🦷🦷 MRONJ – What You Should Know
Medication-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (MRONJ) is a serious condition of the jawbone that can develop following treatment with bone-strengthening medications — commonly prescribed for osteoporosis or cancer that has spread to the bones.
⚠️ Key Features of MRONJ
• Exposed bone in the mouth lasting more than 8 weeks
• Prior use of anti-osteoclastic agents (e.g. bisphosphonates, denosumab)
• No history of radiation therapy or cancer in the affected jaw region
🩺 Why is this important for dental procedures?
Dental extractions or implant placements can trigger MRONJ if a patient has a relevant medical history. This is why a thorough medical history is essential before planning any invasive dental or surgical procedures.
💉 Risk Factors
MRONJ risk increases with:
• Intravenous or subcutaneous administration of medications
• Long-term use or high dosage
• Cancer-related therapies
🛠️ Treatment Options
Treatment depends on severity and may range from:
• Conservative management (e.g. antibiotics, oral hygiene)
• To surgical debridement or jaw resection in advanced cases
👉 If you are undergoing or have undergone treatment for osteoporosis or cancer, always inform your dentist or surgeon.
