May is Crohn’s and Ulcerative Colitis awareness month.

These two conditions (collectively known as Inflammatory Bowel Disease or IBD) affects approximately 180,000 people in Australia, and prevalence is on the rise.
Whilst there is no known cause, there are 200 genes associated with IBD and it’s thought that environmental triggers (poor gut health, excessive processed food, antibiotic misuse, viruses, chronic stress, smoking) prompt the genetically susceptible individuals’ immune system to “turn on” and launch an attack on their intestinal tract.
Individuals with IBD can be diagnosed at any age but are commonly diagnosed between 20-30 years old, with the median diagnostic age being 32 years old.
There may be times a person with IBD is recommended to follow a special diet, especially during a flare.

This is where dietitian’s come in!

It’s paramount to speak to a doctor and get a referral to a dietitian to help manage flares - dietitians are highly specialised to develop individualised dietary approaches and plans for patients 😊
