What are you putting down your drains? Guidelines for Proper Disposal into CWMS Drains

Council has recently identified elevated levels of pollutants entering the Community Wastewater Management System (CWMS) in Tailem Bend. To protect our environment and ensure the long-term efficiency of our wastewater infrastructure, we kindly remind all residents of the proper disposal practices for items going into the CWMS.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐁𝐞 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐖𝐌𝐒 𝐃𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧
✅ 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿: Tap water (rainwater or SA Water mains), clean water, or water used for general cleaning (free of chemicals or detergents).
✅ 𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗪𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲: Toilets are designed for human waste and toilet paper only. Remember the three ‘P’s - P*e, Poo & Paper
✅ 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘀: Small quantities of eco-labelled biodegradable soaps, shampoos, and cleaning products.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝙉𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝐁𝐞 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧
❌ 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗪𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲:Including food scraps, oils, fats, and grease.
❌ 𝗡𝗼𝗻-𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗜𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀: Such as cotton swabs, paper towels, sanitary products, baby wipes, and cleaning wipes.
❌ 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: Never flush expired or unused pharmaceuticals. Dispose of them at your local pharmacy.
❌ 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗪𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲: Any wastewater contaminated with grease, oils, solids, or chemicals.
❌ 𝗛𝗮𝘇𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗦𝘂𝗯𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀: Including petrol, flammable, or explosive materials in any form (solid, liquid, or gas).
❌ 𝗦𝘄𝗶𝗺𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗽𝗮 𝗕𝗮𝗰𝗸𝘄𝗮𝘀𝗵
❌ 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗺𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿: Including roof runoff, rainwater tank overflow, and surface drainage.

Improper disposal can cause severe blockages, system failures, and environmental damage. Contaminants not only jeopardise the health of our community but also result in costly repairs to CWMS infrastructure. By following these simple guidelines, you play a crucial role in maintaining a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable community 🙌
