Lows and highs, highs and lows. Life isn't meant to be lived in a straight line! ๐Ÿ“ˆ

I notice how folks beat themselves up for not always being 'up', for not being able to maintain the highs or always have good days.

We judge ourselves for having down days, for reacting and being impacted to the unhinged stuff happening on the planet and for not being able to just smile your way through it.

Knowing how to ride the waves of the highs and lows, to respond mindfully and compassionately is key to growth. I help clients befriend their feelings instead of fighting, ignoring or rejecting them.

It can be really hard to watch young people go through stuff - from new relationships, friendships dramas, motivation to succeed, having a sense of purpose.

Our inclination to go into advice mode and solution serving is very real, but often being able to actively listen and ask reflective, non judgemental questions can positively shape your relationship.

Got thoughts rolling around in your mind, percolating on unhelpful ideas, ruminating on past events, mulling over lost loves or mateship?

When we speak our thoughts aloud, we change their nature and composition. As the cognition transforms into spoken words you process it differently. So the act of talking, can on its own, be helpful.

But talking to someone trained to deeply listen, takes it to another level. As a psychologist I am trained to hold space for your thoughts and vulnerabilities, to listen and reflect, reframe and coach you through to new, more expansive ways of thinking.

There's a big gap between generational attitudes towards mental health and help seeking. While the stigma around 'awareness' of mental health conditions might have improved our proactive willingness to seek help is still often impaired (putting aside access and cost issues for a sec).

I often work with young people who have asked for a few months (or even years) for psychological support, and sometimes their folks really struggle to accept that their kiddo needs professional help. Sometimes it can be the parents own 'stuff' that prevents them from seeking support for their kiddo.

What I know for sure is that parents are doing their best with the resources and knowledge they have.

If you want to get support from an elder millennial who gets these generational gaps (and their impacts) - Talk to Jocelyn.

PSA: your word of the year on its own is as useful as your new years resolutions. To give them sustained meaning they need to be embedded into actions and consistent steps towards that core desired feeling.

My word for 2024 is anchor. It represents for me a deepening and grounding of my knowledge and experience, the tools I have and strategies I know (rather than seeking the next free download or break trough framework).

Did you create a word of the year? What does it represent to you? How will you keep it alive and use it to fuel your actions this year?

If you need some more conscious and less-sleepy solutions to managing stress (while still knowing when and how to rest) - talk to Jocelyn.

Modern life throws a lot of challenges our way - from global issues like the climate emergency and g3nocid3 in Gaza, to local issues within our workplaces, families and communities.

Often we focus on things outside of our control, and this leaves us feeling a range of negative affect emotions (there are no 'bad' emotions) like hopelessness, anger, frustration and guilt. When we shift our focus to small actions we can reasonably take, we can feel more in control and alleviated.
