We are delighted to welcome Mags to the JBS personal training team!

Mags comes with a wealth of experience in training women build their strength, confidence and connection with their bodies. She works with women through every stage of life from pre and post natal to peri-menopause and beyond.

Mags will be a great complement to Janet's expertise in women's health physiotherapy.

Mags is excited to start up her Mums & Bubs sessions starting 28th October. She'll be running semi-private sessions (max 5 mums) from the JBS Physio Clinic’s Rehab Gym.

These sessions are for you if you want to:
👉🏻 Feel strong again, from the inside out
👉🏻 Learn how to safely return to exercise after birth
👉🏻 Stop leaking when you sneeze, cough or laugh
👉🏻 Improve your core and abdominal separation
👉🏻 Train in a supportive, social environment where both you and your baby are welcome

You’ll get individualised attention, pelvic floor and core safe programming, and the reassurance that you’re doing what’s right for your body at this stage.

Where’s Toddy?! 👀☕

Is he a physio? A barista? A local legend? (We’re going with all three!) 🙌

This week, Toddy was spotted behind the counter at one of our favourite local cafés, pouring his own coffee like he owns the place 😄
But here’s the fun part — this is just the beginning!

Over the next few months, Toddy will be making surprise visits to local businesses around Lane Cove, trying his hand at all sorts of jobs. Your mission? Guess where he is each time we post!

✅ The person who gets the most correct answers the fastest will WIN a special prize at the end of the series 🎁🏆

Think you know where he is today? Drop your guess in the comments below! 👇
Let’s have some fun and show some love to the amazing local businesses that make our community great ❤️

🔥 Early Knee Rehab: Quad Activation + E-Stim

One of the biggest hurdles after knee surgery is AMI (arthrogenic muscle inhibition)—basically, your brain + nervous system "shut down" the quad. Without re-activating it, progress stalls fast.

👉 Two go-to quad focuseed drills with E-Stim⚡️:

✅Iso bodyweight squats using a trap bar
✅Standing knee extensions with a powerband

These are simple, targeted, and effective for breaking through inhibition and building a strong recovery foundation.

💬 For those who’ve been through knee rehab: which quad exercise helped you “wake up” your leg again?

🎯 Runners—Train Your Soleus
The tricep surae (calf) is a large muscle group at the back of your lower leg.

It is made up of:
👀 Gastrocnemius = superficial, two heads, crosses knee & ankle
🔍 Soleus = deeper, crosses only the ankle

💥 During running, your gastrocnemius handles 2–3x your body weight, where your soleus handles 6-8x your body weight! 😳
Yet most runners don’t train it in isolation.
🚨 Weak soleus = ❌ poor shock absorption, ❌ reduced power & efficiency, ❌ higher injury risk

✅ To target the soleus: train in bent-knee positions

Try these exercises:
1️⃣ Bent-knee standing calf raises (double or single legged)
2️⃣ Wall sit calf raises

📌 Build soleus strength. Run stronger, safer, longer
💾 Save this for your next strength session
🏃‍♂️ Tag a runner who skips calf training

When your boss brings in pastries for the team... 🥐🍩😋 Delicious? Absolutely. Anti-inflammatory? ... not so much. 😅

We know sugar and processed goodies aren't exactly on the "anti-inflammatory foods" list (sorry croissant, we still love you 💔). But hey - life's about balance!

For every pastry we're balancing it out with some anti-inflammatory legends like:

🥑Avocado
🐟 Salmon & other oily fish
🥦Leafy greens & cruciferous veg
🍓Berries
🌰Nuts & olive oil

So yes, we'll keep enjoying the occasional pasty (team bonding counts as medicine too, right? ), but we'll also be reaching for the colourful, wholesome foods that keep our bodies moving pain-free.

A recent study* in rats found:
- Physical activity can influence cellular processes that contribute to overall wellbeing
- As you exercise various molecular responses are being triggered, such as the release of growth factors, increased mitochondrial function and improved muscle repair
- These microscopic processes help reduce inflammation support cardiovascular health, and enhance metabolic function
- Obviously these studies need to be repeated in humans however it seems likely that these findings would translate to humans as well
- Hence another reason that moderate exercise, if consistent, can bring about significant improvements in health!
