How you going mate?

How you going mate? A mental health initiative that focuses on how we support people to manage their mental health. We call this Active Support for Mental Health.

When you recognise that someone needs support then offer and give it without waiting to be asked for it. We started How You Going Mate? in June of 2017 when I lost a friend of mine, Steve, to su***de. How you going mate? is built around the idea that good social connection and support is crucial to managing our mental health but at the times when we need that support, we don’t ask for it. In fact when our mental health is poor or we are feeling overwhelmed and unable to manage, we hide, we disconnect, we socially isolate or we do everything we can to make it look like everything's alright. But we won’t ask for support. So we need people to see this and offer us support to manage our mental health without waiting for us to ask for it or expecting us to ask for it. Something we call Active support for Mental Health. Active Support for mental health is about recognising when someone needs support, seeing an opportunity to give real, substantial and practical support to that person and giving that support without encouraging them to ask for it, waiting for them to ask for it or expecting them to ask for it first. Active Support is taking action to support someone to manage their mental health.

In this episode I talk with my old friend Kara Thornhill. Kara is a passionate mental health advocate who recently started her own Mental Health support service called Maverick Supports. We chat about a whole range of things including living with her own mental health conditions, recently being diagnosed with ADHD and losing friends because of our mental health. We also talk about why she started Maverick Supports an just how she hopes to change the game when supporting good mental health.

Today is a sombre yet significant day on our calendar. On this day 8 years ago, I received a phone call telling me that one of my oldest friends had taken his life by su***de.
A few days after this, I started the How you going mate? initiative. We had one purpose, to encourage people to reconnect with people that they thought needed support.
The message is still the same. Don’t keep waiting for people to ask for help.
Don’t say things like “I’m here here if you need me” or “Call me if you need me.”
If you think somebody needs support, pick up the phone send a message or make a call and ask them How you going mate?
That phone call or message could be all it takes to save their life.

In this episode I have a great chat with Tracey Kelly. Tracey is a mother, animal lover, published author, certified journal therapy coach, and a qualified personal trainer who is passionate about family, food, fitness and wellbeing. Tracey talks to me about her own experiences managing her mental health after a serious episode a few years ago when a number of things overwhelmed her all at once and how that has inspired her books, Running Thoughts and When The Magic's Gone but also how it has inspired her to help others. You can follow her FB page here Tracey Kelly, Author !
