Low Carb, High-Fat Keto Diet a Bad Mix?

👉People lose weight quickly on low-carbohydrate diets, but many nutrition experts are concerned about possible side effects. 👨‍🔬Researchers from Washington University in St. Louis, in a study on genetically obese mice, found that high-fat, low-carbohydrate diets helped the animals remain lean, with normal blood sugar and low insulin levels - compared to mixed Western-style meals. However, the animals on the high-fat, low-carbohydrate diets eventually developed fatty liver disease and severe insulin resistance and showed signs of cell injury. 🐭Mice are not people, but consuming an extreme diet may have metabolic consequences.

Drinking Water With Meals Reduces Caloric Intake

👉Most people drink a beverage with their meals. Melis Daniels and Barry Popkin from the 👨‍🔬University of North Carolina reported that drinking water with a meal reduces overall caloric consumption, Consuming sugar-sweetened drinks increases energy intake by 7.8 percent and by as much as 19 percent in some people, Contrary to reports, diet drinks had no impact on energy intake. 🥛Milk and juice increased caloric intake by 15 percent. Drinking wate with a meal helps people eat less, and may have a significant impact in a weight control program.

Drug Cuts Blood Supply to Fat Cells

👉Napoleon Bonaparte said that an army marches on its stomach. If he had been a biochemist, he might have said that fat cells get fatter by increasing their blood supply. A University 👨‍🔬of Cincinnati study on mice found that chemicals called propoptotic peptides promoted weight loss and decreased food intake by decreasing 🩸blood vessel density in the fat cells.
Fat cells have a rich blood supply.
Blood vessel density increases as people gain body fat. Each additional pound of fat tissue requires a mile of new blood vessels. Cutting the fat cells' blood 🩸supply starved the fat cells and reversed the fat-promoting effects of a high-fat, high-calorie diet. Fat loss resulted from a decrease in food intake, rather than an increase in energy expenditure.
The animals experienced no side effects from the treatment. Regulating fat cell blood 🩸 supply with drugs might be an important way to prevent obesity.

MIGRAINE FIX REDUCES BODY FAT

👉Topiramate is used to treat migraine headaches. 🇩🇪German researchers discovered that it also reduced body fat and enhanced metabolic health. They gave 100 milligrams of the drug per day to six patients for 20 weeks, which reduced body mass index (proportion of weight to height) by 7 percent, body fat by 12 percent, waist circumference by 4 percent, leptin (controls appetite and metabolic rate) by 39 percent and insulin resistance by 37 percent.
It increased adiponectin (helps control blood 🩸 sugar and fat deposition) by 70 percent.
Topiramate decreased body fat and improved metabolic health.

Lifestyle Factors That Cause Weight Gain

👉Health experts give people all sorts of advice for losing weight. Most weight-loss studies last a maximum of only 6 to 12 months and can't tell us much about what works over 5, 10, or 15 years. A remarkable study from Harvard 👨‍🔬University examiner more than 120,000 people over 20 years and evaluated them at four-year intervals. What did the Harvard researchers find?
People gained more tha pounds during each four-year period. Factors linked to weight gain indi potato chips (1.7 pounds), french fries (1.3 pounds), high-sugar drink (1 pound), red meat (1 pound, and processed meats (0.9 pounds). Foods that triggered long-term weight loss included vegetables (-0.2 pounds), whole grains (-0.4 pounds), fruits (-0.5 pounds), nuts (-0.6 pounds), and yogurt (-0.8 pounds). Increasing physical activity caused an average four-year weight loss of 1.8 pounds, while watching television increased weight by 0.3 pounds per hour per day.
Based on this study, the best advice for long-term weight control is to jake a cue from bodybuilders: increase intake of yogurt, nuts, fruits, and whole grains, exercise more, and decrease consumption of potato chips, sweetened drinks, and red meat.

Arabica Coffee ☕️Could Help Weight Control

👉Free radicals are highly reactive chemicals produced naturally during metabolism that cause cell and DNA damage, depressed immunity, and muscle soreness in intensely training athletes. Antioxidants such as glutathione help buffer the effects of free radicals and protect the cells and their genetic material. A 🇩🇪German study found that strong Arabica coffee rich in two key antioxidants protected DNA and increased glutathione levels. 👨‍🔬Researchers concluded that consumption of three or four cups of strong Arabica coffee ☕️ per day reduced oxidative damage and increased metabolic rate, which could be helpful in weight control.

CALCIUM A LIGHTWEIGHT FAT FIGHTER

👉Several highly controversial studies have found that increased calcium intake is related to lower body fat levels. Not surprisingly, the dairy industry jumped on these findings to increase their sales. Several literature reviews concluded that calcium supplements do not help people lose weight. A 💂‍♀️British study from the 👨‍🔬University of Exeter, using a technique called meta-analysis, concluded that calcium supplements have a small effect on weight loss. Researchers combined the results of mi studies and concluded that people taking calcium supplements lose 2 pounds more over time than people not taking them. While calcium has a small effert on weight loss, it may not be of any practical significance.

Virus Linked to Obesity

👉Can a virus make you fat? Several studies have linked viral infections to coronary artery disease. Viral infections may also cause obesity.
Animals infected with adenovirus-36 had more body fat than animals not infected. This virus is similar to those that cause colds, 💩 diarrhea and pink eye. In humans, a University of California, San Diego study of children found a 90 percent obesity rate in children who had been previously infected with the virus. About 20-30 percent of obese people are infected with the virus, compared to only 5 percent of lean people.
If viruses really contribute to obesity, scientists may be able to make a vaccine to combat them.

OBESITY REDUCES GH
AND INCREASES HEART ATTACK RISK

👉Growth hormone increases fat breakdown and use in adults and children. Obesity decreases growth hormone (GH) levels, which makes it difficult to reduce body fat. A Harvard 👨‍🔬Medical School study showed that lower growth hormone levels were associated with reduced densities of LDL and HDL cholesterol, which increase the risk of 🫀heart disease.
LDL, sometimes called the "bad cholesterol," is particularly dangerous when it is less dense. HDL, also called the "good cholesterol," helps reduce total cholesterol levels and prevents heart disease. Obese people showed reduced growth hormone levels and lower densities of LDL and HDL, which promote heart disease. Size matters when it comes to 🩸blood fats.

Brain Protein Helps Control Bodyweight

👉A brain protein called RGS9-1 helps control body fat and is regulated by the RGS9-1 gene.
Some people have an RGS9-1 gene that produces less of this protein, which causes weight gain. Variations in this gene may help explain why weight control is easier in some people than others. Some drugs used to treat Parkinson's disease and schizophrenia increase RGS9-1 production, but have side effects such as involuntary body movements. This study may help people learn if they are genetically predisposed to obesity.

Calcium and Vitamin D Promote Abdominal Fat Loss

👉Abdominal fat turns over rapidly and is linked to an increased risk of heart disease, compared to fat that accumulates on the butt, thighs and arms. A Massachusetts General Hospita study showed that overweight and obese adults fed a reduced-calorie diet and orange juice fortified with calcium and vitamin D lost more abdominal fat (fat inside the abdominal cavity) than people following an identical diet without the supplements. The majority of 🇺🇸Americans don't meet the minimum dietary requirements for calcium and vitamin D, and incorporating adequate amounts of both into your nutrition plan could help you lose weight.

Blocking Myostatin Reduces Fat

👉Myostatin is a muscle growth-controlling hormone that is produced mainly in skeletal muscles. Blocking myostatin triggers a large increase in muscle mass, particularly in response to weight training. Myostatin also influences body fat. A study from Singapore using 🐁mice found that inhibiting myostatin with a drug decreased body fat. Blocking myostatin increased fat breakdown and use (fatty acid oxidation) and activated genes controlling the activity of brown fat.
Brown fat is a dieter's dream because it converts energy to heat instead of storing it as fat - a process called thermogenesis. Developing drugs that target myostatin could help treat obesity.
