Beyond Distracted

Beyond Distracted A neuroaffirming community for people living with ADHD - and those supporting them. For more information: https://www.beyond-distracted.com/

As psychologists with ADHD, we’re passionate about bridging the gap between diagnosis and support. We often hear well-meaning advice from neurotypical voices about how neurodiverse people can live happy and successful lives. As psychologists with lived experience of neurodiversity we often wonder: would the advice be different if it came from neurodiverse people? In Beyond Distracted, psychologist

s Anthony Brown and Meagan Cooke interview neurodiverse people who have found success in their fields not by masking who they are, but by embracing their unique ways of thinking, working, and being. We explore how they navigate their life and work, manage ADHD and what advice they offer to others hoping to do the same. Our goal is to challenge the stigma that still surrounds neurodiversity and demonstrate that with the right understanding and support, neurodiverse people can lead interesting, meaningful, and fulfilling lives. For those newly diagnosed, their families, and the wider community, these stories offer hope, validation, and real-world insight from people who truly understand.

“Financial tips and strategies are great, but once you have an awareness of why you behave the way you do, you can start to make changes.”

Money is one of those things we’re expected to just figure out – but for a lot of people with ADHD, it’s not that simple.

In this episode of 𝐁𝐞𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝, Anthony and Meagan chat to 𝐓𝐢𝐧𝐚 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐦𝐬 – money educator and author of ADHD Money – about strategies that work with neurodiverse brains, not against them.

We talk impulsive spending, avoidance, and why awareness is more powerful than any budgeting tool.

If you’ve ever wondered why money feels harder for you, this one's worth a listen.

“Just because you can do it, doesn’t mean you should do it.”

For Ani Møller, one of the biggest shifts was realising that leadership isn’t about doing everything perfectly or pushing yourself to capacity.

It’s about the culture you create, the trust you build, and the relationships you invest in.

For neurodiverse people, leadership sometimes looks like setting boundaries, working within your capacity, and giving yourself permission to rest.

For executive leader 𝐀𝐧𝐢 𝐌ø𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐫, being diagnosed as an AuDHD felt incredibly isolating and confusing, thanks to the lack of information for those already established in their careers.

It’s also what led Ani to do the coaching work they do today – helping other professionals understand their strengths, manage their energy, and create ways of working that fit their brains.

It’s hard when your brain works differently to the people around you in a corporate setting.

For 𝐀𝐧𝐢 𝐌ø𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐫, that was a big part of their experience as an executive leader with undiagnosed AuDHD – and why it took time to understand what they actually needed to work well.

“I’m grateful to have a life that suits my brain, rather than trying to fit my brain into the life I think I should have.”

High-performing corporate environments aren’t often built for neurodivergent brains – and for a lot of people, that shows up as stress, fatigue and burnout.

In this episode of Beyond Distracted, 𝐀𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐧𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐞𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐧 chat to 𝐀𝐧𝐢 𝐌ø𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐫 – a former executive leader turned ADHD and leadership coach – who was diagnosed as autistic and ADHD late in their career.

Now working with neurodivergent professionals and executives, Ani helps people move from overwhelm to action and build more sustainable ways of working.

We talk about energy and capacity, masking in leadership roles, the cost of overcompensating, and the practical systems that make work feel more manageable.

It’s a truly fascinating conversation with plenty of takeaways you can apply in your own career.

There can be a real sadness in not knowing how your brain works for so long.

Especially when, on the outside – and on stage – everything looks like it’s going well.

𝐍𝐚𝐭 𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐬𝐜𝐡 shares how masking is an essential part of working in the music industry – and why it can make it so hard to ask for support when people have only ever seen the version of you that’s coping.

Musician 𝐍𝐚𝐭 𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐬𝐜𝐡 describes her AuDHD diagnosis as one of the most positive experiences of her life.

Because before that, she was trying to solve problems without the right tools.

Years of being treated for depression and anxiety hadn’t improved things – but once she understood her neurodivergence, her quality of life changed dramatically.

That’s why she believes a diagnosis is something worth celebrating.

From hours of deep focus and repetition, to creative intensity, to constant networking and self-promotion – the way musicians work can closely mirror ADHD and autistic traits.

For 𝐍𝐚𝐭 𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐬𝐜𝐡, that’s part of why her AuDHD went unrecognised for so long.

Because the way her brain worked didn’t stand out – it fit right in.

In an industry that rewards hyperfocus, passion and creativity, it can be hard to recognise when your brain works differently.

Pianist and composer 𝐍𝐚𝐭 𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐬𝐜𝐡 has built a career spanning classical, jazz and ambient music – performing internationally, releasing multiple albums, and working across both artistic and commercial projects.

Following a late AuDHD diagnosis, she began to better understand how her brain works – and what she actually needs to sustain that kind of creative life.

In the latest episode of 𝐁𝐞𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝, Nat shares what it’s like to work in an industry that often rewards neurodivergent traits, but doesn’t always support them.

We talk about masking in creative environments, the realities of running a small business without formal training, and the practical ways she manages her energy, health and workload.

𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐁𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐝 had always appeared to be organised, proactive and high-functioning – but that wasn’t how she felt on the inside.

After a lifetime of masking, the fluctuating hormones around perimenopause led to her diagnosis at the age of 47, and the start of a whole new chapter.
