🏅 A Champion Among Us! 🏅

The OARCG team is thrilled to celebrate an incredible achievement by our inspiring osteoarthritis consumer, David , who just WON Gold at the World Aquathlon Age Championships (80–84 category) in Pontevedra! 🌍💪

This is more than just a personal victory — it's a win for Australia and a win for everyone living with osteoarthritis. 🙌

David kindly thanked our team for the support with strengthening exercises, shoe advice, and pain management techniques — all of which have helped him reach this amazing milestone. 🏊‍♂️🏃‍♂️

And he has a message for others living with osteoarthritis:

“The message is to keep going — a reasonable amount of running won’t make things worse (I’ve stopped doing anything over 10k for the past 2 years) — and it all goes well with swimming.”

An inspiring reminder that movement, when done right, can be empowering at any age. 👏👏👏

🎉 First Participant Randomised! 🎉
We’re thrilled to share that our very first participant has been successfully randomised into the CASCADE‑OA trial!

🧠 What’s the study about?
The CASCADE‑OA study, led by the University of Sydney, is evaluating a self‑guided 12‑week physical activity program for people with hip or knee osteoarthritis. Participants are randomly assigned to either:

Group A: The 12‑week program plus a Fitbit, or
Group B: A Fitbit with no additional program.

Our aim? To discover if this self‑managed intervention can boost physical activity, ease symptoms, and improve quality of life—and whether it can be delivered effectively at scale in Australia.

🏃‍♀️ One participant down, many more to go! Big thanks to our team, supporters & participant. Here’s to advancing osteoarthritis care — one step at a time. 🌟

🌿 NAIDOC Week 2025: Honoring Strength, Vision & Legacy 🌿

This year marks the 50th anniversary of NAIDOC Week, celebrating the enduring strength, resilience, and cultural richness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The 2025 theme, "The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy," emphasises the vital role of young leaders in shaping a future grounded in cultural pride and self-determination.

At the Osteoarthritis Research Group, we recognise the importance of inclusive research that respects and integrates Indigenous knowledge and perspectives to ensure that First Nations communities have access to culturally safe and relevant healthcare options, particularly in the realm of osteoarthritis research and treatment.

As we celebrate this milestone, we reflect on the strength of our Elders, the vision of our youth, and the legacy of our ancestors. Together, we strive for a future where Indigenous voices lead the way in health and healing.

Last week our team got together for lunch to farewell Mila Van de Pol 👋 Mila is a Biomedical Masters student from Leiden University Medical Centre in the Netherlands who has been visiting our Osteoarthritis Clinical Research Group for the last couple of months. While she has been with us, Mila has been focusing on the secondary analyses of some of our supplement trials. On top of her dedicated work, Mila always brought a smile and laughs to the office and was often found unintentionally matching outfits with the team 🤣 We wish Mila all the best and hope she comes back to visit us again soon! ✨

Yesterday, the Kolling Institute hosted the Musculoskeletal Research Showcase, highlighting ground breaking work from a range of musculoskeletal research teams. 👏 We were proud to see Dr. Alex Zhu present his research on the quantitative analysis of therapeutic exercise efficacy in managing symptoms, and to have A/Prof Michelle Hall open the event with a warm welcome. A fantastic afternoon of innovation, collaboration, and progress in musculoskeletal research! Well done to all involved💡🔬

Happy International Clinical Trials Day!!! 🦴🌍💪🧪

March 20th marks the day that the first documented controlled clinical trial by James Lind began back in 1747. Lind conducted the trial on board a British naval ship, testing different treatments for scurvy on sailors presenting with similar symptoms 🚢

International Clinical Trials Day is an important day to celebrate and reflect on the amazing research and invaluable clinical trials being conducted worldwide. We particularly want to recognise the clinical trials underway within our Osteoarthritis Clinical Research Group, as well as across the Kolling Institute and Northern Sydney Local Health District. We recognize the critical role of research in advancing medicine and thank the dedicated professionals and participants who make it possible. Your work changes lives ❤️🌍

OARSI RECAP!!! 📣 🤗 🌟

A number of members from our team were fortunate enough to attend the OARSI World Congress on Osteoarthritis in Incheon, South Korea from April 24th - 27th. It was a great opportunity to connect, learn, and contribute to the global OA research community 🔬

We were proud to see our colleagues involved in poster presentations, as well as the Early Career Investigator Workshop and the Joint Effort Initiative Discussion Group Meeting. A special highlight was Bimbi Gray receiving a recognition award for completing the OARSI Early Career Investigators journal peer reviewer training program. We were also excited to see Jocelyn Bowden share her insights as a panellist during the ECI networking session and Sarah Kobayashi and Jillian Eyles run a session for health-care professionals around best practice arthritis care.

It was a truly inspiring and collaborative experience and our team is already looking forward to next year! 🤩
