ Restores Qi and Blood flow: Acupuncture helps to regulate the flow of Qi and Blood, ensuring that energy and nourishment reach all parts of the body, including the extremities. By unblocking energy pathways, acupuncture promotes healthy circulation and alleviates sensations of numbness or tingling.

✅ Calms the nervous system: Acupuncture calms the nervous system, which helps to regulate the sympathetic nervous system and reduce the overactive fight-or-flight response that contributes to tingling sensations.

✅ Relieves muscle tension: By targeting specific acupuncture points, acupuncture helps release muscle tension, particularly in areas that may be compressing nerves (like the neck, shoulders, and face). This alleviates pressure on the nerves and reduces sensations of numbness.

✅ Balances Liver Qi: Acupuncture targets points that support the smooth flow of Liver Qi, helping to reduce stagnation and the symptoms associated with it, such as numbness or tingling.

Common acupuncture points for treating numbness or tingling include:

Liver 3 (Taichong): This point helps to move Liver Qi and resolve stagnation, promoting better circulation and energy flow.
Stomach 36 (Zusanli): Known for its ability to boost Qi and Blood, this point helps nourish the body and improve circulation to the extremities.
Pericardium 6 (Neiguan): This point helps calm the nervous system and regulate the flow of Qi, alleviating anxiety-related numbness.

If anxiety is causing you to experience numbness or tingling in your body, acupuncture can help restore balance, reduce nervous tension, and improve circulation. At The Village Healing Centre in Curl Curl, we have a special interest in addressing anxiety-related symptoms and helping you find lasting relief.

Anxiety and fatigue: how acupuncture can help ----------- https://villagehealing.com.au/anxiety-and-fatigue-how-acupunct...

Anxiety and fatigue: how acupuncture can help ----------- https://villagehealing.com.au/anxiety-and-fatigue-how-acupuncture-can-help/ ----------- Anxiety and fatigue: Western and Chinese perspectives and how acupuncture can help
If you’re constantly tired, even when you haven’t been physically active, it can feel frustrating—especially when your mind is racing with anxiety. Anxiety and exhaustion often go hand in hand, and this type of fatigue is common. Let's explore why it happens and how acupuncture can help restore your energy.

The Western medical perspective: Link between anxiety and fatigue
Anxiety can drain your energy in several ways, even if you’re not physically exerting yourself. Here’s why:

Chronic stress: Constant anxiety puts your body in a perpetual "fight or flight" state, which uses up your energy reserves. This ongoing strain depletes your adrenal glands, which are responsible for managing stress hormones like cortisol.
Poor sleep quality: Anxiety can interfere with your ability to sleep deeply and restfully, leaving you feeling exhausted the next day.
Mental exhaustion: Anxiety often leads to overthinking, worrying about the future, or ruminating on the past, which mentally drains you.
Hyperactivity of the nervous system: Anxiety activates your sympathetic nervous system (the fight or flight response), which can leave you feeling constantly "on edge" and fatigued, even if you're not physically doing much.

The Chinese Medicine perspective: Qi Deficiency and Spleen/Kidney weakness
From a Chinese Medicine perspective, fatigue related to anxiety may be due to a Qi deficiency (lack of energy) and weakness in the Spleen and Kidneys:

Qi deficiency: Chronic anxiety can deplete Qi, your body’s vital energy. This depletion can leave you feeling tired, weak, and sluggish, even without physical exertion.
Spleen Qi deficiency: The Spleen is responsible for transforming food into energy, and anxiety-related worry can weaken the Spleen. This often results in feelings of fatigue, especially after eating.
Kidney deficiency: The Kidneys store the body's Jing, or essence, which is related to long-term reserves. Anxiety and stress can weaken the Kidneys, leading to chronic fatigue and low energy.

How acupuncture helps with anxiety-related fatigue
Acupuncture can help replenish your energy and restore balance, giving your body the boost it needs to combat the tiredness associated with anxiety. Here's how acupuncture can help:

✅ Restores Qi: Acupuncture helps to revitalize your Qi, increasing energy levels and improving overall vitality.
✅ Strengthens the Spleen and Kidneys: By targeting specific points, acupuncture supports the Spleen and Kidneys, addressing the root causes of fatigue.
✅ Regulates the nervous system: Acupuncture calms the nervous system, reducing the overactivity caused by anxiety and promoting a more balanced, rested state.
✅ Improves sleep: By calming the mind and relaxing the body, acupuncture improves sleep quality, allowing you to wake up feeling more refreshed and energized.

Common acupuncture points for addressing fatigue include:

Stomach 36 (Zusanli): Known for its ability to boost energy, this point strengthens the Spleen and overall Qi.
Ren 6 (Qihai): This point helps to replenish Qi and support the Kidneys, addressing chronic fatigue.
Kidney 3 (Taixi): Helps to nourish the Kidney energy, supporting long-term vitality and fighting exhaustion.

If anxiety is draining your energy and leaving you feeling tired all the time, acupuncture can help restore balance, calm your nervous system, and revitalize your energy. At Village Healing Centre in Curl Curl, we offer gentle, effective treatments to help you feel more energised and at peace.

If you’re in the Northern Beaches of Sydney and you’re curious about acupuncture for anxiety, we’d love to meet you. You don’t have to figure this out alone.

Pregnancy headaches and migraines: Can acupuncture help? ----------- https://villagehealing.com.au/pregnancy-headaches-and-migraines-can-acupuncture-help/ -----------

Pregnancy headaches can feel like an unexpected burden on top of all the other changes happening in your body. Whether it's a dull, constant ache or a sharp, throbbing migraine, these headaches can make you feel irritable, drained, and unable to focus. Many women in Curl Curl, Manly, and across the Northern Beaches report that headaches are one of the most frustrating parts of pregnancy—especially when you’re already juggling the emotional and physical tolls that come with growing a baby.

You might find yourself feeling like a pressure cooker, with tension building in your head and neck, only to have it escalate into a full-blown migraine. Or, maybe you’re dealing with constant, low-level tension in your temples or behind your eyes. You know that certain things trigger your headaches, but with pregnancy hormones swirling through your system, it can be difficult to pinpoint what might offer relief.

What Western medicine says
Western medicine views pregnancy headaches as a result of hormonal changes, dehydration, stress, and muscle tension.

The increase in estrogen and progesterone during pregnancy can affect blood vessels and the nervous system, triggering headaches. Additionally, blood pressure changes, poor posture, lack of sleep, and the growing weight of the baby can all contribute to tension headaches and migraines.

In terms of treatment, Western approaches often include:

Over-the-counter painkillers (with limitations for pregnant women).
Hydration and rest, particularly if dehydration is a factor.
Gentle stretching or massage for tension headaches caused by tight muscles in the neck and shoulders.
Prescription medications for more severe migraines, though these should always be considered carefully during pregnancy.

Though some of these treatments can help, they may not address the root causes of pregnancy-related headaches and migraines. That's where other approaches, such as Chinese medicine, can offer a different perspective.

What Chinese medicine says
Chinese medicine sees pregnancy headaches as a manifestation of issues such as Qi stagnation or Blood deficiency. The body’s energy flow (Qi) is disrupted during pregnancy, leading to blockages in certain areas that can cause headaches. Additionally, Chinese medicine often connects headaches to Liver Qi stagnation, which can be exacerbated by emotional stress, or Blood deficiency, which can make the body more susceptible to pain.

Chinese medicine also sees the Kidneys as playing a role in headaches. When the kidneys aren’t nourished, it can affect the flow of fluids and energy in the body, leading to migraines or tension headaches. Unlike Western treatments, Chinese medicine aims to treat the root cause by balancing energy, blood, and fluids, rather than simply masking the symptoms.

In this system, acupuncture and herbal remedies are commonly used to:

Move Qi and reduce stagnation in the liver and other organ systems.
Nourish blood and fluids to prevent headaches caused by deficiency.
Relax the nervous system and relieve stress-induced tension.

How we help
At The Village Healing Centre, we help many women across the Northern Beaches who are experiencing headaches and migraines during pregnancy, providing holistic relief.

Through acupuncture, we can:

Relieve tension in the neck, shoulders, and head, which is often a trigger for tension headaches.
Stimulate the body’s natural energy pathways to reduce Liver Qi stagnation and increase Blood circulation.
Calm the nervous system to ease stress-related headaches.

Our herbal remedies are designed to nourish the blood and fluids in the body, while also reducing inflammation and supporting the body’s natural healing processes. We also offer lifestyle recommendations to help reduce triggers, like dietary tips, hydration advice, and relaxation techniques.

Anxiety with headaches or migraines: how acupuncture can help ----------- https://villagehealing.com.au/anxiety-with-headaches-or-migraines-how-acupuncture-can-help/ ----------- Anxiety and headaches (tension or migraines): Western and Chinese perspectives and how acupuncture can help
If you’ve ever felt like your head is in a vice during moments of anxiety, you're not alone. Anxiety often leads to tension headaches or even more severe migraines, which can make everything feel a lot harder to manage. Let’s take a closer look at why this happens and how acupuncture can help.

The Western medical perspective: Anxiety and headaches
Anxiety triggers a cascade of physiological responses, many of which can contribute to headaches. Here's why it happens:

Muscle tension: Anxiety causes your muscles to tighten, especially around the neck, shoulders, and scalp, leading to tension headaches.
Increased stress hormones: The increased release of stress hormones, such as cortisol, can lead to inflammation and pain, particularly in the head.
Nervous system overactivation: Anxiety often leads to a hypersensitive nervous system, which can cause pain perception to be heightened, resulting in more intense headaches.

The Chinese Medicine perspective: Liver Qi Stagnation and Liver Yang Rising
From a Chinese Medicine standpoint, headaches caused by anxiety are often related to Liver Qi stagnation or Liver Yang rising:

Liver Qi stagnation: Anxiety can cause emotional strain, leading to a blockage of Liver Qi. This stagnation can lead to headaches, often worsened by stress.
Liver Yang rising: Chronic stress can lead to Liver Yang rising (warmth and/or movement that rises upwards), which creates an excess of heat in the head, causing severe tension headaches or migraines.
Blood deficiency: Long-term anxiety may lead to a deficiency of Liver Blood, which can cause headaches as well, particularly migraines with dizziness.

How acupuncture helps with anxiety-related headaches
Acupuncture is incredibly effective in addressing both the physical and emotional components of headaches. Here’s how it helps:

✅ Relieves muscle tension: Acupuncture targets specific points that release tension in the muscles, helping to alleviate the physical strain that contributes to headaches.
✅ Improves circulation: Acupuncture encourages better blood flow, which can reduce the inflammation and pressure that causes headaches.
✅ Calms stress responses: Acupuncture helps regulate the nervous system, reducing the stress and emotional turmoil that can lead to chronic headaches.

Acupuncture points commonly used to relieve headaches include:

Gallbladder 20 (Fengchi): Located at the base of the skull, this point is known for its ability to relieve tension headaches.
Large Intestine 4 (Hegu): This point is effective for relieving head pain, especially migraines, and also helps alleviate stress.
Liver 3 (Taichong): Known as the "Great Surge," this point helps to release Liver Qi stagnation and calm the mind.

If you’re struggling with anxiety-related headaches, acupuncture can offer relief by addressing both the physical and emotional sources of your pain. At Village Healing Centre in Curl Curl, we’re here to help you manage your anxiety and find lasting relief from headaches.

If you’re in the Northern Beaches of Sydney and you'd like to explore acupuncture for headaches or migraines, we’d love to help you. Let's get you feeling better.

Anxiety and heart palpitations: how acupuncture can help ----------- https://villagehealing.com.au/anxiety-and-heart-pal...
24/02/2025

Anxiety and heart palpitations: how acupuncture can help ----------- https://villagehealing.com.au/anxiety-and-heart-palpitations-how-acupuncture-can-help/ ----------- Anxiety and heart palpitations: Western and Chinese views, and how acupuncture can help
Heart palpitations can feel frightening, especially when you're anxious. Your heart may pound, flutter, or feel irregular even when you're resting. This is a common response to anxiety, but it can cause even more stress when it happens.

The Western medical perspective: Anxiety and heart palpitations
When you’re anxious, your sympathetic nervous system is activated, triggering a series of physiological responses designed to prepare you to face a threat. These changes can result in heart palpitations. Here's why it happens:

Adrenaline surge: Anxiety causes a release of adrenaline, the body's "fight-or-flight" hormone, which increases heart rate and makes your heart feel like it's pounding or fluttering.
Hyperventilation: When anxious, you may breathe rapidly and shallowly, which can cause a drop in carbon dioxide levels, leading to palpitations or a racing heart.
Elevated stress hormones: Chronic anxiety keeps your stress hormones elevated, which can overstimulate the heart and lead to irregular heartbeats.

The Chinese Medicine perspective: Heart Shen disturbance and Blood Deficiency
From a Chinese Medicine perspective, heart palpitations due to anxiety are often linked to imbalances in the Heart, particularly Heart Shen disturbance and Blood Deficiency:

Heart Shen disturbance: Anxiety can disturb the Heart Shen, which is the spirit or consciousness of the heart. This can manifest as palpitations, insomnia, memory problems or restlessness.
Blood Deficiency: Chronic anxiety depletes Heart Blood, making the Heart more vulnerable to disturbances that cause palpitations and irregular heartbeats.
Excess heat: Anxiety can also lead to an increase in Heart Heat, which agitates the Heart and causes palpitations.

How acupuncture helps with anxiety-related heart palpitations
Acupuncture helps to restore balance to the Heart and calm the nervous system, addressing the root causes of heart palpitations. Here's how acupuncture can help:

✅ Soothes the Shen: Acupuncture can calm the Heart Shen, promoting peace and reducing feelings of agitation that lead to palpitations.
✅ Regulates Heart Qi: Acupuncture helps to restore the smooth flow of Heart Qi, improving circulation and easing the strain on the heart.
✅ Eases emotional stress: By calming the nervous system, acupuncture reduces the underlying anxiety that triggers the palpitations in the first place.

Common acupuncture points for heart palpitations include:

Heart 7 (Shenmen): Known as the "Spirit Gate," this point helps calm the Shen and addresses emotional stress.
Pericardium 6 (Neiguan): This point is effective for regulating the heart, reducing palpitations, and alleviating anxiety.
Ren 17 (Shanzhong): Helps to open the chest, regulate the heart, and calm the mind.

If you're struggling with heart palpitations related to anxiety, acupuncture can help restore balance and calm your nervous system. At Village Healing Centre in Curl Curl, we can support your heart and mind through gentle, effective treatments.

If you’re in the Northern Beaches of Sydney and you’re curious about acupuncture for anxiety and heart palpitations, we’d love to help you.

Welcome to The Village Healing Centre

Welcome to The Village Healing Centre. We have been providing Chinese Medicine health services to the Northern Beaches community since 2008.

Previously known as Ocean Acupuncture, in 2019 we are getting deeper into our core values of: * community * belonging * support * education and * connection.

Our new name, “The Village Healing Centre”, represents the way that our care extends from each client in the consultation room, and ripples out through our community.

Healing is about being supported. Humans throughout history have come together in times of sickness and distress. From a mother’s hand on the forehead of her sick child, to the casseroles and child-minding and flowers that are offered when someone is going through a hard time... It is natural for us to support one another, and we believe that professional health care should reflect that natural warmth and support.
