Your pelvic floor goals for 2026 shouldn’t be simply to “do more squeezing”.

A healthy pelvic floor isn’t just strong — it’s dynamic.

It also needs to be able to:
• fully relax
• lengthen and move
• coordinate with your breath
• respond to load and impact

Constant tightening can be just as problematic as weakness.

So if your new year goal is to sort out your pelvic floor, start with understanding it first.

That’s where real progress begins.

If you’ve ever met me, or any other women’s health physio, you will know that we love to know all about your bowels and toilet habits!

Good bowel habits aren’t just about comfort — they’re a key part of pelvic floor health.

A good place to start with bowels is thinking about how to sit on the toilet the right way:
✨ Feet supported (think small stool or footrest)
✨ Knees slightly higher than hips
✨ Lean forward, elbows on knees
✨ Relax your tummy and don’t strain!

Taking your time and avoiding pushing helps protect your pelvic floor and prevent issues like prolapse or haemorrhoids.

Your bowel function says a lot about your pelvic health 🧻

✨ Symptoms of Pelvic Floor Dysfunction ✨

Your pelvic floor quietly works hard every day — supporting your bladder, bowel, and reproductive organs, helping with posture, and playing a big role in core strength.
When things aren’t working quite right, you may notice:

🔹 Pelvic pain or heaviness
🔹 Leaking with coughing, sneezing, or exercise (incontinence)
🔹 Constipation or difficulty emptying
🔹 Bladder urgency (that “gotta go NOW” feeling)
🔹 Ongoing lower back or hip pain

💡These symptoms are super common, but they are NOT normal. If you recognise any of these signs, a pelvic floor assessment may help you get answers, relief, and a plan to find your “new normal”.

Your pelvic floor does a lot of behind the scenes work for you — from bladder and bowel control to supporting your pelvic organs and s*xual function.

If you notice any of these symptoms, it could be a sign your pelvic floor needs some love 💕 (and no, busy lady, it’s not something you should, or have to “put up with”).

Here are 5 common signs of pelvic floor dysfunction:
1. Incontinence 💧Leaking when you laugh, cough, sneeze or exercise. Common, but not normal.
2. Urgency ⏱ That sudden “gotta go NOW” feeling, sometimes with little warning.
3. Constipation 💩 Difficulty emptying your bowels, straining or feeling like you can’t fully go.
4. Painful s*x 🔥 Discomfort or pain with intimacy, tampon use or pelvic examinations.
5. Pelvic heaviness ⬇️ A dragging, pressure or “falling out” feeling in your va**na.

Let’s stop ignoring these SOS calls from our pelvic floor and start talking about the issues. An assessment is the first step to getting you back to feeling strong and confident.

Some mornings feel like a race against the clock — packing lunches, finding missing socks, working out who needs their library bag, and trying to get myself dressed and out the door for a day of patients 🙃. I decided today to use a bit of Mel Robbins x Jedi mind control to help me and my kids set ourselves up for a great day ahead.

Morning pep talk courtesy of my bathroom mirror (and Mel Robbins..):
💬 “Today is going to be a great day.”
💬 “Something cool will happen to me today.”

I love the idea of us all starting the day with this reminder — a “cool thing” might be something we would normally not take note of - as simple as an impromptu chat with a good friend, or a cheeky bickie in your lunch box! ✨

Positivity and mindfulness don’t have to be fancy. It’s a scribble on a mirror, a deep breath in the car, or giving yourself credit for making it through a busy day. 💕

And if your “something cool” today is finally booking that check-in with your body (hello, pelvic floor, core strength, and all things women’s health 👋) — I’ve got you. 💗

What’s YOUR go-to way to start the day on a good note?

💪 Strong bones for life!
Did you know women can lose up to 10% of their bone mass in the first 5 years after menopause? 😲
This is thanks to the drop in oestrogen, a hormone that plays a key role in keeping your bones strong.

The good news? 🥳 There’s plenty you can do to protect your bone health:
✨ Weight-bearing exercise (think walking, dancing, resistance training)
✨ Adequate calcium + vitamin D
✨ Hormonal health support
✨ Postural awareness and pelvic stability work

Your bones are your body’s foundation—let’s keep them strong NOW and at every stage of life!

Leaking urine when you sneeze, cough, laugh or jump is common… but it’s not normal.
You shouldn’t have to live with pads in your gym bag or cross your legs every time you sneeze.

Pelvic floor issues are incredibly common during and after pregnancy, and as we age, but there are solutions (and they don’t all involve kegels!).

✨ Imagine feeling confident to move, jump, or laugh without leaking.
✨ Imagine not planning your workouts around your bladder.
✨ Imagine being able to sneeze without fear.

It’s possible — and it starts with a simple pelvic floor check.

💬 DM me if you’d like to chat about how I can help.
📅 Or book an appointment today — future you will thank you!

✨ Hi, I’m Amy! ✨
Founder of Breathe Women’s Health Physiotherapy – plus mum of three, coffee lover/addict, and wearer of many, many hats.

This week is Women’s Health Week and this year’s theme is all about “Say Yes to You,”. It feels like it’s the perfect time to properly introduce myself!

Like lots of mums, I feel like I’m always racing from one activity to the next, mind and body going at full pace. This week I’m working on practicing what I preach – stopping to Breathe between tasks, doing one thing for myself each day and trying to live in the moment as much as possible.

I started Breathe because I know how tough it is to put yourself first when life feels full. I’m passionate about helping women to feel confident, strong and in control of their own bodies—with care that’s personalised, practical, and meets you right where you are.

So here’s your gentle reminder to say yes to yourself this week, whether that’s booking that check-up, taking a walk, or simply enjoying your coffee while it’s still hot. ☕💛

Drop a 👋 in the comments and tell me how YOU’RE saying yes to yourself this week—I’d love to cheer you on!
