You can’t spend your lifetime hearing birth is terrifying, dangerous and excruciating… then expect to enter labour like a floating, confident birth goddess after a few tiktok scrolls and a positive affirmation 😂

The fear conditioning runs DEEP.
Movies. Horror stories. TikTok trauma dumps. Your aunty Pam telling you her birth story at every family BBQ.

And when you’re scared?
Your body tenses. You brace. You fight the contractions instead of working with them.

Confidence in birth usually doesn’t just magically appear on the day.
It comes from doing the work beforehand ✨

Learning how birth actually works.
Understanding your options.
Practising your breathing.
Unpacking the fear.
Building a support team that knows their s**t.

That’s where we come in 🤝
Big Birth Energy is the fun, honest, no-BS birth prep we WISH every woman got before labour.

Our birth classes are fun, honest and slightly unhinged 😂
Like… yes you’ll learn the science of labour and birth physiology, but you’ll also hear me chanting Floppy face = Floppy f***y.

Because birth prep doesn’t need to feel clinical and boring to be evidence-based ✨We want you walking into birth feeling confident, informed and emerging an absolute badass mother birther 🙌.

I’m obsessed with jiggerling 👏
One of my absolute favourite comfort measures as a midwife when a labouring woman is tired, tense, stuck in her head, or baby needs a little more room to rotate and move down.

Lights low. Quiet room. Pillow fort energy.
She’s resting comfortably on her side while gentle hands softly jiggle the muscles of the legs, bum and lower back back and forth. No forcing. No stretching. No “doing”. Just helping the body let go.

And honestly? It feels BLOODY AMAZING 😂

You can literally feel the muscles soften and the tension melt away. Less tension in the body = more space for baby and a cervix that can do its thing without the whole body bracing against it.

Pro tip from me:
✨ I usually pause during contractions unless she wants otherwise
✨ Stay on each side for 10+ mins if she’s loving it
✨ Start practicing from 34 weeks with your partner
✨ Pair it with breath work and birth meditations

The more your body recognises relaxation and softness before labour, the easier it can tap into that state when the real deal kicks off.

Your pelvis, lower back and nervous system will thank you 🙌

One of the first things I reach for when a labouring person is struggling with pressure and pain? Hip squeezes!

They might be the most underrated move in labour. And if you haven’t heard of them yet, let this be your sign to get practicing! 🤩

Pressing firmly into your hips during a contraction, creates counter-pressure on your lower back and tailbone area. That deep, relentless pressure you feel as baby moves down? This helps take the edge off it.

All you gotta do is stand behind mum, place the heels of both hands on the fleshiest part of her hips/bum, and push in and up firmly during the contraction. Firm is the key word — a light touch won’t cut it! Check in, adjust, and keep going. 🙌🏻

It costs nothing, needs no equipment, and I’ve seen it change everything for someone who was really struggling. Definitely one to add to your toolkit! 🖤

Physiological third stage = birthing your placenta without the routine oxytocin injection, allowing your body’s own oxytocin to do the work 🤍

Which means the vibe still matters. This is not the time for bright lights, loud chatter or hopping on FaceTime with the family group chat 😅 Stay in the birth zone. Skin to skin, privacy, warmth, calm.

BUT it’s also important to know your midwife is always watching your bleeding closely. If bleeding ramps up or things aren’t progressing safely, they may recommend the oxytocin injection to reduce the risk of postpartum haemorrhage.

There can also be a bit of time pressure in the hospital setting, so your midwife might encourage breastfeeding, changing positions, walking around or sitting on the toilet to help your placenta separate and birth before the 30 minute mark ⏰

in the wise words of Lil Jon… GET LOWWW 🔥

because if you want baby to come down, and your contractions to feel less ouchy, your body needs space + movement 👇🏼
we’re talking squatting, swaying, lunging, hips doing their thing 💃🏼

labour isn’t about being still and “well behaved”
it’s primal, it’s instinctive

low + loose = helping your cervix open and your baby descend 😮‍💨

so when those contractions hit…
don’t freeze
drop it low and wiggle with it, babe 🐆🔥

You thought your midwife would be by your side the whole time…

I wish 😅

Reality?
I’m constantly updating the flippin computer. answering phones. adjusting the CTG for the 73rd time 😡. running in and out of rooms like it’s a HIIT workout 🫠

It ducks, I know! So here’s what you need to do…
if I can’t be glued to you, you need someone who can 👀

A support person or 3 who actually knows what they’re doing.
Who can keep you grounded, protect your vibe, and remind you wtf is going on when things get spicy.

Because birth isn’t just “get the baby out” energy…
it’s hormones, safety, environment, flow.

And the people around you?
They matter more than you think.

Your midwife might be juggling a million things…
but your support team?
They’re your ride or dies 🔥

Shoutout to every support person who shows up and gives it a red hot go… Even if that maybe leaves us literally hanging midair from a tree? 🫠

Another reason we’re big fans of partners coming along to our classes! Learn all the skills BEFORE you need them. Vital! 🙌🏻

Stay tuned for part two where we’ll show you how to nail .birth.sling 🤍
