When prescribing a commode for someone with complex needs, posture and positioning are not secondary considerations.

They shape everything that follows.
🔹Pelvic stability influences trunk control.
🔹Tilt affects pressure distribution and postural support.
🔹Seat configuration determines access for hygiene.
🔹Frame selection impacts both transfers and carer safety.

Small decisions in positioning can have significant consequences for comfort, skin integrity, continence routines and long-term equipment success.

That’s why commode prescription for complex presentations requires structured clinical reasoning – not just product selection.

Want to explore this in more depth?

Join our Elevate Learning workshop – Commodes for Complex Clinical Presentations, where we break down the clinical reasoning behind posture, positioning and commode configuration for complex needs.

A new episode of Redefining What's Possible is live, and this one is well worth your time if you work in mobility or AT prescription.

Host Sarah Uncle sits down with Sally Kentell, OT and Assistive Technology Professional from ILS Light Rehab, to explore the brand new Royale Robooter range of portable powered wheelchairs and what they bring to the prescription table.

Sally covers the four models (E40, E80, E60-A, E60 Pro-A), the clinical features that make them stand out, who they suit, and who they don't. She shares practical assessment tips, real-world trial insights, and a genuinely moving story about what a small piece of AT can do for someone's quality of life.

As Sally says: "It can really just be the smallest things that make such a big difference to someone. A small piece of assistive technology can really change someone's life."

A powerchair trial should test more than basic driving.

From a clinical perspective, trials are an opportunity to assess function, safety and sustainability in real-world conditions.

Key areas to observe include:
→ Posture and comfort over time, not just initial sitting
→ Joystick positioning, grip choice and fatigue
→ Ability to start, stop and control speed intentionally
→ Visibility, spatial awareness and confidence navigating obstacles
→ Transfers, carer handling, and daily task access
→ Lifting, transport and storage requirements

A good trial answers one question: does this chair support safe, confident participation in everyday life?

Bathroom assistive technology shouldn’t be guesswork.

Yet it’s still common to see bathroom equipment prescribed without basic measurements.
👉No popliteal height
👉No IT width
👉No aperture alignment check

Without these, prescriptions risk creating new problems – including falls, pressure injuries, unsafe transfers and equipment that simply doesn’t work in the space.

Good bathroom assistive technology prescription requires more than product knowledge. It requires structured assessment, measurement and an understanding of how environment, function and carer support interact.

Our upcoming workshop focuses on exactly that.

👉 Bathroom Assistive Technology in Practice

A practical workshop designed for therapists who want greater clarity when translating assessment findings into the right bathroom solution.

You’ll explore:
🔸How functional assessments translate into bathroom tasks
🔸Measurement and fit considerations that affect safety and outcomes
🔸Aligning support level with transfer ability, trunk control and pressure risk

Not all powerchairs are designed for the same environments – and environment really matters when it comes to mobility.

When prescribing an off-the-shelf powerchair, clinicians need to look beyond size and weight to understand how the wheelchair will function across real-world settings.

Key environmental considerations include:
🔹 Tight indoor spaces and circulation paths
🔹 Turning space in kitchens and bedrooms
🔹 Outdoor pathways, slopes and uneven terrain
🔹 Flooring types that affect traction and vibration

These factors directly influence decisions around wheelbase size, drive wheel configuration, turning radius, tyre type and stability features.

For example, compact all-terrain designs like the Royale Robooter E60-A balance strong indoor manoeuvrability with greater outdoor confidence.

Good outcomes start with understanding where the wheelchair needs to work, not just how it moves.

Bathrooms are the highest-risk room in the home.

A person is 2.4 times more likely to be injured in a fall in the bathroom than in other rooms. Yet bathroom assistive technology is still often prescribed as a product decision rather than a clinical reasoning process.

Toilet transfers, shower entry, confined turning space and wet surfaces all place unique demands on balance, strength and coordination.

When assessments like 5x Sit-to-Stand, Near Tandem or the Alternate Step Test indicate reduced stability, those findings need to translate directly into bathroom-specific solutions.

Our upcoming workshop explores how to bridge that gap.

👉 Bathroom Assistive Technology in Practice

A hands-on clinical workshop designed to help therapists translate assessment findings into the right bathroom solution.

In this practical session we’ll explore:
✅ Falls risk and bathroom task analysis
✅ Selecting the right level of support – from toilet seat raisers to tilt-in-space commodes
✅ Environmental constraints that affect prescription success
✅ Protecting both client and carer safety during transfers and hygiene routines

Powered wheelchairs aren’t just about convenience – for many people, they’re a critical safety intervention.

As mobility changes, clinicians often see early warning signs that walking or manual mobility is becoming unsafe. These may include reduced endurance, slower reaction times, increased reliance on carers, unsafe self-propulsion, or near-falls during community mobility.

From a risk-aware, participation-focused perspective, powered mobility may reduce falls risk, upper limb overuse and fatigue, while supporting continued engagement in daily routines and community life.

Using a PEO lens, this decision isn’t based on diagnosis alone. It considers:
✅ The person’s physical capacity, cognition and fatigue
✅ The environments they need to move through
✅ The occupations they want or need to continue

Introducing powered mobility early can preserve independence rather than replace it. Often, the most proactive choice is the safest one.

Don’t miss our latest practical workshop designed to help OTs assess, script and trial wheelchairs with greater confidence.
